Opis:: The paper outlines the method of political discourse analysis proposed by I. Fairclough & N. Fairclough (2012), who point to argumentative and deliberative nature of political discourse as practical reasoning that aims to decide a problem-solving action in a given situation. The novelty of this approach is explained through references to its established alternatives as focused on representation and power relations. The above mentioned method is applied to the British PM campaign candidacy speech by Andrea Leadsom to test how it works in the case of this type of political discourse which is different from the one originally examined. On this occasion, the meaning of the term ‘discourse’ is illustrated through the practical necessity of involving in the analyses the extra-linguistic and intertextual context.

Opis:: Artykuł przedstawia Metodę Dyskursu Eksperckiego wraz z opisem jej praktycznego zastosowania w środowisku naukowym Polskiej Szkoły Argumentacji. Metoda opracowana została z myślą o zorganizowaniu skutecznej współpracy między specjalistami tej samej dziedziny. Na kolejne etapy składają się: sondaż wśród ekspertów, mający wyłonić stanowiska, wybranie na jego podstawie najważniejszych oraz najbardziej kontrowersyjnych kwestii, przedyskutowanie ich w grupach i poddanie analizie za pomocą narzędzia OVA+. Artykuł zawiera sprawozdanie z pracy nad zagadnieniem siły argumentu, mającym szczególne znaczenie dla programu badań w Polskiej Szkole Argumentacji.
The article presents the Method of Expert Discourse, and a description of its practical application within the scientifi c community of the Polish School of Argumentation. The method was developed in order to effectively organize collaboration among specialists working in the same fi eld of investigation. The application of the method consists of the following stages: carrying out a survey addressed to experts, which is to reveal main positions; and, on this basis, selecting of some most important and controversial issues, and fi nally discussing them in groups and analyzing with help of OVA+, a tool for argument processing. The article contains a report on the research into the issue of argument force, which has a particular signifi cance for the research program of the Polish School of Argumentation.

Opis:: The aim of this study is to explore the discursive practices of foreign policy experts. While policy decisions involving war and peace keep people alarmed all over the globe, most of these decisions are shaped by policy experts who work on influencing public opinion through the media (Manheim, 2011). This study adopts a critical discursive stance and uses argumentation analysis to examine the ideological backdrop to the discourse of thirty opinion articles authored by American foreign policy experts in print media. Drawing on the Pragma-dialectical method of augmentation analysis (van Eemeren and Grootendorst, 2004), and more particularly on its notion of strategic maneuvering, the analysis examines the confrontational strategies used by this group of experts and attempts to determine the rhetorical goals pursued by these strategic maneuvers.

Opis:: A lawyer’s conversation with a client is discourse of special character including elements of a legal discourse. One of the parties in this discourse (client) speaks about facts and the other party (lawyer) provides information about law. The content, form as well as effectiveness of the legal argumentation which a lawyer presents in such a situation depends on a number of factors in terms of both the subject matter and the person concerned. This argumentation is characterised by lack of formalisation, however, it has certain limitations of legal, pragmatic and ethical nature. It precedes and to some extent prepares the argumentation which will be presented in the process of law application.

Opis:: This paper has a dual purpose: it both seeks to introduce the other works in this issue by illustrating how they are related to the field of argumentation as a whole, and to make clear the tremendous range of research currently being carried out by argumentation theorists which is concerned with the interaction and inter-reliance of language and argument. After a brief introduction to the development of the field of argumentation, as many as eight language-based approaches to the study of argument are identified, taking as their perspective: rhetoric, argument structure, argument as act, discourse analysis, corpus methods, emotive argument, and narrative argument. The conclusion makes it clear that these branches of study are all themselves interconnected and that it is the fusion of methodologies and theory from linguistics and the philosophical study of argument which lends this area of research its dynamism.

Opis:: L’objectif de cette contribution est d’analyser le fonctionnement argumentatif de la formule (au sens de Krieg-Planque 2003, 2009) dobra zmiana (‘bon changement’) dans l’espace public polonais. Après avoir dégagé le potentiel argumentatif du slogan de campagne qu’elle était à l’origine et à l’aide duquel le parti Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Droit et Justice) est arrivé au pouvoir en Pologne en 2015, nous analysons les stratégies argumentatives dans le discours des opposants au parti au pouvoir (politiques et journalistes anti-gouvernementaux). La formule dobra zmiana est mobilisée dans ce discours afin de disqualifier le parti gouvernant soit de manière déclarée soit de manière voilée, ce qui se fait grâce à trois démarches : reprise sans altérations formelles, reprise avec défigement et évitement.
The aim of this article is to analyse the argumentative functioning of the formula (in the sense of Krieg-Planque 2003, 2009) dobra zmiana (‘good change’) in the Polish public space. After identifying the argumentative potential of the campaign slogan, that it was in the origin and with which the political party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice) came to power in Poland in 2015, we analyse the argumentative strategies in the discourse of the opponents of the ruling party (politicians and anti-government journalists). The formula dobra zmiana is used in this discourse in order to disqualify the ruling party in a declared way or in a veiled way, which is done in three ways: adoption without formal alterations, adoption with défigement and avoidance.

Opis:: Assuming the existence of the authority taboo, which manifests itself as a form of a linguistic censorship that concerns the criticism of the ruling class of the country by its opponents, the article aims to analyze the role of delexicalization in the negatively polarised argumentation in discourse. This paper will attempt to analyse the breaking of the authority taboo’s linguistic manifestations in new media discourse which appeared with Web 2.0. The corpus on which this study is based consists of short humorous messages (mostly internet memes) containing delexicalized lexemes (lexies simples) and complexemes (lexies complexes).
En posant l’existence d’un tabou du pouvoir, qui se manifeste sous forme de censure linguistique touchant la critique de la classe dirigeante d’un pays de la part de ses opposants, cet article a pour objectif d’analyser le rôle du défigement linguistique dans l’argumentation polarisée négativement, c’est-à-dire visant la disqualification de la cible du discours. Il se veut une tentative d’analyse des manifestations linguistiques de la trangression du tabou du pouvoir dans le discours des nouveaux médias, né avec l’apparition du Web 2.0. Le corpus sur lequel est fondée cette étude est constitué de messages humoristiques brefs (majoritairement de mèmes numériques) contenant des lexies défigées simples et complexes.

Opis:: The article presents the analysis of persuasive texts produced in different codes. The way of analysis of this texts is the same, independently of used code. Verbal, visual and verbal-visual texts, if they got to influence recipients attitudes or behaviour, need to use discourse knowledge and ability of standardization of arguments. Discourse knowledge is necessary to interpret and understand message. It allows to evoke general background and particular situation, so to set out communicative situation, in which each persuasion is embed. It also gives an area, which general rules refer to. Standardization of arguments allows to define the persuasion aim.
W artykule przestawione zostały analizy przykładów tekstów perswazyjnych realizowanych w różnych kodach. Sposób analizy tych tekstów, niezależnie od zastosowanego kodu, jest taki sam. Zarówno w przypadku tekstów werbalnych, jak i wizualnych czy wizualno-werbalnych, jeśli mają wpływać na postawy lub zachowania odbiorców, konieczne są wykorzystanie wiedzy dyskursywnej i umiejętność standaryzacji argumentów, które trzeba wyodrębnić z tekstu. Wiedza dyskursywna niezbędna jest do interpretacji i zrozumienia komunikatu. Umożliwia ona przywołanie tła ogólnego i sytuacji konkretnej – czyli określenie sytuacji komunikacyjnej, w jakiej osadzona jest każda perswazja. Wskazuje także na obszar, do którego nawiązują reguły ogólne, stanowiące pierwszą przesłankę w argumentacji aksjologicznej. Natomiast standaryzacja argumentów pozwala na sprecyzowanie celu perswazyjnego.

Opis:: Celem artykułu jest ukazanie problematyki dyskursu politycznego w zakresie tzw. debaty nicejsko-konstytucyjnej, dominującej w ostatnich latach w polskich mediach. Część wprowadzająca tekstu poświęcona została zagadnieniom związanym z kształtowaniem społeczeństwa obywatelskiego w wymiarze komunikacyjnym. Omówione tu zostały dwa modele komunikowania, gdzie jeden z nich związany jest z debatą racjonalną, drugi zaś z tzw. „pseudokomunikacją”. Zasadnicza część tekstu ukazuje najważniejsze wnioski z analizy polskich przekazów prasowych poświęconych problematyce nicejsko-konstytucyjnej. Omówione zostały nie tylko najważniejsze słowa-klucze, nadające specyficzny charakter dyskusjom, lecz również główne nurty i wątki debaty, oraz stosowane w nich tzw. „linie argumentacyjne”. Na podstawie identyfikacji wskaźników debaty racjonalnej oraz „pseudokomunikacji” przedstawione zostały profile dyskursywne poszczególnych tytułów prasowych. Całości rozważań przyświeca pytanie, czy w zakresie wybranej problematyki nicejskio-konstytucyjnej można mówić o debacie racjonalnej, stanowiącej główną cechę demokracji deliberacyjnej, czy też raczej o „pseudokomunikacji”, wpisującej się w nieobywatelski model dyskursu?
The purpose of the paper is to show the problem of political discourse in the aspect of so-called “Nice and Constitutional Treaty debate” which has recently prevailed in Polish mass-media. The introductory part of the paper is devoted to the problem connected with the civil society creation in the aspect of communicative processes. There have been presented two models of communication – one of them refers to the rational debate, and the other deals with so-called “pseudo-communication”. The basic part of the text demonstrates the most important findings from the analysis of Polish press articles focused on “the Nice and Constitutional Treaty” problems. There have been presented not only the crucial “key-words”, which are characteristic for the debate, but also the main strands and threads of the debate, and also ways of argumentations applied. Using the most important indicators of the rational debate and “pseudo-communication” there have been shown the discursive profiles of each newspaper taken into consideration. The most important question of the paper concerns the problem if it is possible to understand the problematic of the “Nice and Constitutional Treaty debate” as a rational debate, which is an constitutive element of deliberative democracy, or rater as a “pseudo-communication”, which is characteristic for non-civil model of communication?

Opis:: The language situation in Belarus is atypical in many respects and difficult to grasp theoretically: for its analysis, it is particularly important to consider the internal perspective, i.e. attitudes towards the language. The aim of the study is to develop an interdisciplinary set of analytical instruments for the discursive determination and detailed description of (language) attitudes by integrating a socio-psychological attitude model and a discourse-linguistic topos-based multi-level analysis. This tool can be used to record the contradictory construct of the national language in collective thinking in Belarus and to gain knowledge on how to design language planning activities in the country. The identified discursive argumentation architecture can serve as a reference base when setting up argumentation typologies in relation to non-dominant national languages. The research model created is intended to allow each social discipline to engage in a differentiated examination of attitudes towards all discursively present socially relevant objects in a generalized manner.
