Opis:
Vegetation classification is a tool for organizing the patterns and diversity of plant communities. It is used in nature conservation, and helps to understand the role of vegetation in the biosphere. Given the rapidly diminishing opportunity to understand the vegetation diversity of Tajikistan located in the Middle Asian region, phytosociological surveys using the floristic-ecological approach and the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale were undertaken in 2006. After 18 years of research, with a total of 55 research expeditions to Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, it is time to summarise and make a first attempt to establish a comprehensive classification system for the entire vegetation of Tajikistan and the surrounding areas. As a first step, the Vegetation of Middle Asia (VMA) database with records from three countries: Tajikistan (4,130 relevés), Kyrgyzstan (1,681 relevés) and Uzbekistan (13 relevés) was created. The internal comparison of all the plots and the analysis of the similarities with the vegetation of Iran, Russia, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Pakistan, and China make it possible to present the comprehensive list of plant communities organized in 45 classes, 47 orders, 83 alliances, 297 associations, and 237 rankless units. In addition to those described in our previous works, we propose also several new sytaxa: Eremogono griffithii-Nepetetea podostachyos, Artemisio persicae-Stipetea drobovii, Festucetea alaico-krylovianae, Carici koshewnikowii-Asperuletea oppositifoliae, Trichodesmo incani-Pachypterygietea brevipes, Aceretalia turkestanici, Juniperetalia seravschanicae, Crataegetalia ponticae, Populetalia pruinoso-euphraticae, Salici capusii- Hippophaeetalia rhamnoidis, Carici stenophylloidis-Stipetalia drobovii, Eritrichion pamirico-subjacquemontii, Stipetum kazachstanicae, Caricetum pamirensis, and Bolboschoenetum affinis. Tis systematic compilation of data, based on our fieldwork and literature data, is not definitive, and certainly the rich and diverse vegetation of Middle Asia requires further studies incorporating also modern LIDAR and satellite techniques.

Opis:
This paper discusses the floristic structure, distribution and habitat requirements of a new forest syntaxon, Populetum talassicae ass. nova. The potential range of the Populetum talassicae association comprises the central Pamir-Alai and Tian-Shan Mountains in Middle Asia. The biotope of this community comprises high mountain river valleys and shore zones of mountain lakes situ- ated at elevations between 2200 and 2750 m. Phytocoenoses of the Populetum talassicae association are characterized by a clear predominance in the tree layer of a characteristic species of the association ‒ Populus talassica. Shrubs are not so abundant; how- ever, the undergrowth layer of the community could reach up to 60% of the total cover, consisting mainly of Salix spp., Hipophaë rhamnoides, Lonicera stenantha, Juniperus semiglobosa and J. seravschanica. The herbaceous layer is quite rich and has about 20 species on average. Among associated species mainly meadow, rush and marsh taxa have been noted. Regarding the considerable cover of the meadow species, the association of Populetum talassicae has been classified as the Populetea laurifolio-suaveolentis syntaxon. A new plant alliance was proposed ‒ Populion talassicae all. nova with Pedicularis dolichorhiza and Astragalus tibetanus as diagnostic species. The described forest association is one of the rarest and most rapidly disappearing wood communities in Tajikistan, which means that special conservation attention is called for.

Aims: To propose the first syntaxonomical scheme for the graminoid steppe vegetation of the montane and alpine zones in the Pamir-Alai Mts. in Tajikistan with some remarks on its environmental gradients. Location: Tajikistan. Methods: A total of 155 relevés were sampled in 2015 using the seven-degree cover-abundance scale of Braun-Blanquet and subsequently 148 of these relevés were selected and classified by the modified TWINSPAN method using the four step interval scale with cutoff levels of 0%, 5%, 10% and 25% and total inertia as a measure of cluster heterogeneity. Diagnostic species were identified using the phi coefficient as a fidelity measure. The detrended correspondance analysis was used to determine the relation between steppe, scree and rock plots and the major gradients in species composition. Results: Four associations - Stipetum drobovii, Stipetum lipskyi, Stipetum margellanicae and Stipetum jagnobicae - were distinguished, as well as two communities of Bromus tectorum-Stipa arabica comm. and Stipa turkestanica subsp. trichoides comm. Because of their floristic distinctiveness, all of these communities were assigned to the new alliance Poo bulbosae-Artemision persicae and the provisionary order Carici stenophylloidis-Stipetalia arabicae. The identified plant communities were included temporarily in the Irano-Turanian class of steppe vegetation - Astragalo microcephali-Brometea tomentelli Quézel 1973 em. Parolly 2004. The main factors determining the species composition of the studied associations are altitude and cover of organic top soil, which have a major influence on the development of the particular type of steppe vegetation. Conclusions: For the first time, we have initiated research on the diversity of steppe vegetation in Tajikistan and Middle Asia. The final assignment of the western Pamir Alai graminoid steppe phytocoenoses, particularly at the higher syntaxnomical rank with identification of relations between the Cleistogenetea squarrosae and the Astragalo-Brometea steppes, needs further detailed investigation in the surrounding areas of Middle and Central Asia.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of phytosociological research conducted on the vegetation of rock clefts and ledges in the Pamir-Alai Mountains (Tajikistan, Middle Asia). During the field studies, done in 2010-2012, 101 phytosociological relevés were taken. Plant species were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. Communities of calcareous rock clefts and ledges with small soil amounts from several ranges (Zeravshan Mts, Hissar Mts, Hazratishokh Mts, Darvaz Mts, Rushan Mts and Vanch Mts), inhabiting mainly the alpine and subnival zone, have been described. A synopsis of the rock communities of the Pamir-Alai is proposed. In the examined vegetation plots 77 vascular plant and 6 moss species were noted. The most frequent were: Achoriphragma pinnatifidum, Artemisia rutifolia, Asperula albiflora, Campanula incanescens, C. lehmanniana, Parietaria judaica, Pentanema albertoregelia, Poa relaxa and Stipa zeravshanica among vascular plants and Brachythecium albicans and Bryum caespiticum among mosses. Most of them are narrow endemics of Tajikistan or Middle Asia. The collected material presents most of the variability among the phytocoenoses of large crevices and rock ledges in limestone massifs in the alpine and subnival zones. As a result of field research and numerical analyses, 7 associations have been distinguished: Achoriphragmetum pinnatifidi, Asperulo albiflorae-Stipetum zeravshanicae, Inuletum glaucae, Paraquilegietum anemonoidis, Pentanemetum albertoregeliae, Rhinactinidietum popovii and Saussureaetum ovatae. The distinctiveness of habitat and species composition of Middle Asiatic rock communities makes it necessary to distinguish a new suballiance, Pentanemenion albertoregeliae, within the Asperulo albiflorae-Poion relaxae alliance. The main factors determining the species composition of classified associations seem to be the elevation above sea level and exposition. Alpine rock communities are one of the most unique and interesting plant formations in the moutainous areas of Pamir-Alai. Despite not being species-rich they often harbour many specialists adapted to harsh and extreme environments, especially in areas of Mediterranean-like climate.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of phytosociological researches on rocky slope vegetation in Tajikistan with the aim to establish a comprehensive syntaxonomical classifi cation system. Field studies were conducted in 2010–2014 in Pamir Alai ranges and Pamirian plateau. Nearly 500 relevés documenting rock and scree vegetation were made according to the Braun-Blanquet method. Numerical analyses of selected 58 relevés representing dwarf shrub vegetation on rock ledges made it possible to distinguish: Ephedro glaucae- Spiraeion baldschuanicae and Ephedrion regeliano-fedtschenkoi alliances, as well as Spiraeetum baldschuanicae, Rhamnetum coriaceae, Pentaphylloidetum parvifoliae and Pentaphylloidetum dryadanthoidis associations, community of Ephedra glauca and community of Rhamnus minuta. The classifi cation of vegetation of dwarf shrubs on rock walls occurring in the Pamir Alai Mts is proposed. Because of the species composition, physiognomy and microhabitat conditions, the plant communities were included into Artemisio santolinifoliae- Berberidetea sibiricae class Ermakov et al. 2006. The main factors determining the species composition of the classifi ed associations seem to be the elevation above sea level. The newly described syntaxa are largely defined by species restricted to very narrow ranges in Middle Asia.

Opis:
The paper presents results of phytosociological researches on rock faces vegetation of Pamir Alai Mountains. In total, 182 phytosociological relevés were made during the field studies conducted in 2006–2012, applaying the Braun-Blanquet method. Plant communities of calcareous firm rock faces and small fissures, inhabiting mainly the alpine and subnival zone in several ranges (e.g. Zeravshan Mts, Hissar Mts, Hazratishoh Mts, Darvaz Mts, Rushan Mts and Vanch Mts) are herein described for the first time. A hierarchical syntaxonomic synopsis of the rock communities of the Pamir Alai is provided. The collected vegetation samples represent the majority of the variability among the phytocoenoses of small crevices in limestone massifs in alpine and subnival zone. As a result of field research and numerical analyses, 14 associations have been distinguished: Sergietum regelii, Scutellarietum megalodontae, Scutellarietum rubromaculatae, Scutellarietum orbicularis, Campanuletum lehmannianae, Violetum majchurensis, Achoriphragmetum darvazici, Achoriphragmetum turkestanici, Asperuletum fedtschenkoi, Andrachnetum fedtschenkoi, Eritrichietum turkestanici, Minuartio litwinowii-Phaeonychietum surculosi, Silenetum kuhistanicae, Silenetum samarcandensis. Main factors determining the species composition of the classified associations seem to be the crevice type, the elevation above sea level and the availability of soil. Rocky habitats in Tajikistan, probably because of their high separateness and marginal position within the Irano-Turanian province, act as a refuge for many narrowly distributed plant taxa.

Opis:
The paper discusses the floristic structure, distribution and habitat requirements of a shrubby community of Salicetum schugnanicae ass. nova. The potential range of the association is described within the Pamir Alai Mts in Middle Asia. The biotope of this community comprises alpine, humid tall-herbs with shrubby physiognomy on relatively flat slopes of mountain valleys. Th plots of the association were found at elevations between 2,500 and 3,500 m above sea level. Phytocoenoses of the Salicetum schugnanicae are characterised by an apparent domination of a characteristic species Salix schugnanicae in shrub layer. The density of the willow thicket is moderate, from 35 to 90%. The herb layer of the community is moderately rich in species and consists mainly of taxa typical for Mulgedio-Aconitetea class (Angelica komarovii, Codonopsis clematoides, Geranium collinum, G. regelii, Heracleum lehmannianum and Polygonum coriarium) and Nardion alliance (e.g. Blysmus compressus, Carex orbicularis subsp. hissaro-darvasica, Dactylorhiza umbrosa, Heleocharis meridionalis, Pedicularis peduncularis, Primula iljinii, Swertia juzepczukii). Also the moss layer is abundant as it is typically for peaty or boggy habitats similar to alpine mires. The most frequent bryophytes noted in the plots are: Brachythecium mildeanum, Calliergonella cuspidata or Cratoneuron commutatum. The described willow association is one of the rarest and most rapidly disappearing plant communit in Tajikistan. This makes the association of highest conservation priority and special management attention.

Nowak, Arkadiusz Sebastian
Opis:
This paper discusses the floristic structure, distribution and habitat requirements of a new aquatic syntaxon, Stuckenietum amblyphyllae ass. nova. Patches of the Stuckenietum amblyphyllae association occur in the Pamir Alai Mountains in Middle Asia (Tajikistan). The biotope of this community represent high mountain rivers and ponds at the bottom of glacial river valleys situ- ated at elevations between 1900 and 3800 m. Patches of the Stuckenietum amblyphyllae association are characterised by a clear predominance of the typical species, i.e. Stuckenia amblyphylla, which occupies an aerial extent of between near 40 up to 90% of the surface studied. Patches of the community are poor in species, comprising a maximum of five taxa. Among associated species mainly rush, aquatic, meadow and marsh taxa have been noted. The Stuckenietum amblyphyllae community prefers cold, open, alkaline waters with medium flow-rate, ranging in depth from 15 to 75 cm. It is also, but rarely, found in the mountain ponds. Together with the Stuckenia filiformis community it designates in the Pamir Alai Mountains the upper limit of aquatic vegetation.
