Opis:: Despite the ambiguity of the term discourse in German studies on discourse, a tendency is visible to specify the term for the purposes of particular research studies. These issues are addressed in the opening sections of the article. The article also discusses the relation between text and discourse, and reaches the conclusion stating that discourse linguistics is more than merely an extension of text linguistics, as both phenomena, i.e., text and discourse display a difference in quality. A question is also raised about the place of text in various trends of research on discourse. Particular schools/research groups show diversity in terms of theoretical conceptions, research methods, as well as in relation to the reception of Foucault’s ideas. Texts are in them undoubtedly an element of continuing discourse in the sense of corpus, in discourse analysis itself, however, researchers frequently focus only on selected linguistic aspects, rarely relying on text linguistics tools. The closing sections present a few suggestions within text-oriented discourse linguistics, which is understood here as a trend of the evolutionary character.

Opis:: The aim of the paper is to indicate the research potential and perspective of discourse as a historical and dynamic phenomenon. Methodology used in the paper concentrates on discourse linguistics, stylistics, and text linguistics, which is related to the conceptof language as a mode of communication manifested at its higher levels. What is important, the author is convinced that historical dimensions can be embedded into the definition of discourse. The first aspect constitutes the extension of the reflection at the discourse level in historical language studies. However, the inverse relation is most interesting. It is worth noting that the language history research could enrich the concept of discourse. Referring to previous research on the history of Polish scientific discourse and discourse of the excluded, the author formulates a thesis on the influence of the historical research on the concept of discourse, which could manifest itself in the following ways: (1) remodelling of the definition of discourse; (2) discourse dynamics; and (3) external discourse changes (cultural, sociological). The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The complementarity of language historyand discourse linguistics should be considered. (2) Discourse definition is an open category and, among others, depends on historical changes. (3) The dynamic nature of discourse could be the basis for adopting historical discourse studies as a subdisciplineof linguistics. (4) Historical aspects of discourse can encourage research on communication as a dynamic, multifaceted, and complex component of culture.

Opis:: This paper focuses on the question of conditions under which a written or a spoken phrase can be interpreted as ‘critical’. After all, the possibility to express something in different ways—contrasted with the expressions that have already been uttered - is one of the main features of language in use. Contrastive discourse linguistics as critical practice interrelates expressions from different languages. In this way, it shows alternative expressions and thoughts beyond their own discursive environment.
Punktem wyjścia podjętych w pracy rozważań jest odpowiedź na pytanie dotyczące warunków, które muszą zostać spełnione, by móc uznać realizację jakiegoś wyrażenia za ‘krytyczne’ na tle innych. Każdy odmienny sposób wyrażania (pojmowany tutaj jako ciągłe re-formułowanie i tym samym kontrastowanie z tym, co zostało już powiedziane, czyli proces nieodłącznie wpisany w codzienną komunikację) stanowi wszakże podstawową właściwość języka w użyciu. Skupiając się na relacjach wyrażeń pochodzących z różnych języków, kontrastywna lingwistyka dyskursu w ujęciu krytycznym, ukazuje na ich tle alternatywne możliwości wyrażania i sposoby myślenia.
Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage, welche Bedingungen erfüllt sein müssen, um die sprachliche Realisierung eines Ausdrucks im Kontrast zu anderen Ausdrücken als ,kritisch‘ bewerten zu können. Schließlich ist das Anders-Sagen als stetige Re-Formulierung und der damit einhergehende alltägliche gesellschaftliche Vorgang der Kontrastierung zu bereits Gesagtem eine grundlegende Eigenschaft von Sprache im Gebrauch. Kontrastive Diskurslinguistik als kritisches Verfahren verstanden setzt Ausdrücke unterschiedlicher Sprachen in Beziehung und zeigt dadurch alternativen Ausdrucks- und Denkweisen auf.

Opis:: The language situation in Belarus is atypical in many respects and difficult to grasp theoretically: for its analysis, it is particularly important to consider the internal perspective, i.e. attitudes towards the language. The aim of the study is to develop an interdisciplinary set of analytical instruments for the discursive determination and detailed description of (language) attitudes by integrating a socio-psychological attitude model and a discourse-linguistic topos-based multi-level analysis. This tool can be used to record the contradictory construct of the national language in collective thinking in Belarus and to gain knowledge on how to design language planning activities in the country. The identified discursive argumentation architecture can serve as a reference base when setting up argumentation typologies in relation to non-dominant national languages. The research model created is intended to allow each social discipline to engage in a differentiated examination of attitudes towards all discursively present socially relevant objects in a generalized manner.

Opis:: The combination of linguistics and cultural analysis leads back to Wilhelm von Humboldt’s concept of linguistic worldview. In it, a direct connection between thinking and speaking (in a particular ethnic or national language) is presupposed, thus implying the influence of languages on cultures. In contrast to this postulate of the unity of languages and cultures, discourse-sensitive linguistics shows the diversity of varieties within ethno- or national-language-demarcated cultures. Linguistics in cultural studies thus escapes the danger of hypostasis of languages and cultures and methodologically becomes an integrative linguistics in which systemic, pragma- and sociolinguistic methods can be incorporated. Discourse-sensitive cultural linguistics analyzes cultures according to thematic and, above all, institutional discourses (of politics, religion, law, economics, science, etc.) and examines language use down to the level of individual utterances and their linguistic microstructures within the framework of these discursive macro levels. Another type is perlocutionary discourses which almost exclusively aim at the effect of communicative actions: advertising, propaganda, scandalous discourses etc. Discourse types are shown by Russian examples, especially the Russian national hymn, the provocative performances of the group Pussy Riot as an example of scandalous discourses, and state patriotic education as an example of propaganda discourses.
Badania lingwistyczne, które stawiają sobie za cel analizę kulturową, odwołują się do koncepcji językowego obrazu świata Wilhelma von Humboldta. Koncepcja ta zakłada istnienie bezpośredniego związku między myśleniem a mówieniem (w danym języku etnicznym lub narodowym), co również implikuje wpływ języków na kultury. W przeciwieństwie do postulatu zakładającego jedność/homogeniczność języków i kultur lingwistyka zorientowana dyskursologicznie zwraca uwagę na fakt, że kultury i ich języki są zróżnicowane. W ten sposób lingwistyka kulturoznawcza chce uniknąć niebezpieczeństwa hipostazy języków i kultur, a jednocześnie staje się w ujęciu metodologicznym lingwistyką integrującą, która uwzględnia metody z zakresu analizy systemu języka, jak i z zakresu pragma- oraz socjolingwistyki. Lingwistyka kulturoznawcza zorientowano dyskursologicznie porządkuje kultury według dyskursów tematycznych, a także instytucjonalnych (dyskursy polityki, religii, prawa, ekonomii, nauki itp.) oraz bada użycie języka aż do poziomu wypowiedzi indywidualnych i ich językowych mikrostruktur przez pryzmat ich funkcji w dyskursie. Innym rodzajem są dyskursy perlokutacyjne, które niemal wyłącznie dążą do wywołania u odbiorcy określonego efektu: reklama, propaganda, dyskursy skandalu itp. Istotę wymienionych rodzajów dyskursu pokazano na przykładach pochodzących z rosyjskiego obszaru językowo-kulturowego, w szczególności na przykładzie hymnu narodowego Rosji, prowokacyjnych wystąpień grupy Pussy Riot, które uznajemy za przykład dyskursów skandalu, oraz państwowej edukacji patriotycznej uchodzącej za przykład dyskursów propagandowych.

It proves that the monolingual Polish language dictionaries are designed according to the ideology of gender and that gender stereotypes can take different forms in dictionaries. The dictionaries not only reflect, but also preserve social and cultural values and rules. The analysis leads to the question, how should the ideology of gender be presented in the future, in order to avoid stereotyping?

Opis:: This paper has a dual purpose: it both seeks to introduce the other works in this issue by illustrating how they are related to the field of argumentation as a whole, and to make clear the tremendous range of research currently being carried out by argumentation theorists which is concerned with the interaction and inter-reliance of language and argument. After a brief introduction to the development of the field of argumentation, as many as eight language-based approaches to the study of argument are identified, taking as their perspective: rhetoric, argument structure, argument as act, discourse analysis, corpus methods, emotive argument, and narrative argument. The conclusion makes it clear that these branches of study are all themselves interconnected and that it is the fusion of methodologies and theory from linguistics and the philosophical study of argument which lends this area of research its dynamism.

Opis:: The article presents a research project on linguistically profiled (quantitative and qualitative) analyses of the (sub)space of pandemic-related discourses, as well as the corpus of Polish texts concerning the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic that broke out in 2020, prepared for analytical purposes. The authors describe the following: 1. the reasons for the interest in this issue, the subject and purpose of the research and the research theoretical and methodological background -- discourse linguistics (mainly from the perspective of Jürgen Spizmüller and Ingo Warnke); 2. source material of the project (mainly individual/non-institutional Internet statements that constitute the basis for the shaping of specific systems of meaning, i.e. comments posted under posts on Facebook or Twitter and the dialogical relations among them); 3. problems related to the development of the pandemic discourses corpus (criteria for the selection of texts, methods of the corpus balancing, categories of metadata that shall be used for the material description); 4. conclusions drawn from an exemplary analytical procedure where a section of the corpus was used; 5. the potential of the above-mentioned research and possible applications of the research results.
