In order to improve the efficiency and accuracy of predicting the thermal and moisture comfort of skin-tight clothing (also called skin-tight underwear), principal component analysis(PCA) is used to reduce the dimensions of related variables and eliminate the multicollinearity relationship among variables. Then, the optimized variables are used as the input parameters of the coupled intelligent model of the genetic algorithm (GA) and back propagation (BP) neural network, and the thermal and moisture comfort of different tights (tight tops and tight trousers) under different sports conditions is analysed. At the same time, in order to verify the superiority of the genetic algorithm and BP neural network intelligent model, the prediction results of GA-BP, PCA-BP and BP are compared with this model. The results show that principal component analysis (PCA) improves the accuracy and adaptability of the GA-BP neural network in predicting thermal and humidity comfort. The forecasting effect of the PCA-GA-BP neural network is obviously better than that of the GA-BP, PCA-BP, BP model, which can accurately predict the thermal and moisture comfort of tight-fitting sportswear. The model has better forecasting accuracy and a simpler structure.

Opis:: The implementation of economic analysis into innovation management can be difficult to execute. This difficulty means that innovation will result in results different from those expected. The main purpose of this article is to show the applicability of recognized and widely used economic analysis tools for all aspects of investment in innovation. This article will also suggest a structure for implementing this type of investment evaluation analysis. The method of analysis and logical construction will be applied, and the considerations will be based on the key components of investment in innovation in the area of information systems.

Opis:: Background: This proof of principle study aims to investigate the applicability of finite element analysis (FEA) in Oral and Maxillofacial (OMF) surgery, by studying the effect of mandibular body height and osteosynthesis positioning on unilateral mandibular body fractures based on Champy’s technique. Material and methods: Mandibles made of polyurethane foam (Synbone®), with heights of 18, 14, and 10 mm were used to create a FEA model with a unilateral straight-line fracture, fixated with a standard commercially available 6-hole 2 mm titanium miniplate. Two different FEA programs were used for the comparison, namely: Solidworks and Comsol Multiphysics. The FEA outcomes were compared with a series of mechanical tests with polymeric models fixed in a customised device and loaded onto a mechanical test bench. Results: First, the study illustrated that the optimal plate position appeared to be the upper border. Second, lower mandibular height increases instability and requires a stronger osteosynthesis system. Conclusions: FEA’s and polymeric model testing outcomes of unilateral non-comminuted fractures were highly comparable with current opinions of mandibular fracture management. The promising outcome of this study makes it worthwhile to do more extensive analysis in order to determine whether FEA alone is sufficient for optimisation of fracture management.

Opis:: Systems analysis and design (SAND) is an information systems (IS) course that is taught around the world in most higher education management of information systems (MIS) programmes. However, the theoretical nature of this type of course presents challenges for instructors as they devise instructional strategies to convey the abstract concepts that are necessary for their students to understand, such as, how to draw data flow diagrams (DFD) to correctly represent the informational specifications of an IS. Evidence suggests that one of the factors of the low success rates of many IS-design projects in the workforce is due to the graduate recruits’ failure to acquire basic SAND knowledge. While a considerable amount of literature focused on integrating technology into the teaching practices to facilitate the knowledge acquisition, a few investigated its effectiveness to fulfil this particular purpose. This paper reflects on such challenges and proposes an evaluation approach to assess the effectiveness of technology integration in teaching an IS course like SAND. The empirical interpretations represented in this paper are gathered through a series of quasi-experimental 2x3 factorial experiments that were conducted at four higher education institutions and based on the Rasch item response theory and measurement analysis. The preliminary analysis from this study provides reliable evidence to delineate key instructional strategies when designing higher education IS courses.

Opis:: Ontologic structures in a socio-political editorial — a socio-cognitive approach The aim of the present study is to analyze the conceptualization of ontological structures in a special type of journalistic writing represented by a socio-political editorial. According to the socio-cognitive approach (Goffman, 1991; Langacker 1986), the author discusses the problem of discursive mechanisms related to the persuasive function of language and classification. Therefore, in ba- sis of the gathered linguistic corpus, which constitutes of forty French editorials, treating about university and public service pension reforms, culled from the web pages of different journals and magazines (2007–2008), the author intends to de- scribe the distribution of two semantic roles such as agent and patient (by means of the synthetic scheme presented in this paper) in the context of the persuasiveness of media communication. The way of constructing the semantic roles of partici- pants both influences and modifies the readers’ opinions and their perception of the world.

Opis:: Artykuł poświęcony jest pomiarowi efektywności wydatków ogółem. Podmiotem badania jest 37 miast na prawach powiatu zaliczanych do kategorii dużych, tzn. liczących od stu tysięcy do miliona mieszkańców. Horyzont czasowy analizy obejmuje lata 2009- -2013. W badaniu zastosowano nieparametryczną metodę oceny efektywności względnej Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Za nakład przyjęto wydatki budżetowe ogółem na mieszkańca, rezultaty zaś zobrazowano za pomocą siedmiu wskaźników wpływających na jakość życia mieszkańców w obszarach: opieki zdrowotnej, finansów gospodarstw domowych, rynku pracy, edukacji, wypoczynku i rekreacji, bezpieczeństwa publicznego oraz ochrony środowiska naturalnego. Na podstawie wyników badań wskazano jednostki nieefektywne oraz zaproponowano kierunki zmian umożliwiające osiągnięcie pełnej efektywności. W toku analizy potwierdzone zostały postawione hipotezy zakładające, że efektywność wydatków budżetowych jest większa w miastach o mniejszej liczebności mieszkańców oraz w miastach z mniejszymi wydatkami per capita.
