Opis:
There is undisputed need to properly measure innovativeness and patent data is commonly used in order to achieve that. However, its drawbacks are rarely taken into account. The aim of this article is to identify main advantages and disadvantages of using patents as innovativeness indicators - based on the literature analysis. Authors conclude that patents are valuable innovativeness indicators, which among others are very accessible and easy to use, but on the other hand they cannot be regarded as universal, as they have significant drawbacks and thus may lead to false conclusions. Therefore, it is still advised to use patent data, but only if being fully aware of their limitations.

Vegetation diversity of the Scots pine stands in different forest sites in the Turawa Forest District

Opis:
The utility of phytocenotic indices in the diagnosis and classification of forest sites might be limited because of vegetation degeneration in managed forests. However, even in secondary communities it may be possible to determine indicator species, although these may differ from typical and well known plant indicators. The aim of this work was to assess the vegetation diversity of Scots pine stands in representative forest site types along a moisture and fertility gradient. In total 120 sample plots from Turawa forests were included in the study. These plots represented young (21–40 years) and old (> 80 years) Scots-pine-dominated stands. The forest sites were categorized according to Polish site classification. Four site categories were studied: Bśw (very nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMśw (nutrient-poor and mesic sites), BMw (nutrient-poor and moist sites), LMw (quite nutrient-rich and moist sites). The species composition of the forest patches studied hardly differed among forest site types. Almost all of the vegetation in site Bśw was different from both moist site types (BMw and LMw). Sites Bśw and LMw had the exclusive species determined as site indicators. Moreover, young stands had their own site type indicator species which differed from old stands. Numerical classification showed that only two plant communities were widespread: Leucobryo-Pinetum in Bśw and BMśw, and the community of Pinus sylvestris and Molinia caerulea in BMśw, BMw, LMw. In secondary communities typical indicator species may not be useful, but it is possible to determinate species that are locally unique to forest site type. Despite the convergence in the composition of the plant community resulting from tree stand unification, plant communities have the capacity for a more diverse composition. Tree stand conversion can increase phytocenotic diversity.

Floristic and habitat diversity of the dunes in the Narew River Valley

Opis:
The aim of the research presented here was to determine and compare the habitat conditions of the two adjacent dune areas in the Narew River Valley. For the comparative studies we used the ecological indicator value method and the index of forest soil trophism (ITGL), both of which revealed differences between the investigated habitats. Values of ITGL indicate that in the case of the Uroczysko Serwańce dune, which is covered by a mixed coniferous forest (Serratulo-Piceetum), the habitat is oligotrophic, while the habitat on the Ławki Małe dune is dominated by a not yet fully developed Tilio-Carpinetum plant community which displays a mesotrophic character. Similar differences were observed using ecological indicator values. Soil indices calculated for the oak-hornbeam stand on the Ławki Małe dune indicate the presence of fresh, mesotrophic, humus-mineral soils made of sandy loam or silt substrate with a near-neutral pH. From these results we can deduce that climatic conditions, affected by peatlands, have a greater impact on the development of vegetation on inpeatland dunes than relatively poor soils.

Opis:
In the age of globalization and intense competitiveness every company should strive to achieve the best, rational use of possessed resources. It can be achieved through, among others, analysis of crucial production processes. The main aim of the research is to identify the main factors causing the standstills of hydraulic-press. During the research the "Picture of the day" analysis was used along with the OEE ( Overall Equipment Effectiveness) indicator. More over the current and future Value Stream Mapping was created. In the future the following research can be used to determine methods which will, to a considerable degree, eliminate the standstills in a given situation.

The Borki Primeval Forest as an important forest bird area

Opis:

This paper presents an overview of bird research carried out in the Borki Primeval Forest during the last 30 years. The Borki Primeval Forest can be considered as one of the most important forest bird sites in Poland. Its avifauna comprises 139 breeding species, including 11 rare and endangered species listed in the Polish Red Data Book of Animals as well as 30 species listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive. Despite its relatively small area, the Borki Primeval Forest holds at least 1% of Polish breeding population of as many as 12 bird species. For seven out of these species it is one of the most important breeding sites in the country. The avifauna of the Borki Primeval Forest consists mostly of typical forest birds including 24 indicator species which are associated with natural forests. The richness of bird species in the Borki Primeval Forest and the abundance of several valuable groups of breeding species are the result of a high landscape and habitat diversity as well as a relatively small anthropopression combined with a high degree of naturalness of forest stands.

Opis:
Red osier dogwood Cornus sericea L. is a species native to NorthAmerica, but spreading in Europe. It has been classified a kenophyte in Poland and is considered invasive. However, knowledge on its distribution is insufficient and lacking entirely for many parts of the country. Therefore, the aims of this study were to document stands of C. sericea in the buffer zone of the Skarpa Ursynowska nature reserve in Warsaw, to provide new information on morphological features that were inconsistently reported in the literature, and to summarise the known distribution of this species in the mazovian voivodeship. Field studies were carried out in 2021 within six new stands of C. sericea located in the buffer zone of Skarpa Ursynowska. The work included phytosociological relevés and measurement of the following parameters: length of leaves (blade and petiole) and the maximum height of plants. Based on the herb layer species found in the phytosociological relevés, ecological indicator values were calculated in order to determine habitat conditions. The distribution of the species in the mazovian voivodeship was then mapped by means of the ATPOL cartogram method. In the vicinity of the Skarpa Ursynowska, C. sericea occurred in scrub communities and at the early successional stages of forest development that is in habitats with favourable light conditions, sufficient humidity and fertility. The presence of a number of additional alien species was also a characteristic feature of the stands. C. sericea individuals identified in this survey were tall and showed almost no tendency to creep, most likely due to the favourable light conditions. Their leaves were larger (average length 189.2 mm) compared to published data, but the shape of the seeds was characteristic for the species. This is the first re port of spontaneous accurrence of this species in Warsaw. The largest known concentration of C. sericea stands in the mazovian voivodeship was documented west of Warsaw and includes the Kampinos National Park. However, the small number of existing reports indicates that documentation of this species’ distribution in the region is still insufficient.
