Opis:
The variation in size and shape of Bearded Tit eggs was investigated in the Wielkopolska Region of western Poland in 1988-1992 and 1997-2000. The mean clutch size was 5.47 (95% CL: 5.25-5.70, n = 99), and differed markedly from year to year. Coefficients of variations for the mean egg characteristics in a clutch ranged from 1.91 (breadth) to 4.90 (volume). No significant correlation between egg length and breadth was found. Repeatability estimates were 0.50, 0.48, 0.50, 0.47 for length, breadth, volume and elongation index, respectively. The results suggest a relatively low heritability of egg dimensions in the population studied.

The analysis covered 1332 Tree Sparrow eggs, 1053 of them hatched, in 257 clutches of which 114 were fully successful, 119 partially so, and 24 were deserted. The mean egg mass in deserted clutches was lower than in clutches where hatching success was total or partial but not significantly so. The mean hatching success per clutch increased with the mean egg mass. The individual eggs in fully hatched clutches weighed significantly more (2.21 g) than those in partially hatched clutches (2.17 g), and were also heavier than "infertile" eggs(2.14 g). During nest inspections to ascertain the egg laying sequence, the egg mass in 5-egg clutches with full and partial hatching success was found to be higher than in deserted clutches. The eggs in fully hatched clutches were broader than "infertile" eggs.

445 eggs of the Collared Flycatcher from 82 clutches were measured during three breeding seasons (1997-1999). The mean length was 17.82 ą 0.80 mm, breadth - 3.45 ą 0.37 mm and volume - 1.65 ą 0.14 cm3. Egg dimensions were positively correlated. No significant differences in egg sizes during the three seasons were found. This suggests that the environmental conditions in the Białowieża Forest during the study period did not change or had no influence on egg size. Laying sequence had no influence on egg dimensions; only egg length depended on clutch size. Some characteristics of the females did affect the size of eggs: heavier birds and those with longer tarsi laid larger eggs. Older females did not lay significantly larger eggs than younger females. In conclusion, egg size in the Collared Flycatcher from the Białowieża Forest appears to be influenced more by the characteristics of the female than by environmental conditions.

The seasonal decline in egg-volume on the basis of the individual changes in 35 known-age female Common Terns Sterna hirundo was studied with data available for 3-6 years. Interindividual differences were significant for both laying dates and egg-volume. Thus, to examine whether the decline was an effect of an assortment of females with the timing of breeding according to their individual egg-volume, the individual values of laying date were correlated with egg-volume. Correlation was not significant, suggesting that seasonal decline in egg-volume was not due to interindividual differences. Instead, egg-volume showed a gradual decrease with the progress of the season at intraindividual level i.e. the later an individual female laid in the season the smaller was the egg-volume. Moreover, the seasonal decline in egg-volume was not due to a simultaneous increase in egg-volume with an advancement of the timing of breeding with age, since the rate of seasonal decrease in egg-volume was similar for young and old birds. Individual average of laying date accounted for 22% of the individual average of fledgling production whereas egg-volume was not significantly correlated with fledging production. Thus, it is suggested that seasonal decline in egg-volume is a non-adaptive consequence of physiological effect of condition on both timing of breeding and egg-volume.
