Understanding perception of time in terms of perception of change
Autorzy:
Klincewicz, Michał
Opis:
In this paper, I offer an account of the dependence relation between perception of change and the subjective flow of time that is consistent with some extant empirical evidence from priming by unconscious change. This view is inspired by the one offered by William James, but it is articulated in the framework of contemporary functionalist accounts of mental qualities and higher-order theories of consciousness. An additional advantage of this account of the relationship between perception of change and subjective time is that is makes sense of instances where we are not consciously aware of changes but still experience the flow of time.

Introduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate two measures in a cognitive examination: psychomotor function and the perception of time (PT) in patients after intravenous anesthesia for endoscopic procedures. Material and Methods. We tested 23 anesthetized patients (Anesthesia Group, AG) and 17 not anesthetized patients (Control Group, CG). The Dufour Cross-Shaped Apparatus (DA) was used to assess quick reactions. Perception of time (PT) was measured for 1-, 2-, 5-, and 7-second intervals. The tests were performed before the anesthesia was administered and 1.5, 3, and 6 hours after the procedure was completed. Results. The intervals that were generated and the reproduced visual stimuli were shorter than the patterns. The reproduced 1- and 2-second auditory stimuli were longer than the patterns. The remaining reproduced auditory impulses were shorter than the patterns. Conclusions. In anesthetized patients, quick psychomotor reactions and the ability to time intervals are preserved 1.5 h and later after intravenous anesthesia for endoscopy.

Temporal mental qualities and selective attention
Autorzy:
Klincewicz, Michał
Opis:
This article presents an argument for the view that we can perceive temporal features without awareness. Evidence for this claim comes from recent empirical work on selective visual attention. An interpretation of selective attention as a mechanism that processes high-level perceptual features is offered and defended against one particular objection. In conclusion, time perception likely has an unconscious dimension and temporal mental. Qualities can be instantiated without ever being conscious.

Opis:
Introduction. The basic goals of the study were to analyze how patients receiving intravenous anaesthesia for endoscopy produce one-minute time intervals after anaesthesia, and to characterize the relationship between attitude towards time and the production of one-minute intervals. Material and methods. Twenty four intravenously anesthetized patients constituted the Anaesthesia Group and 25 nonanesthetized patients formed the Control Group. The Mini-Mental State Examination and the Sense of Coherence Meaningfulness Subscale were used to recognize the problem of dementia and depression, the Time Metaphors Questionnaire was used for the assessment attitudes toward time. Time production of one-minute was measured three times in each of four sessions. Results. The tested participants of both groups shortened the one-minute intervals. Duration of anaesthesia did not affect the time production. Perceiving time as empty and meaningless was related with misestimating time after colonoscopy. Conclusions. Time interpretation by using metaphors and time production are related with each other.

Rationale: Ketamine and psilocybin belong to the rapid-acting antidepressants but they also produce psychotomimetic effects including timing distortion. It is currently debatable whether these are essential for their therapeutic actions. As depressed patients report that the “time is dragging,” we hypothesized that ketamine and psilocybin-like compounds may produce an opposite effect, i.e., time underestimation, purportedly contributing to their therapeutic properties. Objectives: Timing was tested following administration of (R)- and (S)-ketamine, and psilocybin, psilocin, and norpsilocin in the discrete-trial temporal discrimination task (TDT) in male rats. Timing related to premature responses, and cognitive and unspecific effects of compounds were tested in the 5-choice serial reaction time task (5-CSRTT) in the standard 1-s, and “easier” 2-s stimulus duration conditions, as well as in the vITI variant promoting impulsive responses. Results: (S)-ketamine (15 but not 3.75 or 7.5 mg/kg) shifted psychometric curve to the right in TDT and reduced premature responses in 5-CSRTT, suggesting expected time underestimation, but it also decreased the accuracy of temporal discrimination and increased response and reward latencies, decreased correct responses, and increased incorrect responses. While (R)-ketamine did not affect timing and produced no unspecific actions, it reduced incorrect responses in TDT and increased accuracy in 5-CSRTT, suggesting pro-cognitive effects. Psilocin and psilocybin produced mainly unspecific effects in both tasks, while norpsilocin showed no effects. Conclusions: Time underestimation produced by (S)-ketamine could be associated with its antidepressant effects; however, it was accompanied with severe behavioral disruption. We also hypothesize that behavioral disruption produced by psychedelics objectively reflects their psychotomimetic-like actions.

A mechanism of synaptic clock underlying subjective time perception
Autorzy:
Jura, Bartosz
Opis:
Temporal resolution of visual information processing is thought to be an important factor in predator-prey interactions, shaped in the course of evolution by animals’ particular ecology. Here I show that light can be considered to have a dual role of a source of information, which guides motor actions, and an environmental feedback for those actions. I consequently show how temporal perception might depend on feedback based behavioral adaptations realized in the nervous system through activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. I propose an underlying mechanism of synaptic clock, with every synapse having its characteristic time unit, determined by the persistence of memory traces of synaptic inputs, which is used by the synapse to tell time, and postulate the existence of a specific brain-wide distribution of synaptic clocks with different time units. The present theory offers a simple, testable link between the fields of neurobiology of memory, time perception and ecology, which may account for numerous experimental findings, including the interspecies variation in the temporal resolution and the properties of subjective time perception in humans, specifically the variable speed of perceived time passage, depending on emotional or attentional states or tasks performed.

Tajna i krasota : o hudožestvennoj modeli vremeni v tvorčestve Aleksandra Bloka

Mystery and beauty : on artistic model of time in the works by Alexander Blok

Opis:
The main focus of interest in the paper is the isssue of time perception and conceptualization of time disclosed in the works by Aleksander Blok. According to the poet, time reveals its destructive power towards man and culture. Idea of untimely Russian reality, presented in texts written at the turn of 19th century is taken into account, as well as apocalyptic expectations, characteristic for the society of that period. The paper indicates examples of Blok’s lyrical interpretation of Nietzschean idea of eternal return. Ties between the idea of eternity and the moment, visible in Blok’s works and regarded typical for the Silver Age world view, are taken into consideration. Cultural expression of time flow and the idea of «the spirit of time» are thought to be important as far as Blok’s aesthetical concepts are concerned. Literary forms, genres and poetical devices are treated by Blok as unique cultural time markers. Beauty and artistic creativity in the texts by Blok are thought to be factors capable to withstand the destructive power of time.
