Opis:: It is shown that the $ℤ_2$-index of a 2-distribution in an 8-dimensional spin vector bundle over an 8-complex is independent of the 2-distribution. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of 2-distributions in such vector bundles are given in terms of characteristic classes and a certain secondary cohomology operation. In some cases this operation is computed.

Tytuł:: On the characteristic classes of orbifolds
O klasach charakterystycznych Orbifoldów

Opis:: The purpose of this thesis is to give an overview of the generalization of characteristic classes so that they can be assigned to orbifold vector bundles and to give prooves of their basic properties. After giving a short introduction to orbifolds the main part of the thesis starts with the construction of Stiefel-Whitney classes of orbifold vector bundles using the classifying space of the representation groupoid of an orbifold. Two important results in this section are defining this classes through axioms and showing the relation between this classes and the question $whether a given orbifold is a boundary of another orbifold?$. After that I construct Chern classes, Pontryagin classes and Euler class of the orbifold vector bundle in the same way as Stiefel_Whitney classes or alternatively through Chern-Weil theory. Another important problem that I adress is the Thom isomorphism theorem which is presented both for singular cohomology of orbifolds and the de Rham cohomology of orbifolds.
Celem pracy jest przedstawienie uogólnienia pojęcia klas charakterystycznych tak aby można było je przypisać orbifoldowym wiązką wektorowym oraz dowodów własności tak uogólnionych klas charakterystycznych. Po krótkim przeglądzie podstawowych informacji o orbifoldach właściwa część pracy zaczyna się od skonstruowania klas Stiefela-Whitneya orbifoldowej wiązki wektorowej przy pomocy przestrzeni klasyfikującej grupoidu reprezentującego orbifold. Dwoma najważniejszymi rezultatami w tej sekcji jest sformułowanie aksjomatów które definiują te klasy oraz przedstawienie zwiąsku między tymi klasami i pytaniem "kiedy dany orbifold jest brzegiem innego orbifoldu?". W dalszej części konstruujemy klasy Cherna, Pontryagina oraz Eulera orbiwoldowej wiązki wektorowej w sposób analogiczny jak klasy Stiefela-Whitneya a także alternatywnie przy pomocy teorii Cherna-Weila. Jeszcze jednym ważnym zagadnieniem które przedstawiam w tej pracy jest izomorfizm Thoma który prezentuje zarówno w wersji dla kohomologii singularnych orbifoldu jak i kohomologii de Rhama orbifoldu.

Opis:: Let ξ be an oriented 8-dimensional spin vector bundle over an 8-complex. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for ξ to have 4 linearly independent sections or to be a sum of two 4-dimensional spin vector bundles, in terms of characteristic classes and higher order cohomology operations. On closed connected spin smooth 8-manifolds these operations can be computed.

The master thesis, is concerned with Euler class. In first chapters there are introduced foundations of cohomology theory, vector bundles, Thom and Stiefel-Whitney class. The main part of the paper deals with cohomological and K-theorerical constructions of Euler class, and there is shown their different behaviour.
