Opis:
Hydrocarbon contamination in the environment poses a significant challenge, and various control methods have been explored. Soil remediation by flotation has been proposed as an effective approach. This method involves the separation of hydrophobic compounds, such as soil hydrocarbons, by introducing air into a stirred reactor containing the soil pulp designated for remediation. Experiments were conducted using a 5 L Batch flotation cell to evaluate operating conditions. These experiments focused on obtaining flotation kinetics with different organic mixtures, including fine sands measuring under 150 μm. The experimental design encompassed airflow, hydrocarbon concentration, and surfactant dosage. The research utilized a diluted pulp (3% solids) with a high organic concentration (8 and 17 g/L). Flotation kinetics were measured by developing an innovative technique based on pulp color and image processing software. This technique facilitated the tracking of concentration changes over time under Beer-Lambert's Law. Subsequently, the results were adjusted using kinetic models commonly employed in mineral flotation, including the first-order, Kelsall, and Klimpel models. This comprehensive analysis sought to elucidate the underlying phenomenology and assess the potential for industrial-scale implementation. The laboratory findings indicate the possibility of achieving recoveries of up to 87%, with a first-order kinetic constant of 0.7 (1/min). Both the gas flow rate and the addition of surfactant exert substantial influence on this constant, consistent with the observed phenomenology of this study. This study explores the integration of image analysis in flotation for hydrocarbon-contaminated soil remediation. The research aims to optimize remediation strategies by examining variables such as Beer-Lambert's law and prevalent kinetic models. The study focuses on scalable, eco-friendly decontamination methods, emphasizing enhanced process control and comprehension within soil flotation systems.

Measuring methods of objects in CT images
Opis:
The problem of object's measurement in computer tomography requires the detection of object's edges. Usually, it is performed by operator, who picks the edge's points. This fact implicates the doubts for measuring accuracy and repeatability as well as the comparison possibility with another measuring results, obtained by another operator. The paper presents the analysis of automated edge detection methods and the application proposal of the method, which detects the edges by direct lumination analysis.

Opis:
Magnetic resonance imaging study is currently the reference method for the detection and diagnosis of the central nervous system tumors. A large number of tumors, especially high-grade, has a higher water content in the cells, which results in prolongation of MRI T1 and T2 what appearance as increased signal intensity in in T2-weighted images and the reduction in T1-weighted images. MRI can be performed with administration of contrast agent, which shortens T1 and increases signal on T1-weighted sequences. This allows to identify areas of increased angiogenesis), which is the exponent of the cancer malignancy degree and its biological activity. Obtained MRI images are analyzed and evaluated by a radiologist and a clinician. Most of the time it is the "by the eye" analysis, which is based on the MRI image evaluation by the generally accepted radiological standards. However, this method is relatively inaccurate. which in turn can bring to the wrong diagnosis of the disease and implementation or even lack of implementation of appropriate treatment. More and more researches are conducted in this area, but developed methods are usually very complicated and difficult to carry out by the "layman" which is the clinician. That is why the attempt is made, to develop a simple and clear algorithm for MRI image analysis in patients with the central nervous system tumors, allowing for quick and objective evaluation of magnetic resonance imaging study.

Opis:
This paper presents the possibilities of using image processing for determining effective porosity in carbonate and terrigenous rocks. For the purpose of the research, an algorithm was created, which automatically determines the percentage of pore space, based on the analysis of video sequences registered with the use of a microscope. Up to this point stereological research used for describing rock porosity was conducted manually, which is both troublesome and time consuming. The proposed algorithm uses a series of transformation operations such as: non-context operations, contextual operations and morphological transformations. The presented algorithm was tested on video sequences of thin sections of carbonates from Buszewo and Kościan, and sandstones from Dobrzyca and Solec. The obtained results show, that the method of automatic video sequence analysis used for detection and measurement of porosity leads to satisfying results.

Opis:
The paper presents a method of determining the volume of gas bubble formation. This issue is important because of the choice of parameters in the processes of mass exchange between gas and liquid. The idea of measurement method is based on filming the formation of gas bubbles, and on this basis is made image analysis process. These papers describe the steps relevant the separation of gas bubble image and calculations of its volume. In addition a sample researches have conducted, for whom defined the uncertainty of measurement. Analysis of the results determined the boundary intervals, at which a change in the pattern forming bubbles occurs, which results in that the diameter of the bubbles formed strongly depends on the gas stream emerging from the nozzle.

Opis:
Neuroblastoma is one of the most abundant tumors in infancy and ranks the fourth place among all malignant tumors of children, after acute leukemia, tumors of central nervous system and malignant lymphomas. Histological examination of atypical cell structures is mandatory for diagnosing and forecasting of neoplasm growth .. At present, the image processing of histological specimens is made by a professional histologist manually and is based on visual perception of the histologist. Naturally, visual approach has some shortcomings. Therefore, for objective estimation of medical images, increasing diagnosis accuracy and information processing speed, the computer analysis of histological images is a current need. In this paper, the features of the digital images of histological specimens and methods for digital analysis of medical images are presented. An innovative information system for instant diagnosis of the stage of neuroblastoma based on digital images analysis of histological specimens is developed. In presented studies, a new algorithm, based on deterministic chaos of digital images of histological specimens which uses original formalized indicators (irregularity of contoured zone of diagnostic interest, its structures heterogeneity including cells, nuclei, itochondrion etc.) have been implemented.

Opis:
Structures of carburized layers after the surface saturation process in gaseous, liquid or solid medium and after subsequent heat treatment (hardening and low-temperature tempering) consist mainly of high carbon plate martensite with a certain portion of retained austenite. The presence of retained austenite (RA) in carburized layers is mostly considered as undesirable because it decreases hardness of the hardened layer and furthermore, a spontaneous conversion to a ferritic-carbide mixture of a bainitic type, accompanied by a change of properties, dimensional instability and the local increase in internal stress with the possible formation of cracks, can occur. The proportion of retained austenite is, therefore, a significant characteristics of the quality of hardened layers. This work deals with the evaluation of the volume fraction of retained austenite in carburized layers using image analysis on metallographic images.

Opis:
To face the increasing demand of quality healthcare, cutting-edge automation technology is being applied in demanding areas such as medical imaging. This paper proposes a novel approach to classification problems on datasets with sparse highly localized features. It is based on the use of a saliency map in the amplification of features. Unlike previous efforts, this approach does not use any prior information about feature localization. We present an experimental study based on the Diabetic Retinopathy classification problem, in which our method has shown to achieve an over 20%-higher accuracy in solving a two-class Diabetic Retinopathy classification problem than a naive approach based solely on residual neural networks. The dataset consists of 35,120 images of various qualities, inconsistent resolutions, and aspect ratios.
