Opis:: This paper discusses the situation of trilingualism of students at Lviv schools with Polish as the language of instruction. Earlier linguistic studies paid no attention to the individuals of non-Polish descent who attended such schools. Part one of this paper presents the profile of the examined group, which comprised, apart from persons of Polish descent, individuals of non-Polish descent, for whom Polish is a foreign language. The next part discusses the results of sociolinguistic surveys concerning the motivation for learning Polish and the level of command of the languages used by the respondents. It also presents preferences as regards the use of media and non-verbal communication. The final part describes the interviewees’ attitude to the languages as well as to Poland and Ukraine. The studies were conducted using earlier research concepts regarding Polish–foreign language bilingualism by Ewa Lipińska, Władysław Miodunka, Marzena Błasiak, and Pavel Levchuk. In the description of the private-sphere language choice, William Mackey’s method was applied.

Opis:: A contrastive analysis of feminitives in Bulgarian, Polish and RussianThe subject of this article is the contemporary usage of feminitives (specifically the names of occupations and functions), which traditionally are most often derived from masculine names. The article presents a contrastive analysis of feminitive usage in three Slavic languages: Bulgarian, Polish and Russian. The article examines the problem of linguistic asymmetry in the creation of feminine names in the three languages and presents the views of renowned linguists on the issue. Konfrontacja językowa feminatywów w języku bułgarskim, polskim i rosyjskimW niniejszym artykule przedmiotem badania stały się współczesne feminatywa (w szczególności nazwy zawodów i funkcji), najczęściej tradycyjnie tworzone od nazw męskich i ich konfrontacja w trzech językach słowiańskich: bułgarskim, polskim i rosyjskim. Autorzy omawiają w artykule problem asymetrii językowej w tworzeniu nazw żeńskich w trzech językach słowiańskich oraz przytaczają poglądy na ten problem wybitnych językoznawców.

Opis:: This article investigates kynonyms, which constitute one of the most prominent categories of zoonyms. The research material was obtained with the use of an 11-point survey and encompasses the West-Slavic languages: Polish, Czech and Slovak. The study aims to indicate the core tendencies in how dogs are named in these languages, as well as potential regularities or inconsistencies therein. The article encompasses a theoretical component, a discussion on terminology and an exploration of the research material (through semantic and formal means). Most kynonyms are created through the use of: names or surnames of fictional characters known from television and films; pragmatic names; and a characteristic of the animal itself. Only approximately 6.5% of the researchmaterial includes the names derived through word formation; the other names involve metaphorical references. The study also incorporates a stratification of the dog’s image; however, the only correlation uncovered was the relationship between the race of the dog (small or large) and the type of accommodation in which that dog stayed.

Opis:: At the beginning of the 20th century, a discussion on the status of the Silesian ethnolect emerged in Poland. Several years ago, the creative and language activist circles advocating for the linguistic autonomy of Silesian initiated actions aimed at the description and codification of the Silesian language. Among the many published works, only the few-page Wstępne zasady pisowni śląskiej (Preliminary Rules of Silesian Orthography) from 2009 and Gōrnoślōnski ślabikŏrz from 2010 can be considered valuable studies that had a real impact on the development of Silesian literature in the second decade of the 20th century. The relatively general normative decisions presented in these works are revised and extensively expanded in Zasady pisowni języka śląskiego (Rules of Silesian Language Orthography) from 2022. This monograph, which codifies not only Silesian orthography but also elements of grammar and vocabulary, can serve as a foundation for further activities towards the complete standardisation of the Silesian language.

Opis:: The Polish origin of the Yakut word for ‘snuff’ was suggested some years ago but a closer look at this word nest reveals new and rather unclear aspects. The other word to be discussed here is that for ‘thousand’; its Russian origin is doubted by this author because of phonetic inaccuracies which can be well removed once a Polish etymon of the Yakut word is accepted.
