Opis:: As an autonomous constituent of culture explaining the functioning of the world in which all humans live, science has a long-standing history, and has developed solely with the so-called scientific method (or methods), also referred to as paradigms of science, through research activities leading to the publishing of the outcomes of scientific exploration. The development of science, as pursued through the expansion of its subject matter, and through modifying and revising its modes of learning, generated such an expansion in knowledge that it became necessary to divide it into specific areas, fields, and disciplines. By making a general reference to the history of science, including its division as proposed by A. Comte, this article will analyse the modern developments in this sphere, as introduced both by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In the context of the existing division of science into fi elds and disciplines, and in view of the place of security sciences within the fi eld of social sciences, the theoretical (ontological and epistemological) methodological assumptions of this science will be analysed, which will form the basis for shaping its identity, and determining its place within the existing system of sciences. Basic indications will also be presented regarding the subject matter of research, and its transdisciplinary conditions, methods, techniques, and research tools, positioned within transmethodology.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to raise and discuss, according to contemporary research findings, the most important reservations regarding the concept of sustainable (harmonious) tourism development as well as the barriers to the implementation of its principles in practice. The author points to ambiguities in the interpretation of the term ‘sustainability’ and, as a result, the methodological implications for tourism studies including the problem of measuring and evaluating ‘sustainability’ in tourism development processes. In addition it considers the social hostility towards limiting consumption in tourism and the growing climatic, economic and political instability at tourism destinations hindering its implementation of the concept of sustainability. In conclusion, the author proposes a new paradigm for sustainable tourism which does not directly relate to the imperative of harmonious interconnection between differing development goals and values in tourism.

Opis:: Despite great value of research into visual impairment (VI), there is a dearth of empirical studies in linguistics investigating the extent to which the sense of seeing impacts language development, processing and production. The lack of methodological rigour in previous studies as well as large diversity of the population, small incidence of visual impairment and little awareness of blind people’s needs make this field of study challenging for researchers. This article presents and discusses the most challenging aspects of performing experimental studies in the field of VI. The overarching aim of this paper is to guide good research practice which ensures robust and unbiased experimental design and at the same time respects individuality of people with VI.

Opis:: Social research, including educational studies, could be conducted in accordance with ontological and epistemological assumptions of quantitative vs. qualitative research orientations. When such a distinction is present, the same phenomena are analyzed and presented in a significantly different and often mutually excluding way. Is such an approach justified? It seems it is not. Based on the precedence of a research subject over the method, it could be said that a more comprehensive picture of the phenomena analyzed emerges when researchers make use of methods accepted in both quantitative and qualitative research orientations. The article presents theoretical assumptions and interesting practical solutions of a mixed approach (a mixed methodology) in social research. On the one hand, solutions and methods recommended for the quantitative research can be useful for studies conducted in accordance with the assumptions of qualitative orientation, and on the other hand, solutions and methods recommended for the qualitative research may be useful for the studies conducted in accordance with the assumptions of quantitative orientation. Both approaches have been illustrated by particular examples of research practices.

Opis:: Content presented in this article is focused on the reflection of the factors determining the choice of research strategy in the analysis of school environment. Some of the elements to be examined refer to the structural and functional model of a school, others to the interpretative model. As the assumptions about the nature of school reality are completely different within these models, depending on how the school is perceived, there are different ways of designing and conducting research. It is arguable whether derived from a structural and functional model of school (the school as an environment education, positivist paradigm) only quantitative analysis are justified, and after the adoption of the interactive model (the school as a system of socio-cultural, interpretative paradigm) only qualitative research should be conducted? The choice, at the first glance, quite obvious is a matter of more complex, because the strategy of research procedure also depends on some another factors: the order in which the study is carried out, the subject and the scope of the analysis, the experience of the researcher and to some extent, to the fact who are beneficients of the results. In the first part of this article author is trying to deal with these relationships, in the second part, there are presented a few examples of analysis when using qualitative methods or strategies. Most of them are realized within the model of so-called mixed research. They are only some examples presented and they should be understood as exemplifications, not in –depth exploration. Described problems might be explained and explored in the future using other methods and techniques, as well as combining them.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to look at the analyses of the body/corporeality carried out by Polish sociologists and at the currently pursued studies in the area. The article presents the dilemmas that the researcher of the body/corporeality faces, mainly due to the nature of the research object, but also resulting from associated methodological difficulties. Secondly, the paper also points at some important empirical omissions – that is, areas or methods of research that have not, so far, gained enough attention of the researchers. Thirdly, a list of recommendations for possible, potentially attractive new fields of exploration for the sociology of the body is presented.

Opis:: The starting point of this article is the relationship of art and science from the perspective of epistemological and ontological insights of philosophers of science and researchers of contemporary art. Further on, the author presents the specificity of the interaction of art and pedagogy, in which the complex subject of the latter opens the field to various sources, styles and languages of knowing and understanding of the world and the human being (including the language of the arts). Seeing art as an important exploration tool for the analysis of education in qualitative pedagogical research, the author summarizes the assumptions of visual ethnography – a research method that, as she explains, oscillates between art and science (with its methodological appeal to the image as the primary medium of the art). In the conclusion, she indicates cognitive and practical benefits which may result from using the concepts that derive from the arts as a source of knowledge about the educational reality.

Opis:: Process-tracing is a method of within-case analysis, which can provide causal explanations of various social phenomena. Its focus on developing and testing causal theories attracts interest among qualitative researchers who do not want to limit their inquiries to exploratory or descriptive aims. At the same time, the case-centric variant of process-tracing, in which theories are used pragmatically as heuristic devices, provides a systematic but also creative way of researching singular events and processes. This paper attempts to show what process-tracing is and what it is not, what its variants are and how they should be used. It also probes the ontological and epistemological limits of the method, by showing how it can be used in idealist and interpretive research.
