Opis:
Investigation of polarizing properties of DNA is chosen as one of primary importance due to mirror asymmetry of the shape of DNA. Preliminary theoretical calculation has shown that the form of DNA is optimum for radiation of a circular electromagnetic wave under the resonance condition (~10 nm). This conclusion has been proved for the metal DNA-like helices in a microwave range in accordance with the principle of scaling. In the given work it is experimentally confirmed the presence of the effect of polarization selectivity in double reflection of microwave waves from DNA-like helical elements depending on their sign (the right-handed and left-handed helices). It is shown that the circular polarization of waves plays an important role in case of interaction of microwaves reflected from the artificial DNA-like structures. Probably, the identical effect takes place in some processes that involve DNA in biological organisms' cells, but in the range of far ultraviolet radiation and the "soft" X-ray range. These results are also interesting in connection with an opportunity of creation of artificial 2D and 3D structures on the basis of branches of a molecule of DNA. Such structures can be into a basis of new type metamaterials.

Opis:
Continuing our efforts in developing potent α 1 -adrenoceptor antagonists with uroselective profile, a series of derivatives of pyrrolidines was biologically evaluated in vitro for their affinity for α 1 - and α 2 -adrenoceptors. Result from binding assays allowed the identification of compounds with the highest affinity and selectivity for α 1 -adrenoceptors behaving as potent antagonists at those sites in cellular functional assays. Among tested derivatives, compound V [1-(3-(4-(3- chlorophenyl)piperazin-1-yl)propyl)pyrrolidin-2-one], displayed a 152-fold functional preference to α 1A -adrenoceptor versus α 1B subtype. Finally, the most promising compound V at the doses of 2, 5 and 10 mg/kg after i.v. administered, in contrast to tamsulosin (at a dose of 2 mg/kg, i.v.) did not significantly decrease systolic and diastolic blood pressure in normotensive anesthetized rats. This selected α 1A -adrenoceptor antagonist with stronger uroselective profile, requires further research.

Ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) are created based on enzyme phenomenon, where these polymers exhibit selective recognition of metal ions in the presence of matrix ions. For that reason IIPs find many applications in sensors, solid phase extraction and membrane separation of metal ions. This review focuses on the synthesis, characterization and application of IIPs.

Opis:
The selectivity of some pesticides and bioregulators to the predatory mite Typhlodromus pyri (Phytoseiidae) was evaluated under laboratory and field conditions. Most of the tested preparations were classified as selective for T. pyri. This group includes fungicides: Tercel 16 WG (dithianon + pyraclostrobin), Flint Plus 64 WG (captan + trifloxystrobin), Signum 33 WG (boscalid + pyraclostrobin), Switch 62.5 WG (cyprodinil + fludioxonil), Captan 80 WG (captan), Topsin 500 SC (thiophanate-methyl), insecticides: Coragen 200 SC (chlorantraniliprole), Movento 100 SC (spirotetramat), Teppeki 50 WG (flonicamid), Agricolle (concentrated polysaccharide suspension), acaricides: Envidor 240 SC (spirodiclofen), Zoom 110 SC (etoxazole), bioregulator Asahi SL (sodium salts of 5-nitroguaiacolate as well as ortho- and paranitrophenolates), Regalis 10 WG (prohexadione-calcium) and herbicide Roundup 360 SL (glyphosate). A slightly higher mortality rate of predatory mites was found after the application of fungicides Kaptan Plus 71,5 WP (captan + triadimenol) and Frupica 440 EC (mepanipyrim). Fungicides: Dithane NeoTec 75 WG (mancozeb), Faban 500 SC (dithianon + pyrimethanil), Polyram 70 WG (metiram), insecticide Calypso 480 SC (thiacloprid) were classified as partially selective for phytoseiids. The insecticides Decis Mega 50 EW (deltamethrin), Acaramic 018 EC (abamectin) and the herbicide Basta 150 SL (glufosinate-ammonium) were highly toxic to the predatory mite T. pyri.

Sulphidic tailings from Finnish Hitura nickel mine and Pyhäsalmi multi-metal mine were leached using sulphuric acid and bioleached. The aim was to recover minor amounts of valuable Cu, Ni, Zn and Mn. Both tailings consisted mainly of iron and magnesium-containing minerals and acid neutralizing minerals. The solution after chemical leaching tests contained mostly iron and magnesium, in Hitura up to 11 g/dm3 Fe and 38 g/dm3 Mg while in Pyhäsalmi 8–9 g/dm3 Fe and 4 g/dm3 Mg. Amount of these metals was 20–100-fold larger than amount of valuable metals, which were typically 100-300 mg/dm3. Problems in chemical leaching were high consumption of acid and poor selectivity. Bioleaching using iron and sulphur oxidizing bacteria was more selective towards the valuable metals. Both in leaching and bioleaching the high concentration of iron and magnesium in solution will make metals recovery challenging.

Selective separation of Na-feldspar (NaAl3SiO8) from K-feldspar (KAl3SiO8) by flotation appears to be the only alternative in commonly found mixed-type ore formations. For this purpose, various mechanisms in various studies have been proposed by which selective separation can be achieved in the presence of salt ions. These mechanisms under different flotation conditions are systematically discussed in this study. Literature review reveals that two adsorption mechanisms are operating in the presence of Na+ ions and natural pH: Ion exchange and ion adsorption. In mixed feldspar systems, the mineral surface properties change due to ion exchange of counter ions on K-feldspar surface and become suitable for amine adsorption, while Na-feldspar surface is suppressed due to co-ion adsorption leading to limited amine adsorption. Similar mechanisms occur in acidic conditions with fluorine ions which increases the dispersion of particles and provides selectivity for K-feldspar by forming AlSiF-amine complexes. K-feldspar at alkaline pH with NaOH is activated with fluorine ions at the previous flotation stages and then floated with amine releasing K ions into the solution. The ion exchange/ion adsorption mechanism seems effective in alkaline as well as in natural and acidic conditions.

In this work, we have designed and synthesized the fluorescent probe 1, which was capable to selectively detect fluoride anion (F). More importantly, the probe 1 possessed near-infrared excitation and emission wavelengths (excitation at 650 nm and emission at 695), and the probe solution had changed dramatically from yellow to cyan with the addition of F. In addition, the fluorescence intensity exhibited perfectly positive correlation with concentration of F concentration from 0 to 40 μM (R2 = 0.9972), which offered the important condition for quantitative analysis. The probe 1 owned detection limit of 46 nM. Therefore, this near-infrared probe can be of great benefit for detecting F in practical application.

Opis:
This work describes the preparation of functional polymers containing 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole and guanylthiourea ligands from chemically modified vinylbenzyl chloride/divinylbenzene copolymer (VBC/DVB). The resins were used for the removal of Ag(I) from synthetic and real chloride solutions. The 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole resin was highly selective towards Ag(I) in relation to Pb(II) from real chloride leaching solution. The resins were selective for Ag(I) from real chloride solution and they did not sorb chloride complexes of Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II). The sorption kinetic data were well fitted to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The degree of Ag(I) desorption was about 80% using 1% potassium cyanide solution in 0.5% hydrogen peroxide solution. Resins retain their capacity towards Ag(I) in five consecutive sorption/desorption cycles.
