The text presents several demands of methodological research in the field of media studies, supported by the results of a research on the image of Ryszard Krauze on the pages of nationwide newspapers from July to September 2007. The author hopes that the thesis contained in the article will be an impulse to start a discussion on the methodology of media studies research.

Tytuł:: Methods of Evidence-Based Anatomy : a guide to conducting systematic reviews and meta-analysis of anatomical studies

Opis:: Evidence-Based Anatomy (EBA) is the concept of applying evidence-based principles and research methods to the anatomical sciences. While narrative reviews are common in the anatomical sciences, true systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analysis (MA) are only beginning to grow in popularity. In order to enhance the quality of future EBA studies, and ensure the clinical reliability of their results, a uniform methodology is needed. In this paper, we present a step-by-step methodological guide for performing SRs and MAs of anatomical studies. We address the EBA-specific challenges in each step of the SR and MA process, and discuss methods and strategies to overcome these difficulties. Furthermore, we discuss in detail the statistical methods used in MA of anatomical data, including multi-categorical and single-categorical pooled prevalence estimates, as well as pooled means of one group. Lastly, we discuss the major limitations of EBA, including the lack of a proper quality assessment tool for anatomical studies. The methods described in this paper present a uniform road map for future EBA studies.

Tytuł:: Ethno-racial categorisations for biomedical studies : the fair selection of research participants and population stratification

Opis:: We argue that there are neither scientific nor social reasons to require gathering ethno-racial data, as defined in the US legal regulations if researchers have no prior hypotheses as to how to connect this type of categorisation of human participants of clinical trials with any mechanisms that could explain alleged interracial health differences and guide treatment choice. Although we agree with the normative perspective embedded in the calls for the fair selection of participants for biomedical research, we demonstrate that current attempts to provide and elucidate the criteria for the fair selection of participants, in particular, taking into account ethno-racial categories, overlook important epistemic and normative challenges to implement the results of such race-sorting requirements. We discuss existing arguments for and against gathering ethno-racial statistics for biomedical research and present a new one that refers to the assumption that prediction is epistemically superior to accommodation. We also underline the importance of closer interaction between research ethics and the methodology of biomedicine in the case of population stratifications for medical research, which requires weighing non-epistemic values with methodological constraints.

Recepcja podręcznika "Analiza zawartości prasy" w kręgach badaczy mediów, czyli zaraźliwa metoda badawcza

Opis:: "Analiza zawartości prasy" autorstwa Walerego Pisarka, która ukazała się 1983 roku, stała się ważną książką w popularyzacji analizy zawartości. Badacze mediów otrzymali monografię w języku polskim poświęconą w całości tej metodzie. Artykuł stanowi próbę pokazania, w jaki sposób badacze wykorzystywali analizę zawartości w rozwiązywaniu problemów badawczych w XXI wieku. Ze względu zarówno na wielość publikacji, w których wykorzystywano tę metodę, jak i na wymogi edytorsko-formalne, wprowadzono następujące kryteria wyboru: skupiono się na monografiach wydanych w latach 2001-2018; celowo zrezygnowano z artykułów, które zostały opublikowane na łamach periodyków naukowych; wybrano książki reprezentujące różne ośrodki akademickie. Starano się także pokazać wykorzystanie analizy zawartości prasy do badań mediów elektronicznych. Wydaje się, że takie podejście do tematu uwypukliło możliwość zastosowania tej metody w różnie zaprojektowanych badaniach mediów masowych.
"Press Content Analysis" written by Walery Pisarek in 1983, has become an important and significant book in the popularization of press content analysis. Media researchers received a monograph in Polish devoted entirely to this research method. The article is an attempt to show how researchers used content analysis to solve research problems in the 21st century. Due to the multitude of publications in which this method was used, as well as the editorial and formal requirements, the following selection criteria were introduced: The study focused on monographs published in 2001-2018, the articles published in scientific journals were excluded deliberately. Moreover the analysis covered books published by various academic institutions. Efforts were made to show the use of press content analysis for electronic media research. It seems that this approach highlights the possibility of using this method in contemporary mass media studies.

Jakościowa analiza danych wizualnych w badaniach zachowań informacyjnych

Opis:: Cel/Teza: Artykuł zawiera metodologiczną refleksję nad jakościową analizą wizualnych danych empirycznych jako procedurą poznawczą we współczesnych badaniach zachowań informacyjnych. Możliwość wdrożenia takiego podejścia została zweryfikowana na podstawie studium przypadku spersonalizowanych przestrzeni informacyjnych w życiu codziennym studentów pierwszego roku zarządzania informacją w roku akademickim 2018/2019. Koncepcja/Metody badań: W dociekaniach zastosowano realistyczne stanowisko epistemologiczne, podejście jakościowe i opisowe oraz cztery metody/techniki badawcze: analizę i krytykę piśmiennictwa, studium przypadku, rysunek jako narzędzie mapowania mentalnego i analizę tematyczną. Wyniki i wnioski: Analiza danych wizualnych jest owocna poznawczo, umożliwia uchwycenie wielowymiarowej „rzeczywistości informacyjnej”, tak jak postrzegają ją użytkownicy (współczynnik humanistyczny). Jest jednak procedurą czasochłonną, wymagającą skrupulatności, solidnej autorefleksji badacza oraz pozostawienia jasno opisanej „ścieżki audytu” w celu zapewnienia wiarygodności i intersubiektywnej sprawdzalności dociekań. Oryginalność/Wartość poznawcza: Artykuł skupia się na innowacyjnych procedurach badawczych, praktycznie nieomawianych w polskiej literaturze naukowej z zakresu informatologii. Integruje podejście wizualne z indywidualnymi przestrzeniami informacyjnymi, wpisując się w najnowsze trendy poznawcze w obszarze zachowań informacyjnych. Łączy również refleksję metateoretyczną z praktyką badawczą.
Purpose/Thesis: The paper contains a methodological reflection on qualitative analysis of visual empirical data as a research procedure in the contemporary human information behavior research. The possibility of implementing this approach has been tested on a case study of personalized information spaces in everyday life of undergraduate information management students in the academic year 2018/2019. Approach/Methods: The reported research employs the realist epistemological stance, qualitative and descriptive approaches, and four methods/techniques: critical literature review, case study, drawing as a mental mapping tool, and thematic analysis. Results and conclusions: Visual data analysis is cognitively fruitful; it enables grasping the multidimensional “information reality” as perceived by the users (the humanistic coefficient). However, it is time-consuming, it requires meticulousness and self-reflection on the part of the researcher; it must also leave a clear audit trail to assure credibility and intersubjective verifiability of investigations. Originality/Value: The article is concerned with innovative research procedures, rarely discussed in Polish information science literature. Combining visual approach with individual information spaces, it corresponds to the latest methodological and topical trends in the field of information behavior. It also links theoretical reflection with the research practice.
