Opis:: The increase in the standard of living and economic development of cities and smaller settlement units implies the extension and modernization of infrastructure, including wastewater collection and treatment systems, which is closely related to the protection of surface water and groundwater. This study analyzes the effects of the modernization of two wastewater treatment plants carried out between 2019 and 2020. These are the municipal wastewater treatment plants for Rawicz and Kościan in the Wielkopolska region. The analysis of contamination indicators and wastewater treatment efficiency showed that in both plants, the modernization and extension of wastewater treatment and sludge treatment technologies resulted in improved treated wastewater parameters and better sludge preparation for use. The high efficiency of contaminant removal (mostly above 94%) improves the standard of living, intensifies care for the environment, and increases the attractiveness of the agglomerations served by the analyzed plants. The obtained results were confirmed by statistical tests.

Opis:: A simple hydraulic model of liquid and gas flow from a collecting sump via vacuum service lateral to a vacuum main has been presented. The model was formulated and validated on experimental data and CFD simulations. The standard gas (air) to liquid (sewage) volumetric ratio is roughly equal to the ratio of subsequent admittance times of these two phases, provided that the liquid plug is not fully sucked from the service lateral to the vacuum main during the valve open time. A longer air suction time is needed only when the service lateral is too short to provide enough air to transport the sewage past the nearest downstream lift on the vacuum main. Sizing properly the active sump volume and valve open time for a given service lateral length, one can provide the required air to liquid ratios along the vacuum main, thus minimizing the energy consumption by the vacuum pumps.

Opis:: The paper presents the results of research on the influence of the operational rinsing of a sewer system on the composition of raw sewage, the effectiveness of the operation of the mechanical part of a wastewater treatment plant and changes in the technological parameters of the biological reactor. The results of the research have shown an increase in sewage pollution during the rinsing of the sewer system. The value of the COD indicator increased from 799 to 1306 mg/dm3, BOD5 from 538 to 1044 mg/dm3, and total suspended solids from 259 to 1508 mg/dm3. The calculations indicate that an increase in the concentrations of pollution during the rinsing of the sewer system requires a high working efficiency of the mechanical part of the wastewater treatment plant. With a low efficiency the volume of the biological reactor can increase even by 30%.

Opis:: Five wastewater treatment plants from the Świętokrzyskie Province have been briefly described, and a general analysis of the composition and quantity of sewage sludge from the data objects has been conducted. The paper also presents various ways of management of sewage sludge. The authors analyzed sediments from the wastewater treatment plant for PE in the range of 15 000–99 999 located in Ostrowiec, Opatów, Starachowice, Skarżysko-Kamienna, and in Sandomierz. The sludge was characterized in terms of its quantity and quality, the content of heavy metals, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and organic solids.

Opis:: The study summarises the energy consumption data obtained from the Slovak wastewater treatment plants. Overall, 51 large WWTPs using mesophilic anaerobic sludge digestion and biogas utilisation (the total capacity of 2.5 mil. p.e.) and 17 small rural WWTPs (the total capacity 15 000 p.e.) were compared in many technological and energy parameters. The average energy consumption in large WWTPs in Slovakia is 0.485 kWh/m3 and 0.915 kWh/m3 in small rural plants. The average energy demand related to BOD5 load represents the value of 2.27 kWh/kg BOD5, in Slovak plants. The specific energy production is relatively low - in average 1.2 kWh_el /m3 of produced biogas and 0.1 kWh_el /m 3 of treated wastewater, respectively. The average energy autarky in Slovak plants is 25.2%. Some plants have high energy autarky (>65%), despite no external biowastes being dosed to these during operation.
