Opis:
The problem of determination of lateral earth pressure of the soft soil on piles related to the safe design of construction founded on deep piles is presented in the paper. The examples of lateral earth pressure acting against piles are described, as well as properties and response of non-cohesive, cohesive and organic soils forming a soft layer subjected to unsymmetrical loading. Current approaches related to the determination of lateral earth pressure loading the piles are shown. The influence of consolidation on the change of soil strength parameters is presented as well as the application of own model and laboratory test results to the Winter-Leinekugel proposal of earth pressure calculation. Many years research have been carried out in cooperation with Prof. Helmut Mei\ssner from Kaiserslautern University, Germany under the common project entitled "The lateral earth pressure of soft soil acting against piles" as well as in the frame of grants of Polish Research Council.

Opis:
This article highlights historical data regarding truffles' occurrence in Poland. Along with the soil parameters the plant communities at the sites were studied. The results of the chemical soil analyses showed that the soil water pH at 5 sites was acidic (from 4.3 to 6.1), and only in one, Wiązowna, was the pH (7.2) conductive to truffle development. Similarly, the content of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in soil samples was low (from 0 to 0.03 %), except for Wiązowna, where CaCO3 was 0.12 %. Among the 24 reported species of trees and shrubs, 7 species were host-plants of summer truffle (Tuber aestivum Vitt.). Out of these 7 species, oak and hornbeam were present at four locations. Across the sites, 31 species of ground-layer plants were identified. Among these, Epipactis helleborine was only one host-species of summer truffle. Our findings indicate that the formation of truffle fruiting-bodies depends on specific habitat characteristics. The key factors determining this process are soil parameters, such as: texture, pH and calcium content. Our inventory showed that the sites we studied still persist as natural stands, although only one of them seems to be favorable for truffle development: this site is located in Wiązowna, where soil is of pH 7.2 and E. helleborine (host species for truffles from Orchidaceae) is found, fulfills the environmental requirements of truffles

Opis:
In the soil environment, there are many enzymeswhose origin is related to microorganisms. Enzymes participatein the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, they are also elementsof the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles. They alsoplay a role in less known cycles, such as the sulphur cycle orcellulose decomposition. Determination of soil enzymes activityis very popular in microbiology, biochemistry and agriculturalsciences. Their activity may be a measure of soil fertility. Thepresent report describes the importance of selected soil enzymesand the methods of their determination. However, it is importantto remember that a single enzyme cannot be an indicator of theenvironment. The enzymatic activity is sensitive to many naturaland anthropogenic factors affecting soil microorganisms. Onlycomprehensive researchers on the activity of many, different enzymescan provide reliable information on the state of the soilenvironment.

Opis:
The paper presents a brownfield site investigation of the area where lignite was formerly exploited with an underground mining method. The Miocene lignite seams were folded by glaciers and covered with a layer of highly compacted sediments with sands on top. Yet eighty years after the extraction ceased, new sinkholes still develop. The aim of this work is to determine both the mechanical parameters of soil in the area of sinkholes and the changes in the values of these parameters induced by the process of sinkhole formation. The applied methodology involves in-situ investigations. Soil state and strength parameters were examined with the use of CPTU and DPL tests, while stiffness parameters were determined in the SDMT test. The evaluated parameters of soil may provide data for numerical modelling of the process of sinkhole formation and may significantly simplify future in-situ investigations in the area where the soil profile shows high natural changeability of state. The knowledge of values of parameters in a sinkhole and outside it enables easier differentiation between the zones of undisturbed soil and zones where sinkholes formed in the past (and were then backfilled) or where the sinkhole formation process is currently in progress.

Opis:
The article presents a method of calibration of material parameters of a numerical model based on a genetic algorithm, which allows to match the calculation results with measurements from the geotechnical monitoring network. This method can be used for the maintenance of objects managed by the observation method, which requires continuous monitoring and design alterations. The correctness of the calibration method has been verified on the basis of artificially generated data in order to eliminate inaccuracies related to approximations resulting from the numerical model generation. Using the example of the tailing dam model the quality of prediction of the selected measurement points was verified. Moreover, changes of factor of safety values, which is an important indicator for designing this type of construction, were analyzed. It was decided to exploit the case of dam of reservoir, which is under continuous construction, that is dam height is increasing constantly, because in this situation the use of the observation method is relevant.

Opis:
The mobility of a planetary vehicle has numerous constraints imposed by the types of terrain. Navigation is difficult through uneven and rocky terrain, and becomes worse due to abrupt changes of ground level which may cause a fall to a lower ground level. This article examines the effect of the soil’s parameters change due to repetitive falls on the vehicle’s dynamic behavior. After each free fall of the vehicle there is a collision of the vehicle’s wheel with the ground. If the ground is made up of soft soil there is an increase in the soil compactness after each collision. The increase in the soil compactness causes a change in the soil parameters. These changes modify the algorithm’s parameters of the vehicle’s dynamic model. The dynamic model is a quarter vehicle model with single rigid wheel which falls on soft soil. Simplified forms of the Pressure-Sinkage models of Bekker and Reece for the sinkage of a rigid body into soft soil are incorporated in the numerical solution of the governing equations of motion. The dynamic interaction of a rigid wheel and soft soil has three stages: sinkage stage, wheel dwell stage, and wheel pullout from soil stage. By comparing the simulations results when the soil’s parameters are kept constant and when their changes are incorporated in the dynamic model showed that the difference in the dynamic response are not significant and can be neglected. There is a gradual change in the dynamic mechanical quantities when the soil’s parameters are kept constant, while the changes in the dynamic mechanical quantities between the second fall and the successive falls are small.

We analysed changes in soil chemical properties (pH, C:N, N, P, K, Ca, Na) inside two forest areas chosen for renewal (Lubartów A and B) and within one post-agricultural site (Świerczyna) designated for afforestation with Scots pine. The experimental plots were located in areas known as persistent cockchafer grub spots. The Lubartów A site was not fenced and showed signs of wild boar activity. Analyses were carried out in the autumn of 2011 and spring 2012, prior to pine sawdust application to the soil and before tree planting, respectively, and again one year later in May 2013. Precipitation as well as air and soil temperatures were recorded throughout the experimental period. We found that soil temperature and humidity, determined by changes in weather, differences in soil chemical properties between forest and agricultural sites as well as sawdust treatments differentially affected soil reaction, C : N ratios and nutrient content. In the unfenced area (Lubartów A), the content of nutrient forms available to plants decreased no more under sawdust treatment than under control conditions. In the remaining areas, sawdust treatment caused an increase or no change in soil concentrations of the investigated nutrients. Under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, sawdust can represent a significant source of energy-rich compounds promoting diversified edaphone activity, which appears to be the main reason for changes in soil nutrient content.

Opis:
The compaction/liquefaction characteristics of two model sands are determined experimentally. One sand (Istanbul) is used in shaking table investigations, and the other (Dundee) in geotechnical centrifuge experiments. Both types of these highly sophisticated experiments are planned to be applied to test theories of seabed liquefaction. The first step of these experiments is to determine the parameters of model soils, which is the main goal of this paper.
