Opis:: Sensitive topics in qualitative fi eldwork typically include health problems, sexual practices, addictions, illegal activity and death (Campbell 2002; Lee 1993; Liamputtong 2006). Yet, the situation of memories of intergroup violence committed by ingroup members on outgroups - where a community is confronted with the fact that their fellow members have harmed members of other groups - should also be considered as a sensitive topic. An especially sensitive situation occurs when research is conducted in a small community with relatively strong social control maintained through networks of relationships between its members. The aim of this paper is to explore the sensitivity of respondents in their remembering and forgetting of the harm done by members of their own group to the "Others" in local communities, to diagnose the diffi culties in conducting fi eldwork on this topic, and to present various methods of overcoming them. This article is based on experience from a project dedicated to the social memory of violence committed by Poles against members of other ethnic groups within local communities during World War II.

Opis:: Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób problematyka niepamięci została przedstawiona w reportażu "Kajś. Opowieść o Górnym Śląsku" Zbigniewa Rokity. Analizy tekstu przeprowadzone zostały przy wykorzystaniu metody close reading i osadzone w obszarze memory studies. Badania wykazały, że reportaż – jako istotny nośnik pamięci – pełni obecnie ważną funkcję w kształtowaniu obrazów przeszłości. Dokonana przez Rokitę rekonstrukcja dziejów rodzinnych pozwoliła mu utrwalić losy bliskich w indywidualnej pamięci, a dodatkowo – za sprawą publikacji reportażowego tomu – historia ta zaczęła funkcjonować jako ważny komponent współtworzący śląską pamięć kulturową.
The aim of this article is to present how the idea of non-memory is expressed in the reportage "Kajś. A Tale of Upper Silesia" by Zbigniew Rokita. The text was analyzed using the close reading method and situated within the f ield of mem-ory studies. The research showed that the reportage – as an important medium of memory – currently plays a crucial role in shaping images of the past. Rokita’s reconstruction of the family history allowed him to immortalize his ancestors in individual memory, and additionally – because of the book publication – their history became an important component of Silesian cultural memory.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to analyze the influence of historical, cultural and social factors influencing the processes of remembering and forgetting about crimes committed by Poles on members of other ethnic groups in two local communities: Pawłokoma, where Ukrainians were murdered in retaliation act in 1945 and Gniewczyna, where in 1942 local firemen imprisoned, tortured and gave away Jewish inhabitants to the German gendarmes. Using the data collected during individual interviews with three categories of respondents: local leaders, other members of the local communities and "experts" two types of such factors will be distinguished: repetitive, occurring in both localities and specific, determining differences among attitudes of members of both communities.

Opis:: The author of the paper discusses the category of memory which has a permanent place in aretology as an integral component of the cardinal virtue of prudence. Aristotle saw memory as a key element of intellectual activity, because without it, recall and learning would not be possible. Selective memory allows us to filter information, focusing on the most relevant and helpful in everyday life. This is a natural mechanism to protect against information overload. Collective memory includes ideas about a given community’s past and can be distorted by phenomena such as collective amnesia. Memory also plays an important role in shaping truthfulness and assessing one’s own behavior.
Autor artykułu omawia kategorię pamięci, która ma swe ugruntowane miejsce w aretologii jako integralny składnik kardynalnej cnoty roztropności. Arystoteles postrzegał pamięć jako kluczowy element intelektualnej aktywności, gdyż bez niej nie byłyby możliwe przypominanie i nauka. Pamięć selektywna pozwala nam filtrować informacje, skupiając się na tych najbardziej istotnych i pomocnych w codziennym życiu. Jest to naturalny mechanizm chroniący przed przeciążeniem informacyjnym. Pamięć zbiorowa obejmuje wyobrażenia o przeszłości danej społeczności i może być wypaczona przez zjawiska takie jak zbiorowa amnezja. Pamięć odgrywa też ważną rolę w kształtowaniu prawdomówności i ocenie własnych zachowań.
