Opis:: The aim of the study reported in this article was to identify the knowledge or skills deficits which make Polish students of foreign languages fail to understand specialised discourse written in their second language (L2). The author analysed the translations proposed by French philology students for a fragment of a French academic text, particularly the translation errors consisting in source text’s meaning transformation (i.e. misinterpretation, incorrect meaning, nonsense). The analysis allows to assume that these errors are the direct result of insufficient knowledge of the L2 in connection with wrong techniques of words’ meaning verification.

Opis:: The present article attempts to discuss whether a medical conference poster intended for a specific English-speaking discourse community shares the properties of discourse colony (Hoey 1986). The author analyses 12 e-posters, which were displayed during an international neurological conference, presenting findings on epilepsy treatment. First, the author characterises the conference poster, which is followed by a description of discourse community and discourse colony. Next, the analysis of the e-posters is carried out and the results of the analysis are presented. On the basis of these results it might be said that the medical conference poster could be considered a discourse colony as it shares some of its properties.

Opis:: The coronavirus pandemic has undoubtedly left an imprint on various spheres of human existence, not excluding communication, which is a certain refl ection of the reality around us. The aim of this study was to examine the nature of the broadly defi ned discourse concerned with coronavirus in Polishlanguage scientific publications from professional medical journals. The qualitative discourse analysis, which makes it possible to capture the complexity and context of the studied data, was applied to this end. The analysis was carried out using the SketchEngine® tool, which serves the purpose of identifying certain patterns in language. The outcome shows that the examined discourse is characterised by the presence of specialised stories, impersonal nature of the argument, and numerous metaphors, including the metaphor of war.

Opis:: The main focus of this paper is the degree of passivisation in English, French and Polish legal texts, considered as fully representative of specialised discourse, examined in selected original and translated texts. Since it is assumed that typological differences between languages determine users’ choices regarding their selection of passive structures, the very same tendencies should be also reflected in the specialised, legal variant of the language. The aim of this study is to verify this assumption by juxtaposing the research findings from two specialised corpora, namely a comparable corpus and a parallel corpus, both created by the author following corpus linguistics principles.

Opis:: Cet article se propose de porter un regard critique sur l’utilisation du mot migrant dans le discours spécialisé et médiatique. Depuis la crise migratoire de 2015, le mot migrant ne cesse d’être employé et recontextualisé dans divers types de discours. Son usage suscite des analyses suivant deux approches : une approche terminologique dans le cas du discours spécialisé, et une approche orientée vers l’analyse du discours (avec la notion de « formule ») dans le cas du discours médiatique. Ces points de vue croisés permettent de saisir les finesses de la notion de migrant telle qu’elle est employée dans le discours pour décrire la réalité contemporaine.
This article proposes to analyse the use of the word migrant in specialised and media discourse. Since the 2015 migration crisis, the word migrant has been used and recontextualised in various types of discourse. Its use gives rise to two analytical approaches : a terminological approach in the case of specialised discourse and a discourse analysis approach (with the notion of "formula") in the case of media discourse. These two points of view allow us to grasp the subtleties of the notion of migrant as it is used in discourse to describe contemporary reality.

On a certain method of analysing specialised vocabulary and syntax in a selected non-literary genre (the case of the "Villa Italia" catalogue)

Opis:: Praca przedstawia pewien sposób analizy słownictwa specjalistycznego i składni w wybranym gatunku użytkowym - katalogu, reklamującym przedmioty rzemiosła artystycznego firmy Villa Italia. Wyróżniono dwa etapy badania języka specjalistyczneg 1. pragmatyczno-genologiczny (niestrukturalny) i 2. składniowo-leksykalny (strukturalny). Punktem wyjścia rozważań stały się czynniki pragmatyczne (tj. kryteria specjalistycznego tematu, użytkowników, sytuacji komunikacyjnej) i genologiczne (charakteryzujące dany gatunek jako formę wypowiedzi językowej). Rozwinięcie badań i finalny punkt dojścia stanowiły znowu płaszczyzny: syntagmatyczna z aktualizacją struktur tekstowych oraz paradygmatyczna (słownikowa), grupująca terminy i kolokacje specjalistyczne. Proponowana przez nas koncepcja badawcza zakłada dyskursywne (zdarzeniowosytuacyjne) spojrzenie na język specjalistyczny i sposób jego opisu. Wszelkie wybory leksykalne i składniowe, podejmowane przez twórców katalogu, są uzależnione od projektowanego typu dyskursu, czyli zanurzenia wypowiedzi tekstowej w sytuację komunikacyjno-społeczno-kulturową
The paper presents a method of analysing specialised vocabulary and syntax in a selected non-literary genre - a catalogue advertising handicraft products off ered by the Villa Italia company. The analysis of specialised language was divided into two stages: 1. pragmaticgenealogical (non-structural) and 2. syntactic-lexical (structural). The starting point for the reflection were pragmatic factors (i.e. the criteria of a specialised topic, users, communicative situation) and genealogical factors (characterising a given genre as a form of linguistic expression). The analysis was further developed and brought to conclusion along two planes: the syntagmatic plane with an update of the text structures, and the paradigmatic (dictionary) plane which groups terms and specialised collocations. The research model proposed by us involves a discursive (event and situation-based) approach to specialised language and way of describing it. All lexical and syntactic choices made by the authors of the catalogue are determined by the projected discourse, i.e. immersing the text in a communicative, social and cultural situation.

Opis:: The paper, involving a codicological and textological analysis, attempts to identify specific features of the Polish administrative language in the entries of the registers of baptisms, marriages and burials from Piasek Wielki in the 19th century. Furthermore, the question of whether the written language recorded in the metrical books can be considered a specialised language is reflected upon. The aim of the article is to attempt to answer the question of whether the entries of parish registers are constructed according to a specific text pattern of baptisms, marriages and deaths, and thus whether they can be recognised as a text genre of such an entry, developed through a convention in force at a specific time in a specific area. Attention is also given to the structure and distinctive features of individual entries. An outline of the structure and function of the parish register and its annotations provides the background to the research field thus outlined.
Artykuł pomyślany jest jako próba analizy tekstologiczno-kodykologicznej metrykalnych ksiąg parafialnych z XIX wieku przechowywanych do niedawna w archiwum kancelarii parafialnej w Piasku Wielkim. Refleksji poddano zagadnienie, czy pisemnie utrwalony w księgach metrykalnych język można uznać za język specjalistyczny. Celem artykułu jest również próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy adnotacje w księgach parafialnych konstruowane są według określonego schematu tekstu zapisu w księdze chrztów, małżeństw i zgonów, a tym samym czy pozwalają się uznać jako gatunek tekstu takiego zapisu, wykształcony w drodze konwencji obowiązującej w określonym czasie na określonym obszarze. Zwrócono również uwagę na strukturę i charakterystyczne cechy poszczególnych wpisów. Zarys struktury i funkcji księgi parafialnej oraz jej adnotacji stanowi tło dla tak zarysowanego pola badawczego.
Der Artikel ist als Versuch einer text- und kodikologischen Analyse der metrischen Kirchenbücher des 19. Jahrhunderts konzipiert, die bis vor kurzem im Archiv des Pfarramtes in Piasek Wielki aufbewahrt wurden. Untersucht wird die Frage, ob die in den Kirchenbüchern schriftlich festgehaltene Sprache als Fachsprache betrachtet werden kann. Ziel des Artikels ist zudem der Versuch, die Frage zu beantworten, ob die Eintragungen in den Kirchenbüchern nach einem bestimmten Schema für Tauf-, Ehe- und Sterberegister aufgebaut sind und somit als Textgattung dieser Art von Eintragungen gelten können, die sich durch die im jeweiligen Zeitraum und Gebiet geltende Konvention entwickelt hat. Außerdem wird auf die Struktur und charakteristische Merkmale einzelner Einträge eingegangen. Der Überblick über die Struktur und Funktion des Kirchenbuches sowie seiner Eintragungen bildet den Hintergrund für das dargestellte Forschungsfeld.

Opis:: Polish Linguistic Society Journal is the flagship journal of the Polish Linguistic Society, one of the oldest and most renowned academic associations in Poland (founded 1925) known for its significant culture-forming role. The Polish Linguistic Society Journal (Pol. Biuletyn PTJ) is issued once a year and has appeared continuously since 1927, with the exception of short-term disruptions in the Polish Linguistic Society activity.
