Morphometric analysis of European house mice
Autorzy:
Macholan, M.
Powiązania:
Acta Theriologica
Opis:
Skulls of 892 house mice of five species (Mus Linnaeus, 1758), collected from 136 localities across Europe and Morocco, were studied. The analysis revealed that variations in size affected most of the characters considered, indicating a need to size-adjust the data.

Morphometry and distribution of Senecio nemorensis agg. species (Asteraceae) in Poland
Autorzy:
Skubała, Kaja
Opis:
A morphometric analysis based on 316 herbarium specimens of Senecio nemorensis agg. indicated the occurrence of the following four species in Poland: S. germanicus Wallr., S. hercynicus Herborg, S. ovatus (G. Gaertn. et al.) Willd. and S. ucranicus Hodálová. Principal component analysis (PCA), analysis of variance (ANOVA)/Kruskal-Wallis test and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) were applied. Quantitative characters such as supplementary bract length, leaf base width, ligule length and the supplementary/involucral bract length ratio clearly discriminated taxa within S. nemorensis agg. Included is a distribution map of the investigated species based on the examined material, with particular emphasis on the course of the northeastern boundary of S. hercynicus and the northwestern boundary of S. ucranicus. Also given is a determination key for species within S. nemorensis agg. in Poland, together with morphological descriptions of particular species.

High intraspecific genetic and morphological variation in the pioneer lichen Cladonia rei colonising slag dumps
Autorzy:

Opis:
This study investigates the genetic and morphological variability of the lichen Cladonia rei inhabiting strongly contaminated postsmelting slag dumps in southern Poland. Altogether, 27 C. rei samples were analysed, including 17 from a single population in one dump. The phylogenetic analysis includes samples of C. rei, outgroup species, and external sequences of Cladonia section representatives from GenBank. Comparative analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA sequences revealed the presence of 19 C. rei haplotypes overall, including several of the most frequent, of which 11 are represented by single individuals only. As many as 12 haplotypes were recorded within a single population. Three strongly supported monophyletic clades comprised of specimens from different geographical regions were recovered. Morphometric analysis showed great phenotypic variability within particular clades. Apart from a full range of previously known morphological forms of the species, an additional specific morphotype was recognised in the dumps; however, its representatives do not create a monophyletic group. High genetic variability within a single population suggests that C. rei has a great potential for colonising anthropogenic habitats. This attribute emphasises the role of this lichen as an essential pioneer in the early stages of natural regeneration of such sites.

In the presented article, we attempted to interpret Magdalenian backed bladelets in terms of recognizing the methods of their production. For this purpose, we studied the microblade technology, the intentional fracturing of blanks using specific procedures, including the microburin technique, and retouching. We applied typological, morphometrical, and morphological studies. We based our conclusions on the results of technological studies of 154 artefacts – backed bladelets and microburins, coming from three sites – Ćmielów 95 “Mały Gawroniec”, Podgrodzie 16, and Maszycka Cave. As a result, we obtained preliminary data on the final stages of the chaîne opératoire in the production of backed bladelets.

Macrobiotus derkai, a new species of Tardigrada (Eutardigrada, Macrobiotidae, huziori group) from the Colombian Andes (South America)
Autorzy:

Opis:
A new species, Macrobiotus derkai sp. nov., is described from a moss sample collected in the alpine zone of Sierra Nevada del Cocuy Mts (NE Colombia). It differs from the most similar species, Macrobiotus huziori Michalczyk & Kaczmarek, 2006 mainly in the location of the second macroplacoid and in the dimensions of accessory points on the claws. Eggs of the new species have the same type of areolation as eggs of M. huziori but they differ from the latter in the size and number of processes. The differences between the new species and others having similar number and shape of placoids are discussed. An identification key for these species is also provided. A round depression on the dorsal head cuticle is reported in Tardigrada for the first time. The results of a morphometric analysis of the new species are also given.

Opis:
Systematics of holarctic Sorex arcticus-Sorex tundrensis species complex has been in dispute; the current literature places North American and Eurasian populations in S. arcticus, separated by S. tundrensis in the Yukon and in Alaska. Results of morphometric analysis of the three populations indicate that the Eurasian shrews more closely resemble tundrensis than arcticus, and they are referred to that taxon.

Genome size and phenotypic variation of Nymphaea (Nymphaeaceae) species from Eastern Europe and temperate Asia

Opis:
Despite long-term research, the aquatic genus Nymphaea still possesses major taxonomic challenges. High phenotypic plasticity and possible interspecific hybridization often make it impossible to identify individual specimens. The main aim of this study was to assess phenotypic variation in Nymphaea taxa sampled over a wide area of Eastern Europe and temperate Asia. Samples were identified based on species-specific genome sizes and diagnostic morphological characters for each taxon were then selected. A total of 353 specimens from 32 populations in Poland, Russia and Ukraine were studied, with nine biometric traits being examined. Although some specimens morphologically matched N. ×borealis (a hybrid between N. alba and N. candida) according to published determination keys, only one hybrid individual was revealed based on genome size data. Other specimens with intermediate morphology possessed genome size corresponding to N. alba, N. candida or N. tetragona. This indicates that natural hybridization between N. alba and N. candida is not as frequent as previously suggested. Our results also revealed a considerably higher variation in the studied morphological traits (especially the quantitative ones) in N. alba and N. candida than reported in the literature. A determination key for the investigated Nymphaea species is provided, based on taxonomically-informative morphological characters identified in our study.
