Opis:
The global objective of this research was determining the relations between anthropometric variables with success in judo bout. The research was conducted on a sample of 122 subjects. The sample of variables consisted of 18 anthropometric measures, out of which three latent dimensions were isolated by the use of factor analysis. Three latent dimensions (factors) represent a set of predictive variables. Criterion is defined as a success in judo bout and it is represented by two criteria variables; number of wins and technical efficiency in judo bout. To test the relations of latent anthropometric variables with success in the bout the regression analysis was used. Statistically significant but low connections were found between anthropometric variables and the two criteria. As only the factor volume and mass of the body partially contribute to the explanation of criteria, one can conclude that the active muscle mass is in the background of achieved connection.

Opis:
In the current literature, many different stochastic extensions of the DEA framework can be found. Such generalized approaches enable one to model the uncertainty inherent to the form of the production possibility set and the value of the technical efficiency measure at any given point of the former. In the paper we provide a detailed discussion of some statistical model and the subsampling algorithm which are used in statistical inference. The methodology is then illustrated with an empirical example using the real-world data from the Polish energy sector.

Opis:
Artificial Insemination (AI) in poultry production is a veritable technique in solving the problem of breeding and meeting the increasing demand. This study assesses the economics of artificial insemination in broiler production among sixty randomly selected broiler farmers in Nigeria. The analytical techniques employed include descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis, and stochastic frontier.  The result discovered that most of the farmers are male and are at their prime age. Majority of the livestock farmers have some form of formal education and a minimum of 5 (five) year experience in poultry farming. The capital was mostly sourced from the bank. Majority of the farmers has a stock size of more than 25,000 birds. They have a gross margin of N341, 933,406. Only 20% of gross income was used for operating expenses with a return on capital invested of 4.3. The mean technical efficiency was 80.70%. Feed, vaccine and stock size were statistically significant in determining efficiency while education and extension visits are the statistically significant variable influencing technical inefficiency. It is therefore recommended that affordable and accessible input, as well as training should be made available to farmers to achieve self-sufficiency and improve the economy.

Opis:
The growth and development of the agricultural sector in developing countries is largely dependent on technological enhancements, because merely expanding the area of farm cultivation is no longer sufficient to meet the increasing food needs of growing populations. This study examined the effects of risk attitudes on the technical efficiency of small-holder rice farmers in Ogun State, Nigeria. Primary data were collected for the study using a multi-stage sampling technique, and 180 rice farmers were selected from the study area. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, stochastic frontier analysis and a simple lottery-choice experiment. The findings revealed that 36.1% of the farmers were between the ages of 31 and 40. Farmers who were 41 years and over were seen to be more risk averse than their younger counterparts. In this age group, 76.66% of rice farmers were risk averse, while 23.34% were risk tolerant. The result of the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) of the parameters of the stochastic frontier analysis revealed that farm size positively and significantly influenced rice output (β = 0.16, p < 0.1), as did quantity of seed (β = 0.74, p < 0.01) and use of chemicals (β = 0.26, p < 0.01). Years of farming had a negative effect on technical efficiency (β = 0.64, p < 0.01), as did severe risk aversion (β = 0.57, p < 0.1). The study concludes that small-holder farmers are generally risk averse, negatively influencing technical efficiency in the study area. The study recommends that the design of government programs should incorporate farmers’ risk attitudes as an important variable.

Opis:
Aim: This study aims to evaluate the technical efficiency of 44 Brazilian port terminals that handled containers in 2016. The evaluation will first proceed by identifying the main benchmarks. It will then provide an analysis of variables that may have an effect on technical efficiency as well as the nature of their relationship with the latter--namely: container movement and specialized terminals.   Design / Research methods: In this work we apply the techniques of Data Envelopment Analysis and Free Disposal Hull. Output-oriented models were constructed, using three inputs - berth depth, berth length and number of berths, and three outputs - number of containers handled, medium board measured in container handled per hour of mooring, and medium consignment rate measured in container throughput per ship.   Conclusions / findings: The main results show that half of the terminals have an inefficient infrastructure, with capacity larger than necessary to meet current demand for transportation of containers. In addition, there is a strong relationship between the efficiency and size of a terminal port and between the efficiency and degree of specialization. Moreover, the private use terminal of (TUP) Itacal and public quay OCRIM can serve as benchmarks for most of the terminals.   Originality / value of the article: Relatively few works in the literature tried to measure technical efficiency for developing countries. Besides that, none of the works found regarding Brazilian ports have shown the scenario after promulgation of the Port’s Law in 2013, and only a few used container cargo as focus. This article is of interest for scientists of the sector, exporters/importers, and Brazilian Government officers interested in observing the effects of public policies aimed at the sector. We also suggest future work concerning the sector's improvements which can follow from our findings.

Opis:
This paper analysed the economic efficiency of small-scale tomato farmers in the Greater Letaba municipality of South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Primary data were collected from 68 tomato farmers based on structured questionnaires and using convenience and purposive sampling procedures. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used to analyse the level of economic efficiency. The study utilised the output approach, where the output achieved by the farmers is compared to the maximum output attainable using the given inputs. The empirical results reveal that mean technical, allocative, and economic efficiency levels are at 0.95, 0.41 and 0.39, respectively. The study also found that land (farm size), seedlings, labour, pesticides and water have a positively significant relationship with the production of tomatoes in the study area. Therefore, it is recommended that the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development provide farmers with enough extension services by employing more extension personnel. Government programmes such as the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme should be intensified – through the pillar of training and capacity building – to reach the small-scale farmers in the municipality, whereby farmers should be provided with training on the recommended minimum and maximum application of inputs like pesticides, fertilisers, seedlings and water in tomato production.

Opis:
This paper assessed the trend of productivity of the existing six Nigerian ports. Secondary data was extracted from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Annual Reports, Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) Annual Reports, and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Annual reports. Using the Data Envelopment Analysis technique, it was discovered that Calabar Port had been under-utilized towards the achievement of the required results. On the contrary, Rivers Port requires technical touches in her operations. As a liquid bulk port, the time of loading and discharging of commodities are often more than any other type of port and the turnaround time at this port are often more. Scale optimization is also required in Rivers Port. Inferentially, Lagos Port has been operating on optimal scale size but fluctuating managerial efficiency was experienced in the operation years. As a matter of findings, Tin Can Island has a similar trend to that of Onne Port with low productivities in the pre-concession period which improved consistently in the post-concession year of 2010 till the year 2015. It was also observed that Tin Can Island Port operated on under-utilization of inputs resources in the pre-concession periods till the post-concession year 2010. This reflects the element of wastefulness concerning both inputs and outputs quantities. Delta Port experienced fluctuating scale and technical efficiency trends in both pre and post concession years. Hence, it is observed that productivities' trends vary among the concessioned Nigerian Ports. These could be as a result of the influence of varied exogenous and endogenous factors on individual Port.

Opis:
Research background: EU National Rural Development Programs (RDPs) support food chain organization, including the establishment of agricultural producer organizations (APOs) to assist the cooperation among small- and medium-sized farms and improve their performance. Purpose of the article: We assessed how membership in an APO affects technical efficiency in a sample of Slovak farms. We break down our results by the type of membership (non-members, long-term members, and members of newly established APOs, benefitting from the RDP support) and production specialization of farms (crops, livestock, unspecialized). We expected a positive effect of membership on farm performance, although with differences by production specialization. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data of 645 farms in Slovakia in 2014, when the 2007?2013 RDP support was over. We applied a DEA-based two-stage metafrontier approach. During the first stage, we estimated group-specific efficiency and calculated adjusted (target) values of inputs, given the outputs. During the second stage, we estimated the meta-technical efficiency of farms relative to the metafrontier derived from pooled adjusted inputs and outputs of farm groups by their membership within production specialization. The meta-efficiency indicates farm efficiency associated with membership in a producer organization. We examined the differences between meta-efficiency by membership groups by the Kruskal-Wallis and post hoc Dunn?s tests. Findings & Value added: Members of APOs were mainly large farms. Membership in newly established APOs, benefitting from of the RDP support, contributed significantly to higher technical efficiency of livestock and crop farms. Their performance was, however, affected by managerial and scale inefficiencies. Well-performing farms with good farm management had joined APOs already before the year 2007. However, the long-term APO membership did not improve farm technical efficiency significantly. Public support of farm cooperation should be designed to improve the governance, sustainability of the APO activities, and performance of their members.

Opis:
This study defined sustainable technical efficiency from a set of efficiency indices generated from the maximum likelihood estimation of the stochastic production functions fitted on data collected from waterleaf farms in the Uyo agricultural zone of Akwa Ibom State, southern Nigeria. A multi-stage random sampling method was employed to choose two hundred respondents. A structured questionnaire was administered to the respondents to obtain the necessary data for the study. The empirical results revealed an average technical efficiency of 52.23% while the sustainable technical efficiency averaged 87.77% among waterleaf farmers in the zone. Determinants of Sustainable technical efficiency were identified using the Logit and Tobit models. The results of the two models were consistent and in line with the inefficiency model. Findings revealed that farmers’ age, number of female farmers, household size, farm size, farming experience, access to extension services, membership in social organization, land ownership status and non-farm income earned by farmers positively affected the sustainable technical efficiency of waterleaf farmers in the zone. On the other hand, farmers’ education, farming experience, cost of labour and value of post-harvest losses negatively affected sustainable technical efficiency. To achieve sustainable technical efficiency in waterleaf production, it is recommended that membership in social organizations should be intensified among waterleaf farmers. Also, land development is critical for the sustainability of waterleaf production in the zone. In addition, female beneficiaries should be the major target of any government intervention in waterleaf production. Training-based on-farm demonstrations, focus group discussion, advocacy and talks are preferred instead of a curriculum or formal education for waterleaf farmers in the State.
