The autonomy of teachers is a manifestation of democratization, and thus freedom and creativity in action. Hence the question whether teachers in Polish schools use autonomy in terms of content, methods, didactic means and ways of assessing students, if so, with what frequency and whether the independence of teachers and their own initiative is correlated with the type of school - public or non-public? This article attempts to answer these questions.

We provide a critique of their argumentation and defend the opposite thesis: MAC is potentially morally worse than the three other options.

Tytuł:: Contemporary liberal concepts of property

Opis:: The author presents the assumptions which form the bedrock of modern liberal property theories. It refers to the conceptions of John Christman, James O. Grunebaum, Lawrence Becker, Stephen R. Munzer and Jeremy Waldron. All these philosophers have devoted separate monographs to the problems of ownership and their works seem representative of the entire liberal current in contemporary political philosophy. This paper does not provide a detailed analysis of the authors' views on property, but focuses on the elements that these theories share. These are: (1) the bundle theory of property rights; (2) the priority of distributive justice over ownership; (3) the belief that labour is not a property entitlement; (4) the assumption about the separation of production and distribution; (e) the belief in the redistributive role of the state.

Tytuł:: The development of autonomous EFL students : the necessity and requirement of present times and the duty of the modern language teacher : on the example of peer feedback

Opis:: Autonomy and independence were the key values in Western European philosophy, psychology, politics and pedagogy in the 20th century. They are essential in the development of a democratic society (Benson and Voller, 1997). Autonomy in foreign language learning appeared in the 1960s and 1970s while in 1971 the Council of Europe established the Modern Languages Project and founded the Foreign Languages Didactic Centre (CRAPEL) at the University of Nancy, France specializing in systems of learning in autonomy. The theories linking autonomy with peer feedback are those of Bound (1988) who defines the features and behaviour characteristics of an autonomous student. Bound (1988) suggests that an autonomous student undertakes initiative in the areas which require cooperation with other group members and being responsible for their development as well as considering a teacher to be an advisor is what brings autonomy close to peer feedback. Peer feedback is one of the methods in teaching foreign languages where feedback to a stu-dent is given by another student, not a teacher. This allows for more opportunities for the student to learn from each other. Peer feedback in foreign language learning provides variety in teaching as well as develops students' autonomy in the learning process. Dam (1995) and Pawlak (2006) suggest that learner autonomy makes use of peer assessment in the form of peer support and cooperation, whereas the role of the teacher is that of a supporting scaffolding and creating room for the development of autonomy. The aim of this article is to answer the question as to whether it is possible to achieve student autonomy in English by giving oral presentations and by being assessed by one's peers where the teacher's role is that of a supervisor, advisor and guide. In this approach the teacher is not the only person providing feedback.

Can truth be compatible with the media? : the questionable autonomy of reportage and the need for little crises

Opis:: Antonik explores the fame of Polish reportage and the way it impacts the functioning of the genre as a whole. He contextualises the prominence of reporters in the media, with critical takes on this phenomenon, which - like the voices that criticise reportage when it deviates from the truth - leads to heated debates on the condition of this section of cultural production. Antonik demonstrates that these two crises are linked by the strong position of the author; what is more, they indicate that reportage is becoming less autonomous. He presents reportage as a game with complex stakes involving all possible kinds of capital; debates on autonomy are tools of symbolic action which, thanks to the cultural force of the scandal, foster faith in the value and meaning of reportage - even in its impure, heteronomic form.

Tytuł:: Preimplantation genetic diagnosis and rational choice under risk and uncertainty

Opis:: In this paper I present an argument in favour of a parental duty to use preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). I argue that if embryos created in vitro were able to decide for themselves in a rational manner, they would sometimes choose PGD as a method of selection. Couples, therefore, should respect their hypothetical choices on a principle similar to that of patient autonomy. My thesis shows that no matter which moral doctrine couples subscribe to, they ought to conduct the PGD procedure in the situations when it is impossible to implant all of the created embryos and if there is a significant risk for giving birth to a child with a serious condition.
