Opis:: Discourse Linguistics, an applied field of research focused on complex contentmacrostructures open to multiple transformations in functioning, currently raises such a research problem as how to cope with its multidimensional units staying focused on its holistic nature. For this integrative methodological platforms are introduced and tested. The authors, accepting discourse community representations built within the composites of the image-making discourse type as a forefront research object, introduce and verify such kind of a platform both theoretically and practically (on the discourse of respondents who represent one of currently built Belarusian discourse communities). The approaches inbuilt into the platform are Tartu-Moscow semiotic school (Lotman 2005, 205-226), French school of discourse analysis (Maingueneau 2002, 185-190), the causal-genetic approach of discourse modeling / CGA (Oukhvanova 2017, 5-16), and Swales’ approach to discourse community research (2016).

Opis:: The present article attempts to discuss whether a medical conference poster intended for a specific English-speaking discourse community shares the properties of discourse colony (Hoey 1986). The author analyses 12 e-posters, which were displayed during an international neurological conference, presenting findings on epilepsy treatment. First, the author characterises the conference poster, which is followed by a description of discourse community and discourse colony. Next, the analysis of the e-posters is carried out and the results of the analysis are presented. On the basis of these results it might be said that the medical conference poster could be considered a discourse colony as it shares some of its properties.

Opis:: This paper has as its starting point Fairclough’s observation that we can consider social life as diverse but interconnected networks of stabilized or institutionalised social activities which function by means of discourse (Fairclough 2003). Discourses include representations of how things are, have been, might, could or should be and all discourses are inherently positioned. By comparing the discourse features from the The Financial Times “Lex” column from the period 1996 to 2006, we will consider what discoursal choices have been employed in order to establish and maintain knowledge in this specialized discourse and consider whether the writer/reader relationship has changed.

Opis:: The study presents an analysis of the concluding sections of televised sports news (TSN), an aspect of a stand-alone sports news broadcast, of selected Ghanaian television stations aimed at exploring their schematic structure. The study uses the genre-based theory from the perspectives of Swales (1990) and Bhatia (1993) to analyze 50 televised sports news from Ghana Television (GTV), Metropolitan Entertainment Television (Metro TV) and TV3 Network Limited (TV3). The findings reveal that this unique genre has five rhetorical moves and the move sequence is characterized by irregular patterns. The results further reveal that the choice of words (language use) in the concluding sections of the TSN is influenced by the distinct communicative purposes of the five moves. Also, Move 4 (Creating Awareness of Impending Sporting Activities) has the largest space in the concluding sections of TSN whilst Move 5 (Well Wishes) occupies the least space. The study has implications for media and communication studies serving as a model to assist novice radio and television sports presenters by facilitating their successful acculturation into the discourse community of sports journalism. The study also has implications for the genre theory in general and sports discourse in particular.

Opis:: This paper reports on the findings of these aspects of my own semi-ethnographic study which relate to the reader-oriented view of didactic discourse and emphasize the constitutive impact of social context (and the relations of power inscribed in it) on the formation of the writer’s self. Following Halliday’s (1978, 1994) approach to “language as a form of social practice” I will argue that power relations are a central force which mediates didactic discourse and profoundly affects the way student writers construct their authorial self.

Opis:: Central Europe – a community of texts. Intertextuality as a plane of functioning and maintaining the myth of Central EuropeIn this article I examine two primary (sets of) questions:1. How, why and by whom the concept of Central Europe has been (re)constructed, (re)defined and (re)imagined within the field of literature in the course of the 20th century(?); and2. Through what transformations this concept has gone during the major social and political shifts in the region(?). In order to do so I am employing Roland Barthes’ semiological approach on myth in the analysis of the texts in which concept and the myth of Central Europe is constituted. I argue that these texts, creating the myth of Central Europe, use/adopt/resemantize texts/signs which previously functioned in other semiological systems. While the so called Habsburg Myth is its core structural element, the myth of Central Europe adopts/reinterprets even such cultural texts in relation to which it stands in ideological opposition – for example the myth of national tragedy. Referring to the concept of discourse community, introduced and developed in the linguistics and literary theory by John Swales, as well as to the concept of intertextuality, I argue that Central Europe can be approached as a community of texts within which the notion of the Central-Europeanness is (re)evaluated, (re)imagined and thus historically maintained. Europa Środkowa – wspólnota tekstów. Intertekstualność jako przestrzeń funkcjonowania i podtrzymywania mitu środkowoeuropejskiegoW niniejszym artykule zajmuję się pytaniami: jak, dlaczego i przez kogo pojęcie Europy Środkowej zostało społecznie zrekonstruowane w literaturze regionu na przestrzeni XX wieku oraz jak przybiegała jego transmisja/dystrybucja w zmieniających się kontekstach społeczno-politycznych. By odpowiedzieć na te pytania, semiologiczne podejście do mitu Rolanda Barthesa zostanie zastosowane w analizie tekstów budujących pojęcia, ale także mit Europy Środkowej. Analiza ta ma pokazać, że myślenie w kategoriach Europy Środkowej aktywizuje się w chwili dodatkowej semantyzacji znaków/tekstów istniejących już wcześniej w innych systemach semiologicznych. Podczas gdy tzw. mit habsburski jest jego podstawowym elementem strukturalnym, mit Europy Środkowej nawiązuje także do takich tekstów kultury, w stosunku do których stoi w opozycji – na przykład mit tragedii narodowej. Odwołując się do koncepcji wspólnoty dyskursywnej, wprowadzonej do językoznawstwa i teorii literatury przez Johna Swalesa, jak również do pojęcia intertekstualności, zakładam, że Europa Środkowa istnieje w postaci pewnej wspólnoty tekstów, w której pojęcie środkowoeuropejskości jest negocjowane, oceniane i wyobrażane na nowo.

Opis:: In diesem Beitrag wird im Kontext der sprachbezogenen Diskursforschung das Konzept der Diskursgemeinschaft in der digitalen Transformation diskutiert. Unter einer systemtheoretischen Deutung von Digitalisierung wird das Verständnis von 'Diskursgemeinschaft' vertieft. Diese neue Sichtweise erlaubt es, mit Hilfe von Bezügen zur Grundlagenforschung und zur angewandten Diskurslinguistik analoge und digitale Ansätze zu Diskursgemeinschaften analytisch zu trennen. Der Artikel zeigt grundlegende Unterschiede in der Modellierung des Konzepts 'Diskursgemeinschaft' auf der Basis theoretischer und methodologischer Positionen auf.
This article discusses the concept of discourse community in the context of language-related discourse research in the digital transformation. In a system-theoretical interpretation of digitalization, the understanding of 'discourse community' can become more profound. This new insight allows to analytically separate analog approaches and digital approaches to discourse communities with references to basic research and applied discourse linguistics. The article points out fundamental differences in the modeling of the concept of 'discourse community' based on theoretical and methodological positions.

Opis:: The article aims at formulating the criteria that might allow establishing the dependency between the discourses present at the public scene as well as their relation to democracy. The text consists of three parts. The first one outlines the problem to be tackled with the help of the analytical model constructed by the author. Departing from Sergiusz Kowalski’s proposition, the author presents the most important dividing lines at the Polish public scene. The second part discusses the theoretical model of civil society discourse developed by Jeffrey Alexander. The categories derived from it (apart from the codes also the notion of the discourse community and the community demarcated through discourse) are adopted in the theoretical model presented in the final part of the article. The proposed model, however, refers not only to civil discourses, but also to uncivil or even anti-civil ones.
W artykule podjęta jest próba wypracowania kryteriów, za pomocą których można ustalać relacje między dyskursami obecnymi na scenie publicznej, a także ich stosunek do demokracji. W pierwszej części zarysowany jest problem, na który odpowiedzią ma być proponowany model analityczny. Odwołując się do artykułu Sergiusza Kowalskiego ukazuję najważniejsze linie podziałów na polskiej scenie publicznej. Część druga poświęcona jest dyskusji koncepcji dyskursu społeczeństwa obywatelskiego Jeffreya Alexandra. Wyprowadzone z niej kategorie (poza kodami, także pojęcie wspólnoty dyskursywnej oraz wspólnoty wyznaczanej w dyskursie) wykorzystuję w przedstawionym w części trzeciej modelu, który w – odróżnieniu od koncepcji Alexandra – odnosi się nie tylko do dyskursów obywatelskich, ale także nieobywatelskich czy wręcz antyobywatelskich.
