«Oda quiere dezir ffin e acabaminto de las cosas» : el origen y la evolución de la expresión «quiere decir» en español
Autorzy:
Zieliński, Andrzej
Opis:
The objective of the paper is to analyze the origin and the evolution of the explanatory value of the construction <querer ‘want’ + infinitive>, documented in Castilian texts from the Middle Ages. Through a relatively large corpus of Latin texts (5th–12th centuries) and Spanish texts (13th-15th centuries), the Author explores the main linguistic and discursive reasons that determined its use in the Spanish language.

Del significado conceptual al procedimental-conceptual : el caso de la perífrasis discursiva en español
From conceptual to procedural-conceptual meaning : the case of the discourse verbal periphrasis < llegar a +infinitive> in Spanish
Autorzy:
Zieliński, Andrzej
Opis:
The purpose of the paper is to explore diachronically the verbal periphrasis whose origin, linked to the birth of the prose of Alfonso X of Castile, allowed another direction of change thus avoiding the intermediate stage of the time domain. It is subtracted, therefore, of the commonly admitted evolutionary patterns of the periphrasis of verbs of motion. Due to “cultured” origin, the acquired conceptual meaning of the verbal periphrasis mitigates into the procedural-conceptual one, similar to discourse markers. Furthermore, with the help of a relatively large corpus, which covers the major works written between the thirteenth and twentieth centuries, the author will try to perceive and discover the reasons that led to its fi nal assessment in Spanish.

Grammaticalization of the Lithuanian comparative "-jau(s)"
Autorzy:
Ostrowski, Norbert
Opis:
When analysing Old Lithuanian texts from the 16th and the first half of the 17th century, one can notice that comparatives with the -jaus suffix tend to appear in comparative constructions with connectives containing negation, e.g. Bet esch daugiaus dirbau / neig kursai isch yũ (VEE 102: 16-17) ‘but I laboured more abundantly than they all’ (1 Corinthians 15: 10). This is the "particle comparative" in Stassen’s terms (1985, 2001). On the other hand, authors avoided comparatives with the -jaus suffix in other types of comparative constructions (with the preposition už and the genitive). Philological and etymological analysis of neg(i) and nei(gi) ‘than’ shows that these connectives developed out of former sentence negations. This sheds some light on the syntactic environment in which the grammaticalization of the comparative suffix -jaus occurred. The Lithuanian comparative suffix -jaũ (OLith. -jau-s, e.g. geriaus ‘better’) goes back to the postponed focus particle -jaũ, which functions as a marker of EMPHATIC ASSERTION OF IDENTITY (König 1991). The primary contrastive function of the ﷓jau-s suffix can be compared to the Old Greek -τερος (Old Indic -taraḥ) in such usage as δεξίτερος ‘right(-hand)’. The grammaticalization of the focus marker jau(s) has occurred in sentences consisting of juxtaposed and contrasted clauses – the "conjoined comparative" in Stassen’s terms (Stassen 1985: 38, 44), and in these sentences, -jaus filled the role of pragmatic marker and focalizer, emphasizing one of two compared, oppositive items.

Taboo-based intensifiers in Arabic and Polish
Autorzy:
Zawrotna, Magdalena
Opis:
This article is a description and comparison of Polish and Arabic taboo-based intensifiers in terms of both the semantic domains from which they are derived and their level of desemanticization. For this objective, four domains were selected: (1) death, (2) religion, God, and demons, (3) sexuality, and (4) family. Within those domains an array of linguistic forms were analysed with the aim of examining to what extent they retained traces of the original meaning. Another question to elucidate is whether the transition from one category to another in the process of semantically-driven grammaticalization is accompanied by the loss of the taboo element of these lexemes.

On the grammaticalization of partitives into degree adverbs : the case of Polish "odrobina" 'crumb; a little' and Swedish "smula" 'crumb; a little'
Autorzy:
Herda, Damian
Opis:
Apart from degree adverbs derived from adjectives, such as wysoce 'highly' or starkt 'strongly,' both Polish and Swedish possess a set of grammaticalized partitive nominals which perform the function of degree modification, e.g. odrobina 'crumb; a little' and smula 'crumb; a little,' as used in odrobinę lepszy 'a little better' and vänta en smula 'wait a little,' respectively. Analysing English data, Traugott (2008) observes that in order for such an item to grammaticalize into a degree adverb, it must first acquire the status of an indefinite quantifier, in which case it still co-occurs with nominal collo-cates, yet solely encodes the abstract notion of quantity. Accordingly, this process can be schematized as follows: partitive ('a part/unit of') > quantifier ('a small/large quan-tity of') > degree modifier ('to a small/large degree/extent'). On the basis of linguistic material extracted from a number of lexicographic sources, it is argued here that the validity of the above-described grammaticalization path can likewise be extended to the history of the two aforementioned nouns, viz. the Polish lexeme odrobina 'crumb; a little' and its Swedish counterpart smula 'crumb; a little,' both of which developed the adverbial sense only after having established themselves as vague quantifiers.

To be "a boat load healthier" and not to "care a single scrap" : on the adverbialization of English size nouns
Autorzy:
Herda, Damian
Opis:
While the grammaticalization of English size nouns into vague quantifiers has already received a considerable amount of scholarly attention, their subsequent syntactic expansion beyond the nominal domain remains an under-researched area. In particular, little has hitherto been written about the possible factors contributing to the emergence of additional adverbial uses of such items. Based on synchronic corpus data, this paper therefore aims to partially fill in this gap by providing an analysis of the adverbialization patterns of nine nominal forms of this kind, namely bit, scrap, shred, heap, heaps, load, loads, lot, and lots, whose empirical tokens have been classified into six categories: (I) verbal inherent modification, (II) verbal extent modification, (III) adverbial ambiguous, (IV) object-pronominal, (V) adjectival modification of positives, and (vi) adjectival modification of comparatives. The results demonstrate that in the verbal domain, most of the analyzed forms reveal a preference for pronominal uses, in which they function as an argument of the verb rather than a genuine degree adverb, while in the adjectival domain, a majority of the items, especially ‘large size’ nouns, exhibit a conspicuous propensity to combine with the comparative forms of adjectives/adverbs. Moreover, it is shown that there exists a strong positive correlation between the items’ respective degrees of grammaticalization in the quantifier function and their extents of adverbialization, operationalized as the proportion of pertinent attestations in corpus samples. Thus, the study underscores the role of frequency in grammaticalization on the one hand, and points to the importance of paradigmatic analogy on the other.
