The autumn of 2015 marked the 12th anniversary of the death of Stefania Kossowska, a Polish public space journalist in exile in London. Born in Lvov in 1909, educated in Warsaw and abroad, she was a great erudite, fond of reading and writing. Her creative accomplishments as well as literary, journalistic and organizational activities made the foundation of the cultural life of Polish diaspora abroad. She belonged to the "invincible" generation formed in the interwar period. Stefania Kossowska gained her journalistic skills working with the editorial board of "Ivy", "ABC", "Warsaw Evening" and "Straight in the Eyes". She was a collaborator with the Polish émigré magazines in the UK: M. Grydzewski's "News" (editor-in-chief in the years 1974 to 1981), "General Overview", "White Eagle", "Pulse", "Literary Memoirs," "Polish Diary and Soldier's Diary" and its addendum - "Polish Week", and Parisian "Culture". The author, among others, of such books as: I live in London, From Herbert to Herbert. The "News" Award 1958-1990, I write you as I see you, Ancestors Gallery and Friends and acquaintances. She was a permanent collaborator with the Radio Free Europe. In 1994 she handed over the "News" archive to the University Library in Torun.

Opis:
The appearance of twin/stacking faults in nanoparticles creates strains affecting the catalytic, optical, and electrical properties of nanomaterials. Currently, there is a lack of experimental tools for a numeric characterization of these defects in samples. Therefore, many structure–property correlations are poorly understood. Here, we report the exploration of the twinning effect on the XRD pattern and its practical application. We developed a new approach focused on the special mutual orientation of periodic fcc seg- ments, domains. Using computational simulations, we found that the more domains, the smaller the height ratio of 220 to 111 diffraction peaks. Knowing this correlation, we performed the XRD bulk mor- phology and size analysis of Au and AuPt samples. The obtained results were compared with the results of TEM and SAXS analyses. In a broader context, our multidomain XRD method is a simple alternative to TEM which enables unraveling the structure–property correlations in NP studies.

Opis:
The essential oil of Syzygium (S.) aromaticum (CEO) is known for its good biological activity. The aim of the research was to evaluate in vitro and in situ antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of the essential oil produced in Slovakia. The main components of CEO were eugenol 82.4% and (E)-caryophyllene 14.0%. The antimicrobial activity was either weak or very strong with inhibition zones ranging from 4.67 to 15.78 mm in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and from 8.22 to 18.56 mm in yeasts and fungi. Among the tested bacteria and fungi, the lowest values of MIC were determined for Staphylococcus (S.) aureus and Penicillium (P.) expansum, respectively. The vapor phase of CEO inhibited the growth of the microscopic filamentous fungi of the genus Penicillium when tested in situ on bread. The strongest effect of mycelia inhibition in a bread model was observed against P. expansum at concentrations of 250 and 500 μL/mL. The best antimicrobial activity of CEO in the carrot model was found against P. chrysosenum. Differences between the mass spectra of Bacillus (B.) subtilis biofilms on the tested surfaces (wood, glass) and the control sample were noted from the seventh day of culture. There were some changes in mass spectra of Stenotrophomonas (S.) maltophilia, which were observed in both experimental groups from the fifth day of culture. These findings confirmed the impact of CEO on the protein structure of older biofilms. The findings indicate that, besides being safe and sensorially attractive, S. aromaticum has antimicrobial activity, which makes it a potential substitute for chemical food preservatives.

The article discusses the problem of women’s military service in the history of Poland. The first part of the article is dedicated to women involved in national uprisings (1794, 1830, 1861). It presents the silhouettes of women taking part in fights or medical and logistical services. The second part focuses on the participation of women in World War I. The article provides a description of the first regular women’s military organization. The next part of the article consists of an analysis of women's contributions to the nation's defense either on the fronts in the war or in the country. It shows how many women were involved in fights or supported the Polish Army.

Ocean Physicochemistry versus Climate Change
Autorzy:
Góralski, Bogdan
Opis:
It is the dwindling ocean productivity which leaves dissolved carbon dioxide in the seawater. Its solubility is diminished by the rise in ocean water temperature (by one degree Celsius since 1910, according to IPCC). Excess carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere, while its growing concentration in seawater leads to ocean acidification.
Ocean acidification leading to lowering pH of surface ocean water remains an unsolved problem of science. My today’s lecture will mark an attempt at proving that this is a regular phenomenon in the ocean history linked to changes in the Earth’s climate.

Opis:
The topic of Polish diaspora in Japan, a community with which Poles in Japan identify as Poles, recognize Polish heritage and connection to what it means to be Polish is one of important, but practically unresearched issues in Poland-Japan relations. From the 1970s a growth in Polish population in Japan can be observed. They began to organize meetings, establish formal and less official groups and have helped and maintained connections to Poland. This paper will focus on the post-war history of Polish diaspora in Japanese islands.

Opis:
One of the assumptions of this article is the proposition that there is no turning back from tools such as electronic registers in schools, given current social and technological determinants, organisational, technical and humanistic aspects as well as the necessity to improve the quality of school management and educational processes. The article discusses selected results of a study into the functioning of the e-register as an electronic system designed to support management processes and to improve record-keeping of the educational process at educational establishments. The study was conducted among head teachers, teachers, students from selected schools in the Silesian province as well as their parents. The article comprises a discussion of theoretical issues, literature research, a review of software available in the market, and a statement of the objectives, the subject and results of empirical research. Keywords: e-services in education, electronic registers in school, management software, survey
