Edward Jurgens and Karol Ruprecht : Poles by choice in face of Polish independence movements in the 19th century
Edward Jurgens i Karol Ruprecht : Polacy z wyboru wobec polskich ruchów niepodległościowych w XIX wieku
Autorzy:
Stegner, Tadeusz
Opis:
Edward Jurgens and Karol Ruprecht are descendants of German emigrants of the Evangelical denomination who came to Poland in the 18th and 19th centuries. Parts of the German population in the Kingdom of Poland, especially in Warsaw, were polonized quite quickly, sometimes already in the second generation. Edward Jurgens and Karol Ruprecht became such Poles by choice, as they were involved in Polish independence activities and were among the leaders of the Polish national movement, especially during the January Uprising. Edward Jurgens was one of the leading activists of the Whites faction, who was arrested and then died in 1863 in the infamous tenth pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel. K. Ruprecht was sentenced to death in 1846 for his conspiratorial activities, but then pardoned at the very last moment before execution, and in 1863 he was a member of the National Government. Their attitudes were a testimony to the changes in the attitude of the newcomers from Germany towards their new homeland.

The failure of the integration of Galician Jews according to Lvov’s "Ojczyzna" (1881-1892)
Autorzy:
Jasnowski, Paweł
Opis:
The article is devoted to the pro-Polish integrationist group, an important part of the modernizing section of the Jewish community in Poland, in the second half of the 19th century. The author focuses on Ojczyzna, a Polish-language bulletin and the first regular Polish-language newspaper of the pro-Polish integrationist group in Galicia. The study is an attempt to show how the idea of integration was finally abandoned at the turn of the century, and integration ceased to be seen as the solution to "the Jewish question".

Integracja galicyjskich Żydów w świetle lwowskiej "Ojczyzny" (1881-1892)
Integration of Galician Jews in the light of the Lwów "Ojczyzna" (1881-1892)
Autorzy:
Jasnowski, Paweł
Opis:
Autor, przedstawiając genezę formacji, omawia następnie jej najważniejsze cele, program i działalność. Osobne miejsce poświęca reakcji na narastający antysemityzm i nacjonalizm żydowski (syjonizm) - ruchom, które w ostatecznym rozrachunku doprowadziły do atrofi i i dekompozycji obozu integracjonistów.
The article examines the history of Galician integrationists depicted in the light of their press organ, the Polish-Jewish bi-weekly "Ojczyzna", issued in Lwów from April 1881 to the middle of 1892. While presenting the origin of this social formation the author discusses its most prominent targets, programme, and activity. Special attention is paid to the reaction towards growing anti-Semitism and Jewish nationalism (Zionism), i.e. movements that ultimately resulted in the atrophy and decomposition of the integrationist camp.

The activities of Agudas Achim society and its ties with progressive synagogues in Lvov and Kraków
Działalność towarzystwa Agudas Achim i jego związki z synagogami postępowymi we Lwowie i Krakowie
Autorzy:
Maślak-Maciejewska, Alicja
Opis:
The article describes the ties between Agudas Achim („Alliance of Brethren”) society with the progressive Tempel synagogue from Lvov, its impact on the synagogue’s Polonization, as well as attempting to determine the influence of Agudas Achim on the remaining part of Galicia, with special emphasis and the local progressive community rallied around Tempel synagogue. The main areas of activity of Agudas Achim, which existed in the years 1882-1892, was education (pursued through the establishment of libraries, reading rooms and schools throughout Galicia), Polonization (effected through journalism, including the publishing of Ojczyzna, the society’s Polish-language bulletin), patriotic pursuits (organization of ceremonies commemorating Polish anniversaries and of lectures on Poland’s history). The society was also promoting Jewish-Christian rapprochement. The activities of Agudas Achim contributed to the partial Polonization of the Tempel synagogue in Lvov. From 1882, services were held in the synagogue on Polish national anniversaries, the purpose of which was to awaken national feelings in the Jews and manifest the union of Jews and Poles. During a service commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Relief of Vienna, the Tempel synagogue preacher Bernard Lӧwenstein delivered a sermon in Polish marking the occasion, preceding by two decades the official introduction of the Polish language to it. The service was accompanied by the singing in Polish of the sacred song Boże, coś Polskę and of Boże coś Judę, patterned on the former. The society also influenced the introduction of the Polish language to the synagogue’s administration and attempted to introduce the requirement of the knowledge of Polish in the competition for the job of a preacher in 1890. Agudas Achim also had personal ties with Tempel synagogue: its members included preacher B. Lӧwenstein and cantor Edward Darowski. The influence of Agudas Achim extended beyond Lvov, encompassing many Galician localities. This was due to a network of schools and reading rooms, the distribution of Ojczyzna and the activities of the Society’s delegates. Members of the Society hailed from tens of various centres. The ideas of Agudas Achim met with vivid response in the Kraków progressive milieu, which cherished the ideals of Polish patriotism and Polonization. Agudas Achim was joined by leading Kraków progressives, e.g., Józef Oettinger, Leon Horowitz, Jonatan Warschauer. The Kraków community, which was the largest group of society members from outside Lvov, also provided regular financial support to the Lvov organization. Topics connected with Kraków were present in Ojczyzna on a regular basis. One initiative supported especially strongly by Agudas Achim was the organization of patriotic ceremonies in the Kraków Tempel synagogue.

Gente Rutheni, natione Poloni : the Ruthenians of the Polish Nationality in Habsburg Galicia
Autorzy:
Świątek, Adam
Wydawca:
Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Press
Wydawnictwo Księgarnia Akademicka
Opis:
Polish historians and political leaders have often used the term gente Rutheni, natione Poloni to characterize figures of Ruthenian/Ukrainian descent who viewed themselves as part of a Polish political or national community. The duality and hybridity of theses figures’ identity have excluded them from traditional Polish and Ukrainian national narratives. Adam Świątek has given us the first fully encompassing work examining the persons, organizations, and ideologies of this group from the end of the eighteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. Based on a thorough examination of sources and literature, his monograph provides a nuanced account of how the concept and group were transformed and functioned in Habsburg Galicia. The volume is essential reading for all those interested in Polish-Ukrainian relations and those who wish to study varying national identities and historical concepts in the Galician crownland over the long nineteenth century. By undertaking an examination of a concept and group that did not succeed with the advent of modern nationalism, he enriches our understanding of the Habsburg world and modern Polish and Ukrainian nationhood.
