Opis:
Methane fermentation is one of the ways to obtain gaseous fuel from biomass. Agricultural and industrial products are used in this process. Various additives (biological and chemical substances) which can be used in the fermentation process may affect the quality of produced biogas. An analysis of the effect of inhibitors used in livestock production to improve the hygienic conditions of the environment where animals dwell was presented in the paper. These preparations have a significant influence on methane fermentation process and amount of obtained final product.

Opis:
Overcoming of technological barriers in methane fermentation of substrates including poultry manure derived from poultry-breeding industry is regarded as one of strategic trends in biogas-technology development. The essential limitations and possibilities of such substrates for biogas production is presented here. It should be emphasized, that biogas production based on poultry manure from industrial-scale farms is effective solution of important ecological problem with simultaneous production of green energy and efficient solution of odours emission from the poultry breeding farm. Methane co-fermentation of post-processed bedding premixed with poultry manure solves, at least partly, problem of correct C/N ratio in the substrate mixture.

Opis:
Ultrasonic disintegration is one of the most interesting technologies among all known and described technologies for sewage sludge pre-treatment before the process of methane fermentation. This study was aimed at determining the effects of an innovative ultrasonic string disintegrator used for sewage sludge pre-treatment on the effectiveness of methane fermentation process. In this experiment, we used a device for disintegration of organic substrates, including sewage sludge, with the use ultrasonic waves. Its technical solution is protected by a patent no. P. 391477 – Device for destruction of tissue and cell structures of organic substrate. The volume of biogas produced ranged from 0.194±0.089 dm3/g o.d.m. at loading of 5.0 g o.d.m./dm3 and power of 50 W to 0.315±0.087 dm3/g o.d.m. at loading of 4.0 g o.d.m./dm3 and ultrasounds power of 125 W. The study demonstrated a positive effect of sewage sludge sonication on the percentage content of methane in biogas. Sewage sludge exposure to 125 W ultrasounds increased methane content in biogas to 68.3±2.5 % at tank loading of 3.0 g o.d.m./dm3.

Opis:
One unconventional source of energy, which may be applied in numerous production and municipal processes, is energy accumulated in plants. As a result of photosyn-thesis, solar energy is transformed into chemical energy accumulated in a form of carbohydrates in the plant biomass, which becomes the material that is more and more sought by power distribution companies and individual users. Currently, a lot of re-search on obtaining biogas from energy crops is conducted. Corn silage is used most often, however, there is a demand for alternative plants. The experiment described in this article was conducted with the use of giant Miscanthus (Miscanthus Giganteus).

The basics of convection, mechanical, hydraulic and bubbling mixing used in methane fermentation technologies are discussed. The impact of the intensity of mechanical mixing on the quality and quantity of biogas as well as the course of the fermentation process was evaluated. The influence of the paddle agitator speed rate on quasi-continuous fermentation was investigated. Fermentation was carried out under mesophilic conditions with a hydraulic retention time of 21 days. A 10% increase in biogas production was observed with the increase of the speed of mixing from 60 to 70 min-1 without a significant change in the composition of biogas and other process parameters.

Opis:
One of the most commonly used substrates in biogas plants is maize silage, however, the application of monofermentation technology under Polish economic conditions has a tendency to rapidly bankrupt the investor. The lack of profitability of investments based on this material has encouraged investors to search for other, more economically favourable biomass sources i.e. maize straw. The aim of the research was to compare the energetic potential of untreated maize straw and extruded maize straw used for biogas production and furthermore, to determine the amount of electricity and heat generated as well as the amount of heat produced from direct combustion. The results obtained confirmed the substantial energy potential of maize straw. It has been proven that using the extrusion method as a pretreatment before the fermentation process, enables the producer to increase biogas and methane production respectively by 7.50 and 8.51%. However, the use of an extruder machine in biogas plants in Poland is economically unjustified due to its high energy consumption. Moreover, it has been shown, that the use of maize straw in the methane fermentation process enables it to generate (in Poland) a higher income than is the case of using this material in a direct combustion process.

Opis:
Highly effective methods of biological and chemical wastewater treatment applied in Poland resulted in an increased amount of generated sewage sludge, which pose serious problem related to its utilization. The purpose of this studies was to determine the impact of the thermal disintegration process (in low temperatures < 100°C) on the biodegradation of excess sludge, and then on the methane fermentation process. It was found that the method of thermal disintegration under the aforementioned conditions allows to achieve a very high degree of the excess sludge disintegration (> 70%) already at a temperature of 45°C. At the same time, the concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) increases more than 55 times, which can significantly shorten the fermentation process.

Opis:
A growing interest in Renewable Energy Sources initiated the use of biogas as an energy generating material. Biodegradable waste coming from different streams is an important resource for biogas production. The studies were conducted on 20–80 mm fraction of municipal waste separated by rotary screen in the technological process of The Waste Recovery and Storage Plant in Leśno Górne. Morphological composition of the examined waste and their parameters determining their usefulness for composting and fermentation were analysed. On the basis of organic carbon content, the amount of biogas that may be produced from 1 kg of waste was estimated. An approximate amount of biogas which can be obtained in the process of methane fermentation from energy piles, formed from 10 000 Mg of waste was also calculated. Depending on the temperature it was from. 2.8 to 3.8 mln m3.

Opis:
The present study determined the effect of preliminary hydrothermal depolymerization and enzymatic hydrolysis of Miscanthus giganteus biomass on the yield of methane fermentation in terms of the quantity and composition of biogas produced. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the substrate led to an increase in the volume of biogas produced from 0.12 dm3/g substrate in the samples without enzymes to 0.17 dm3/g substrate in variant I, as well as a significant increase in methane. In addition, there were noticeable decreases in dry matter content in all variants to which the enzymatic multicomplex had been added.
