Opis:
The paper presents the results of research on the microstructure of martensitic X10CrMoVNb9-1 (P91) and X13CrMoCo- VNbNB9-2-1 (PB2) steel subject to long-term ageing at the temperature of 620°C and holding times up to 30 000 hours. The microstructural tests of the examined steel types were performed using a scanning microscope Joel JSM - 6610LV and a transmission electron microscope TITAN 80 - 300. The stability of the microstructure of the investigated steels was analyzed using a quantitative analysis of an image, including measurements of the following: the density of dislocations inside martensite/subgrain laths, the width of martensite laths, and the mean diameter of precipitates. It has been concluded that during long-term ageing, the microaddition of boron in PB2 steel significantly influenced the slowing of the process of degradation of the martensitic steel microstructure, as a result of slowing the process of coagulation of M23C6 carbides and Laves phase. It had a favorable effect on the stabilization of lath microstructure as a result of retardation of the processes of recovery and polygonization of the matrix.

Opis:
This study manufactured a SiC coating layer using the vacuum kinetic spray process and investigated its microstructure and wear properties. SiC powder feedstock with a angular shape and average particle size of 37.4 μm was used to manufacture an SiC coating layer at room temperature in two different process conditions (with different degrees of vacuum). The thickness of the manufactured coating layers were approximately 82.4 μm and 129.4 μm, forming a very thick coating layers. The SiC coating layers consisted of α-SiC and β-SiC phases, which are identical to the feedstock. Cross-sectional observation confirmed that the SiC coating layer formed a dense structure. In order to investigate the wear properties, ball crater tests were performed. The wear test results confirmed that the SiC coating layer with the best wear resistance achieved approximately 4.16 times greater wear resistance compared to the Zr alloy. This study observed the wear surface of the vacuum kinetic sprayed SiC coating layer and identified its wear mechanism. In addition, the potential applications of the SiC coating layer manufactured using the new process were also discussed.

Opis:
In this paper, aluminium alloy of grade ADC-12 was considered as a base metal and chromium carbide (Cr3C2) particles were reinforced through friction stir process. A detailed analysis of mechanical property and metallurgical characterization studies were performed to evaluate the surface composite. Remarkable changes were observed in the developed composite due to the mechanical force produced by the stir tool with an increase in hardness. The metallurgical investigation infers that the presence of silica in ADC-12 alloys has undergone mechanical fracture and long needle structure changed to reduced size. On the other hand, at higher tool rotational speed, the uniform distribution of hard particles was confirmed through SEM micrographs. Thus the modified surface composite has produced good mechanical property with high metallurgical qualities.

Opis:
The application of surface engineering techniques to improve the surface properties of carbon steels using high powered lasers for transformation hardening and surface melting is well established. Based on this previous research, a tungsten inert gas torch (TIG) technique has more recently been explored for the surface modification of steels, as a much cheaper option to lasers. In the present research, initial studies compared the preheat temperature recorded on a low alloy steel with Ar, He and N protective shielding gases over a single track length. The effect of overlapping 17 tracks on the temperature variation for three different gases was also explored. These studies lead to Ar being the chosen gas for the next stages of the work. During TIG processing, incorporation of fine TiC or SiC ceramic particulates into the liquid steel was investigated, with the aim of obtaining a uniformly high hardness in a crack and porous- free melt zone of sufficient length and depth to provide improved wear resistance over the parent steel. TiC particulates of 45-100µm size were preplaced on a low alloy steel, and following TIG processing, the hardness increased from the as-received steel value of ~200 Hv to~800 Hv, due to some dissolution and re-precipitation of TiC particulates. The incorporation of the more economic SiC particulates of ∼5μm or ∼75 μm size preplaced on a microalloyed steel was investigated. Single track surface zones were melted by a tungsten inert gas torch, and the effect of two energy inputs, 420 and 840 Jmm−1, compared. The results showed that the samples melted using 420 Jmm−1 were crack-free. Analytical microstructural and XRD studies established that both sizes of SiC particulates dissolved, and that some of the hardness increase recorded was due to formation of a high carbon martensite. A potential method of decreasing SiC particulate dissolution by generating a high Fe–Si liquid, thereby retaining the ceramic in the microalloyed steel after processing, was found to show promise.

Opis:
Gas turbine for a power plant has 72 pieces of cone burner in its combustion chamber. High-speed diesel oil (HSD) is use as fuel to produce 130 MW of power at 3,000 rpm. The maximum temperature at the turbine inlet is estimated about 1087 centigrade and at the outlet is between 400-540oC. Sixty percent of the cone burner failed repetitively at one side of the tip-end after 6,000 hours of service. The refurbished cone burner has to be replaced by a new one after 18,000 of service-hours. The cone burner material is cast Hastelloy-X (nickel based alloys). Metallurgical analyses by microstructural observation using optical and scanning electron microscopes, and energy dispersive spectroscope have been performed to observe the change in burner microstructure. Thermodynamics analysis has been performed to obtain temperature distribution around the failed section. Two failed cone burners have been examined; cone burner that has not been repaired, and that has been repaired twice. Thermodynamics analysis result shown that the temperature around the failed section is between 897 to 1087 centigrade. Microstructure of the good part, far from the failed section, consists of cast structure of austenite matrix and fine carbide particles. Severe carbide precipitation and growth was observed on the failed section even the nominal carbon content in material is only 0.10 percent (max.). Severe carbide precipitation occurred because of carbon ingress from the environment (carburization) which combines with carbide forming elements in material (chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten). As a result, the corrosion and oxidation resistance of material decreased significantly after long time exposure at high temperature that led to oxidation, thinning, and failure of the cone burner tip. Failure only localized on one side of the tip-edge, therefore refurbishment by welding and coating can be performed to extend the life cycle of cone burner. The current examination results shows that the replacement cycle is not only limited to 18,000 hours but can also be extended to 48,000 hours.

Opis:
Fe-C-V alloys with high vanadium content are included in the family of white cast irons, because all carbon present in this material is bound into vanadium carbides. The study presents the results of microstructural examinations of the volume solidifying Fe-C-V and Fe-C-V-Si alloys containing carbon in the range of 1.38÷4.14%, vanadium in the range of 6.77÷16.34% and silicon in the range of 0÷3.10%. Attention was focused on near-eutectic alloys. In Fe-C-V and Fe-C-V-Si alloys, depending on the chemical composition, can crystallize eutectic composed of ferrite and VC-type carbides highly differentiated morphology. In these alloys were observed following types of eutectic: fibrous eutectic, spiral, quasi-regular and globular. Moreover, both these alloys are crystallized in the form of non-faceted dendrites primary carbides and faceted dendrites primary carbides. The paper presents examples of the different microstructures. Also in order to examine the shape of the primary carbides and eutectics in a closer detail the specimens were deep-etched with aqua regia and then examined in the SEM.
Stopy Fe-C-V o wysokiej zawartości wanadu zaliczane są do grupy żeliwa białego, ponieważ cały węgiel związany jest w węgliki wanadu. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki szczegółowej analizy mikrostruktury stopów Fe-C-V oraz Fe-C-V-Si, o zawartości węgla w zakresie 1,38÷4,14%, wanadu w zakresie 6,77÷16,34% i krzemu w zakresie 0÷3,10%, krystalizujących w sposób objętościowy.

Opis:
A eutectic reaction is a basic liquid-solid transformation, which can be used in the fabrication of high-strength in situ composites. In this study an attempt was made to ensure directional solidification of Fe-C-V alloy with hypereutectic microstructure. In this alloy, the crystallisation of regular fibrous eutectic and primary carbides with the shape of non-faceted dendrites takes place. According to the data given in technical literature, this type of eutectic is suitable for the fabrication of in-situ composites, owing to the fact that a flat solidification front is formed accompanied by the presence of two phases, where one of the phases can crystallise in the form of elongated fibres. In the present study an attempt was also made to produce directionally solidifying vanadium eutectic using an apparatus with a very high temperature gradient amounting to 380 W/cm at a rate of 3 mm/h. Alloy microstructure was examined in both the initial state and after directional solidification. It was demonstrated that the resulting microstructure is of a non-homogeneous character, and the process of directional solidification leads to an oriented arrangement of both the eutectic fibres and primary carbides.

Opis:
The work presents the results of investigations into the structure and phase composition of newly developed high manganese steels of the X98MnAlSiNbTi24-11 and X105MnAlSi24-11 type. The average density of such steels is 6.67 g/cm3, which is 15% lower as compared to typical structural steels. An analysis of phase composition and structure allows to conclude that the investigated steels feature an austenitic γ-Fe(Mn,Al,C) structure with uniformly distributed and elongated α-Fe(Mn,Al) ferrite grains on the boundaries of austenite grains and carbides. Examinations by diffraction of back scattered electrons (EBSD) allow to conclude that high-angle boundaries dominate in such steels, having significant influence on mechanical properties. Three types of carbides with differentiated chemical composition and size were identified in steel X98MnAlSiNbTi24-11 with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. κ-(Fe,Mn)3AlC carbides, having a regular, face-centered cubic lattice (fcc), were identified in austenite. Transmission electron microscopy examinations have enabled to identify M7C3-type carbide in ferrite. Nb- and Ti-based complex carbides were identified in steel X98MnAlSiNbTi24-11, both, in ferrite and austenite. (NbTi)C2 carbide precipitates were confirmed in an X-ray qualitative phase analysis. The size of the above-mentioned carbides is within several to several dozens of μm. An X-ray qualitative phase analysis has confirmed the precipitates of M7C3 carbides in both steels.

Opis:
In this research, aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs) have been manufactured through friction stir processing (FSP) by reinforcing nano-sized SiC particles in an Al6061-T6 alloy. The consequences of the volume percentage of reinforced SiC particles on mechanical properties and microstructural features were analyzed for the developed AMMCs. Microstructural evaluation of a cross-section of a friction stir processed (FSPed) sample has been conducted through Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique. Microhardness tests were conducted athwart the cross section of FSPed specimen to obtain microhardness feature. A tensile test of FSPed samples has been conducted on a universal testing machine (UTM). Homogeneous distributions of SiC particles were found in the stir zone without any consolidation of particles. The size of the reinforcement particles was decreased slightly by increasing the volume fraction. It has been found that increasing the volume fraction of SiC particles, enhance the tensile strength and microhardness, but decreases the ductility of the aluminium. The maximum ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and microhardness were obtained as 390 MPa and 150.71 HV, respectively, at 12% volume percentage of reinforcement particles. UTS and microhardness of the FSPed Al/SiC have been improved by 38.29% and 59.48% respectively as compared to Al6061-T6. The brittle nature of the FSPed Al/SiC has increased due to a rise in the volume fraction of nanosized SiC particles, which causes a decrease in ductility.

Opis:
This article presents the results of investigations of the effect of heat treatment temperature on the content of the carbide phase of HS3-1-2 and HS6-5-2 low-alloy high-speed steel. Analysis of the phase composition of carbides is carried out using the diffraction method. It is determined that with increasing austenitising temperature, the intensification of dissolution of M6C carbide increases. As a result, an increase in the grain size of the austenite and the amount of retained austenite causes a significant reduction in the hardness of hardened steel HS3-1-2 to be observed. The results of diffraction investigations showed that M7C3 carbides containing mainly Cr and Fe carbides and M6C carbides containing mainly Mo and W carbides are dissolved during austenitisation. During austenitisation of HS3-1-2 steel, the silicon is transferred from the matrix to carbides, thus replacing carbide-forming elements. An increase in a degree of tempering leads to intensification of carbide separation and this process reduce the grindability of tested steels.
