Opis:
Acknowledging the latest renaissance of spatial and immersive media technologies and content (VR/AR), the article reconceptualizes their status as software media and cultural objects. Specifically, drawing on work of i.a. Lev Manovich, Alexander Galloway and Oliver Grau, the author argues that due to a wide range of real-time sensory cues that a VR experience delivers, it should be considered as a new type of software media interface, rather than a multisensory projection. The argument is based on case study research on commercially available software applications that strive for converting computer-generated spatial immersive environments into working environments. Consumer-oriented software was selected as the object of study due to its exposure. Consequently, its popularity based i.a. on low entry barrier, leads to a greater social and cultural impact than in-house, corporate VR software or immersive new media arts projects do.  The study focuses particularly on design principles implemented to create a virtual working environment and on interaction methods used as HCI paradigms for managing the data and navigating the environment. In order to achieve a certain level of familiarity and support for legacy data and media, the aesthetics of VR working environments is based i.a. on spatial remediations of established GUI elements and visual skeuomorphism. The analysis shows that VR as a relatively new medium, particularly in non-gaming applications, faces challenges in the area of pre-VR content representation, on one hand, and in taking advantages of the affordances offered by a spatial environment (particularly at the interaction and level), from the other. Theoretically, the study follows software and platform studies approaches, informed by critical theory and media studies perspectives.

Opis:
In the relativistic world of the 21st century, if the Bauhaus would still be upheld as doctrine, we must face the truth: it can hardly be considered a provocation. Rather, we most often find ourselves caught between contradictory wishes to preserve an intact past and to make sense of a resolute avant-gardism. This paper proposes that the Bauhaus, as a discursive knowledge body, be structuralistically analyzed with Foucauldian Discourse Analysis. Our claim is substantiated by: first, that a F oucaultian concept of discourse offers an alternative to the practice of history and theory; second, that the publication of Bauhaus reveals a discursive structure in a F oucaultian sense; third, that discourse-analysis-search-engine can perform the analysis on the Bauhaus corpus, contributing to emergent epistemological positions; fourth, that this revealed structure of discourse could be mapped and re-materialized to invite interferences on today’s territory of Bauhaus Discourse. The research and development process in the accompanying project “Bauhaus Orbits – scenographic apparatus for discourse analysis” (bauhausorbits.de) will be discussed.

Opis:
"Nuclear Gandhi" is a surprising and controversial image of an Indian leader - Mahatma Gandhi. Often portrayed against the backdrop of nuclear explosions, his poses and styles clearly are suggesting awe and admiration for the ongoing mass destruction. This image is related to Sid Meier’s Civilization VI – one of the most influential video games in the history of gaming. The aim of the article is to analyse this particular case study and consider processes from many different angles that led to the emergence of this controversial phenomenon. To do so, the notion of archiverse is introduced - an assemblage (after Jane Bennett) of all cultural, political, economic and technological archives performed by the user. By following the connections between different, often seemingly distant data and contexts, it is possible to propose an archive-centric perspective on video game study.

Ten obraz jest związany z Sid Meier’s Civilization VI - jedną z najbardziej wpływowych gier wideo w historii elektronicznej rozgrywki. Celem artykułu jest analiza tego case study i przyjrzenie się z wielu różnych perspektyw procesów , które doprowadziły do powstania tego kontrowersyjnego zjawiska. W tym celu wprowadzone zostało pojęcie archiwersum - asamblażu (za Jane Bennett) wszystkich archiwów kulturowych, politycznych, ekonomicznych i technologicznych performowanych przez użytkownika. Poprzez śledzenie powiązań między różnymi, często pozornie odległymi danymi i kontekstami w ramach archiwersum proponowana jest nowa - archicentryczna - perspektywa na badanie gier wideo.

Opis:
The objective of the article is to present the most important conclusions resulting from the carried out empirical studies on the impact of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) on activities of Polish enterprises. These studies aim at filling up the gap concerning lack of analyses of potential and real possibilities to use FOSS in the economic practice, including private enterprises. The general conclusion from the carried out studies is as follows: despite the fact that FOSS is used by Polish enterprises relatively broadly, only few of them are aware of the fact that they deal just with this type of software. The use of Free and Open Source Software affects improvement of efficacy of functioning of all groups of economic entities singled out by the number of employees, first of all such, in which there is operating a separated IT unit and there takes place a broad use of computers in the production and managerial processes.
Celem rozważań jest przedstawienie najważniejszych wniosków wynikających z przeprowadzonych badań empirycznych nad wpływem Wolnego i Otwartego Oprogramowania (WOO) na działalność polskich przedsiębiorstw. Badania te starają się wypełnić lukę dotyczącą braku analiz potencjalnych i realnych możliwości wykorzystania WOO w praktyce gospodarczej, w tym w prywatnych przedsiębiorstwach. Generalna konkluzja z przeprowadzonych badań brzmi następująco: mimo że WOO jest wykorzystywane przez polskie przedsiębiorstwa stosunkowo szeroko, to tylko nieliczne z nich zdają sobie sprawę z tego, że mają do czynienia właśnie z tego typu oprogramowaniem. Stosowanie Wolnego i Otwartego Oprogramowania wpływa na poprawę sprawności funkcjonowania wszystkich grup podmiotów gospodarczych wyodrębnionych ze względu na liczbę pracujących, przede wszystkim takich, w których funkcjonuje wyodrębniona komórka IT oraz ma miejsce szerokie wykorzystanie komputerów w procesach produkcyjnych i zarządczych.
Цель статьи – представить основные выводы, вытекающие из проведенных эмпирических исследований по влиянию свободного и открытого программного обеспечения (СОПО) на деятельность польских предприятий. Эти исследования страются заполнить брешь, связанную с нехваткой анализов, касающихся потенциальных и реальных возможностей использования СОПО в экономической практике, в том числе на частных предприятиях. Общий вывод из проведенных исследований следующий: несмотря на то, что СОПО используется польскими предприятиями относительно широко, лишь немногочисленные из них отдают себе отчет в том, что они имеют дело именно с такого рода программным обеспечением. Применение свободного и открытого программного обеспечения влияет на улучшение четкости функционирования всех групп экономических субъектов, выделенных по числу занятых, прежде всего таких, в ко- торых действует выделенная информатическая единица и имеет место широкое использование компьютеров в производственных и управленческих процессах.

Opis:
Software development encompasses various factors beyond technical considerations. Neglecting non-technical elements like individuals, processes, culture, and social and organizational aspects can lead to debt-like characteristics that demand attention. Therefore, we introduce the non-technical debt (NTD) concept to encompass and explore these aspects. This indicates the applicability of the debt analogy to non-technical facets of software development. Technical debt (TD) and NTD share similarities and often arise from risky decision-making processes, impacting both software development professionals and software quality. Overlooking either type of debt can lead to significant implications for software development success. The current study conducts a comprehensive multivocal literature review (MLR) to explore the most recent research on NTD, its causes, and potential mitigation strategies. For analysis, we carefully selected 40 primary studies among 110 records published until October 1, 2022. The study investigates the factors contributing to the accumulation of NTD in software development and proposes strategies to alleviate the adverse effects associated with it. This MLR offers a contemporary overview and identifies prospects for further investigation, making a valuable contribution to the field. The findings of this research highlight that NTD’s impacts extend beyond monetary aspects, setting it apart from TD. Furthermore, the findings reveal that rectifying NTD is more challenging than addressing TD, and its consequences contribute to the accumulation of TD. To avert software project failures, a comprehensive approach that addresses NTD and TD concurrently is crucial. Effective communication and coordination play a vital role in mitigating NTD, and the study proposes utilizing the 3C model as a recommended framework to tackle NTD concerns.

Background: Game scenario is an important factor for achieving player enjoyment; consisting a key business success factor. Additionally, the production of early design artifacts is crucial for the success of the development process. However, representing scenarios is a non-trivial task: (a) multiple aspects of the game need to be visualized; and (b) there is a plethora of representation approaches, out of which the game designer needs to select from. Aim: The goal of this work is to provide a panorama of the current scenario representation approaches, to aid game engineers in selecting the most fitting scenario representation approach and understand the existing designing options. Method: We have performed a Systematic Mapping Study, using 4 digital libraries, since the main goal can be achieved through study classification. By following an established search and filtering process, we have identified 717 articles, and analyzed in detail 95. Results: Diagrams are the most common generic approach to represent scenario; Game story is the most usual part of the scenario being represented; Characters are the most common component; and Transitions are the most usual connectors. Conclusion: Researchers may get useful information for empirically investigating several game engineering aspects; whereas game engineers can efficiently select the most fitting approach.

Search based techniques have been widely applied in the domain of software testing. This Systematic Literature Review aims to present the research carried out in the field of search based approaches applied particularly to mutation testing. During the course of literature review, renowned databases were searched for the relevant publications in the field to include relevant studies up to the year 2014. Few studies for the year 2015-16, gathered by performing snowball search, have also been included. For reviewing the literature in the field, 43 studies were evaluated, out of which 18 studies were thoroughly studied and analysed. The result of this SLR shows that search based techniques were applied to mutation testing primarily for two purposes, either for mutant optimisation or for test case optimisation. The future directions of this SLR suggests the application of search based techniques for other issues related to mutation testing, like, solution to equivalents mutants, generation of non-trivial mutants, multi-objective test data generation and non-functional testing.

Background: Software product maintainability prediction (SPMP) is an important task to control software maintenance activity, and many SPMP techniques for improving software maintainability have been proposed. In this study, we performed a systematic mapping and review on SPMP studies to analyze and summarize the empirical evidence on the prediction accuracy of SPMP techniques in current research. Objective: The objective of this study is twofold: (1) to classify SPMP studies reported in the literature using the following criteria: publication year, publication source, research type, empirical approach, software application type, datasets, independent variables used as predictors, dependent variables (e.g. how maintainability is expressed in terms of the variable to be predicted), tools used to gather the predictors, the successful predictors and SPMP techniques, (2) to analyze these studies from three perspectives: prediction accuracy, techniques reported to be superior in comparative studies and accuracy comparison of these techniques. Methodology: We performed a systematic mapping and review of the SPMP empirical studies published from 2000 up to 2018 based on an automated search of nine electronic databases. Results: We identified 82 primary studies and classified them according to the above criteria. The mapping study revealed that most studies were solution proposals using a history-based empirical evaluation approach, the datasets most used were historical using object-oriented software applications, maintainability in terms of the independent variable to be predicted was most frequently expressed in terms of the number of changes made to the source code, maintainability predictors most used were those provided by Chidamber and Kemerer (C&K), Li and Henry (L&H) and source code size measures, while the most used techniques were ML techniques, in particular artificial neural networks. Detailed analysis revealed that fuzzy & neuro fuzzy (FNF), artificial neural network (ANN) showed good prediction for the change topic, while multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), and group method of data handling (GMDH) techniques presented greater accuracy prediction in comparative studies. Based on our findings SPMP is still limited. Developing more accurate techniques may facilitate their use in industry and well-formed, generalizable results be obtained. We also provide guidelines for improving the maintainability of software.

The purpose of the paper is to present the organisation and results of the empirical research facilitating the localisation and acquisition of knowledge in software developing organisations which have designed, documented, implemented and maintain quality management systems.The author’s interest is focused on presenting a project of empirical research aimed at the localisation and acquisition of knowledge in software developing organisations. The paper contains an assessment of the usability of the previously proposed model of transition from quality management systems to knowledge management systems in software developing organisations for the purpose of establishing KMS elements (solely for knowledge localisation and acquisition processes). The assessment of usability is made in relation to quality management systems conformable with the ISO 9001:2000 supplemented by ISO/ IEC 90003:2004.
