Measurements and searches performed with the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC often involve signatures with one or more prompt leptons. Such analyses are subject to `fake/non-prompt' lepton backgrounds, where either a hadron or a lepton from a hadron decay or an electron from a photon conversion satisfies the prompt-lepton selection criteria. These backgrounds often arise within a hadronic jet because of particle decays in the showering process, particle misidentification or particle interactions with the detector material. As it is challenging to model these processes with high accuracy in simulation, their estimation typically uses data-driven methods. Three methods for carrying out this estimation are described, along with their implementation in ATLAS and their performance.

The identification of top quark decays where the top quark has a large momentum transverse to the beam axis, known as top tagging, is a crucial component in many measurements of Standard Model processes and searches for beyond the Standard Model physics at the Large Hadron Collider. Machine learning techniques have improved the performance of top tagging algorithms, but the size of the systematic uncertainties for all proposed algorithms has not been systematically studied. This paper presents the performance of several machine learning based top tagging algorithms on a dataset constructed from simulated proton-proton collision events measured with the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The systematic uncertainties associated with these algorithms are estimated through an approximate procedure that is not meant to be used in a physics analysis, but is appropriate for the level of precision required for this study. The most performant algorithms are found to have the largest uncertainties, motivating the development of methods to reduce these uncertainties without compromising performance. To enable such efforts in the wider scientific community, the datasets used in this paper are made publicly available.

This paper describes the concept, technical realisation and validation of a largely data-driven method to model events with $Z \to \tau\tau$ decays. In $Z \to \mu\mu$ events selected from proton-proton collision data recorded at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012, the Z decay muons are replaced by $\tau$ leptons from simulated $Z \to \tau\tau$ decays at the level of reconstructed tracks and calorimeter cells. The $\tau$ lepton kinematics are derived from the kinematics of the original muons. Thus, only the well-understood decays of the Z boson and $\tau$ leptons as well as the detector response to the $\tau$ decay products are obtained from simulation. All other aspects of the event, such as the Z boson and jet kinematics as well as effects from multiple interactions, are given by the actual data. This so-called $\tau$-embedding method is particularly relevant for Higgs boson searches and analyses in $\tau\tau$ final states, where $Z \to \tau\tau$ decays constitute a large irreducible background that cannot be obtained directly from data control samples. In this paper, the relevant concepts are discussed based on the implementation used in the ATLAS Standard Model $H \to \tau\tau$ analysis of the full datataset recorded during 2011 and 2012.

Czynniki kształtujące jakość płytkich wód podziemnych na Pogórzu Wiśnickim
Factors affecting the shallow groundwater quality in the Wiśnickie Foothills

The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of groundwater and the factors affecting it in the Stara Rzeka catchment located in the marginal zone of the Carpathian Mountains in the Wiśnickie Foothills. Nineteen samples of water were collected from wells and their pH and electrolytic conductivity were measured. The chemical composition of the samples, including 14 ions was determined by ion chromatography. Principal component analysis (PCA) allowed to isolate the factors affecting the quality of groundwater. Geological structure and anthropogenic pressure proved to be the determining factors. The cluster analysis was also used in this study and it allowed to group the analyzed waters in terms of their mutual similarity. Additionally, the chemical composition of water samples was determined with regard to their suitability for human consumption.
Celem opracowania było zbadanie chemizmu wód podziemnych w zlewni Starej Rzeki zlokalizowanej na progu Karpat na Pogórzu Wiśnickim a także określenie czynników go warunkujących. Pobrano 19 próbek wody ze studni a następnie zmierzono ich pH i przewodnictwo elektrolityczne właściwe. Skład chemiczny próbek w zakresie 14 jonów oznaczono metodą chromatografii jonowej. Analiza składowych głównych (PCA) pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie czynników kształtujących jakość wód podziemnych. Decydującymi czynnikami okazały się budowa geologiczna i antropopresja. W badaniach wykorzystano również analizę skupień, która pozwoliła na zgrupowanie badanych wód pod względem ich wzajemnego podobieństwa. Dokonano także analizy składu chemicznego wód pod kątem ich przydatności do spożycia przez ludzi.

Analysis of Fermi gamma-ray burst duration distribution

Context. Two classes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), short and long, have been determined without any doubts, and are usually prescribed to different physical scenarios. A third class, intermediate in T_{90} durations has been reported in the datasets of BATSE, Swift, RHESSI, and possibly BeppoSAX. The latest release of >1500 GRBs observed by Fermi gives an opportunity to further investigate the duration distribution. Aims. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether a third class is present in the log T_{90} distribution, or whether it is described by a bimodal distribution. Methods. A standard x^{2} fitting of a mixture of Gaussians was applied to 25 histograms with different binnings. Results. Different binnings give various values of the fitting parameters, as well as the shape of the fitted curve. Among five statistically significant fits, none is trimodal. Conclusions. Locations of the Gaussian components are in agreement with previous works. However, a trimodal distribution, understood in the sense of having three distinct peaks, is not found for any binning. It is concluded that the duration distribution in the Fermi data is well described by a mixture of three log-normal distributions, but it is intrinsically bimodal, hence no third class is present in the T_{90} data of Fermi. It is suggested that the log-normal fit may not be an adequate model.
