Opis:: Debates on the beatification and canonization processes have always been a concern to the Catholic Church hierarchy. We have identified changes in the established norms at different times in history, with specific literature on the ways to decree the sacralization of an individual. Based on what is proposed by Cultural History, we analyzed the norms used in beatification and canonization causes based on representations that were elaborated around individuals who lived according to the standards established by the Catholic Church. To do this, we used normative documents, codes, and guidelines for the clergy, to understand the legal procedures of canonical norms. Throughout the article, we present how the causes for sainthood were based on historical, cultural, and social aspects for the faithful and the clergy.
Os debates sobre os processos de beatificação e canonização sempre foram preocupações para a hierarquia da Igreja Católica. Em diferentes momentos históricos, identificamos modificações nas normas estabelecidas, com leitura específica sobre os caminhos para se decretar a sacralização de um indivíduo. A partir das propostas da História Cultural, analisamos as normas utilizadas em causas de beatificação e canonização, a partir das representações elaboradas em torno de indivíduos que viveram de acordo com padrões estabelecidos pela Igreja Católica. Para isso, utilizamo-nos dos documentos normativos, códigos e orientações ao clero, com o objetivo de compreender os procedimentos jurídicos das normas canônicas. Durante o artigo, apresentamos como as causas em torno dos santos foram fundamentadas em aspectos histórico, culturais e sociais para os fiéis e o clero.

Opis:: Every beatification, especially every canonization inevitably entails the absoluteness of the papal primacy, mainly his infallibility. From the early years of the Church, there has been a strong correlation between recognizing the ho-liness of candidates’ life and recognizing the signs of God performed after the candidates’ death. And so it is up to this day. A miracle, consequently, being the evidence in the canonization law, is also the subject of proving. Therefore, before any miracle is announced, it is necessary to first prove it, in order to obtain an absolute moral certainty about the authenticity of the particular phe-nomena, which is alleged to exceed the laws of nature. This is why the expert witnesses are appointed, to analyze an alleged miracle in solely human terms and give the final opinion about its authenticity. Such proving begins on prem-ises of the diocese, where the miracle was alleged, and then the investigation proceeds to the Congregation premises, where further consultations are being held.

In this article, based on selected characters from the world of politics (including Charles of Austria - Emperor of peace, HiIdegard Burjan - a Member of the Parliament of the Republic of Austria and Robert Schuman - French Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgio La Pira - a member of the Constituent Assembly, and other people) will discuss their efforts to peace, creation of constitutional rights, shaping Catholic thought, welfare, safety, women's rights, education, and more.

Opis:: The article discussed the time and place of the canonization of Methodius and the difference in the treatment he received in the Roman Catholic Church and in the Bulgarian Church. The study highlights the overall distinct treatment of the two brothers while tracing the changes in the attitude to Methodius as opposed to that to Cyril in the first texts written in the Slavonic alphabet, in Bulgaria. Two canons and anonymous stichera from the service on the feast day of Methodius indicate that his disciples played a significant role for establishing the cult of Methodius. In the earlier years, there was a difference – the cult of Methodius was in the process of establishment, while Cyril had already been recognized as a saint whose cult was supported by an established tradition and whose figure had been used to support the holiness of his elder brother, later born to eternal life. The study also determines the time of the beginning of the cult of Methodius in Bulgaria at the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 10th century, after the treatise On the Letters and after the translation of the Nebesa (“Heaven”) by John the Exarch in Old Bulgarian, most likely at the time of Constantine of Preslav and Clement of Ochrid.

Opis:: This essay historicizes the Shakespeare curriculum at UC Berkeley’s English department over the last one hundred years. An elite research university in the United States, UC Berkeley’s extensive course offerings have expanded due to changes in undergraduate education and external cultural shifts. With a growing number of courses on sexuality, race, gender, etc., that became part of the purview of an English department, the teaching of Shakespeare expanded as well. I demonstrate how the emphasis on Shakespeare in the U.S. undergraduate curriculum shifts over time from one form of recognition—an acknowledgement of his value or worth—to a recognition of identifying with his work based on prior experience. Distinguishing between courses that combine “Shakespeare and” and those that combine “Literature and,” I expose the consequences each has for the canonicity of both Shakespeare and subject fields with which his works are placed in conversation, explicitly and implicitly. I argue that the expansion of Shakespeare in the American undergraduate curriculum coincides with and depends on the compression of key aspects of interpretation that pose challenges for the new knowledges it seeks to create. I illuminate how an expanded Shakespeare curriculum saw a compression of Shakespeare into metonymic mythic status, which has implications for the teaching of literature from various identity and cultural groups. I demonstrate how the origins of an expansive undergraduate Shakespeare curriculum in the United States positions Shakespeare as the interlocutor for a wide range of topics.

Opis:: Artykuł przedstawia argumenty przemawiające w sposób jednoznaczny za procesowym charakterem kanonicznego potwierdzenia świętości, czyli orzeczenia beatyfikacji czy kanonizacji prowadzonego w diecezji. Zostało to także podkreślone w wystąpieniu kardynała prefekta Kongregacji Spraw Kanonizacyjnych 18 lutego 2008 r. podczas prezentacji wydanej przez tę kongregację, a zaaprobowanej przez Benedykta XVI Instrukcji dotyczącej ściślejszego zachowania norm obowiązującego prawa. Kardynał podkreślił, m.in., że dokument ten nie ma charakteru ustawodawczego, ale jest aktem administracyjnym Kongregacji Spraw Kanonizacyjnych. Warto zauważyć, że prefekt odrzucił rozpowszechnianą błędną i pozbawianą podstaw ideę o rzekomym zastąpieniu przez ustawodawstwo Jana Pawła II metodologii procesowej w prowadzeniu spraw kanonicznego potwierdzenia świętości przez metodologię poszukiwań historyczno-krytycznych. Włoskie słowo inchiesta („dochodzenie”) należy zatem rozumieć nie tylko jako dochodzenie czysto naukowe, ale procesowe. Wykładnia regulaminów wewnętrznych Kongregacji jak i doktryna opowiada się także za procedurą kanoniczną, czyli analogiczną do zwyczajnych procesów kanonicznych nie tylko w fazie diecezjalnej spraw, ale i w fazie rzymskiej. Wreszcie rozważania nad charakterem ostatecznej decyzji papieskiej w sprawie beatyfikacji czy kanonizacji dopełniają całości spojrzenia na kanoniczne potwierdzenie świętości w Kościele, jako na akt złożony i specyficzny dla tego rodzaju spraw.
The paper presents unequivocal arguments in favour of the procedural nature of the canonical confirmation of holiness, as regards the process of beatification and canonization on the diocesan level. It was also underlined by Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on 18 February 2008 in his intervention, concerning the Instruction issued by the Congregation and approved by the Pope, on stricter obeying the existing law. It was clearly stressed by the Cardinal that the document is not legislative in nature but is an administrative act of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. He also rejected the common and false opinion that Pope John Paul II allegedly replaced procedural methodology in canonical processes of the confirmation of holiness by a methodology of historical-critical research. The Italian term “inchiesta” is to be understood not as a solely scientific inquiry but also procedural. The interpretation of the internal regulations of the Congregation and its doctrine are in favour of the canonical procedure, which is analogous to ordinary canonical processes both in the diocesan and in the Roman phase. Eventually, the paper refers to the nature of the final decision of the pope in cases of beatification or canonization, which proves that the canonical confirmation of holiness in the Church is complex and unique to this kind of cases.
Im Artikel werden Argumente zusammengestellt, die eindeutig zugunsten des prozesshaften Charakters kanonischer Bestätigung der Heiligkeit, d.h. der in der Diözese durchgeführten Festlegung der Selig- bzw. Heiligsprechung dienen. Dies wurde auch in der Ansprache des Präfekten der Kongregation der Selig- und Heiligsprechungsprozesse am 18. Februar 2008 bei der Vorstellung der durch diese Kongregation veröffentlichten und durch Benedikt XVI approbierten Instruktion unterstrichen, bezogen auf die strikte Observanz des geltenden Rechtes. Der Kardinal hat u.a. betont, dass dieses Dokument nicht den Rechtscharakter hat, sondern ein administrativer Akt der o.g. Kongregation ist. Es verdient die Aufmerksamkeit, dass der Präfekt die verbreitete falsche und grundlose Idee verworfen hat, dass in der Gesetzgebung Johannes Paul II. die Prozessmethodologie im kanonischen Verfahren bezüglich der Bestätigung der Heiligkeit durch die Methodologie der historisch-kritischen Untersuchungen abgelöst wurde. Das italienische Wort inchiesta (Ermittlung) soll also nicht nur im Sinne rein wissenschaftlicher Ermittlungen, sondern als eine prozesshafte Ermittlung verstanden werden. Die Auslegung der internen Ordnungen der Kongregation sowie die Rechtslehre plädieren auch zugunsten der kanonischen Prozedur, die zu den ordentlichen kanonischen Prozessen analog ist, und zwar nicht nur auf dem Niveau der Diözese, sondern auch in der römischen Phase der Ermittlungen. Abschließend werden die Überlegungen über den Charakter der endgültigen päpstlichen Entscheidung bezüglich der Selig- oder Heiligsprechung ihm Rahmen einer Übersicht über die kanonische Bestätigung der Heiligkeit in der Kirche ergänzt. Sie ist ein vieldimensionaler Akt, der für solche Angelegenheiten spezifisch ist.

Opis:: The subject of this study is to analyze the process of canonization of John Paul II, compared to a cultural project taking into account the specific management methods for projects. It shows the problems science of memory and also highlighted the impact of the canonization of the phenomenon persisting the memory of John Paul II in the society. According to the adopted thesis the canonization of the Holy Father did not end in the moment of announcing John Paul II saint of the Catholic Church, but it had an impact on the actions taken in the sphere of culture. On the basis of a prior hypothesis we were able to confirm that the memory of the manifestations of the Polish Pope can be classified in tangible and intangible forms of commemoration of the Holy Father. Based on observations of social phenomena and completed studies on attempt was made to show the consequences of canonization in culture. Conducted interviews with representatives of the subjects taking commemorate John Paul II made it possible to present the scope of activity of cultural institutions bearing the name of John Paul II.
Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza procesu kanonizacyjnego Jana Pawła II porównanego do projektu kulturalnego z uwzględnieniem metod zarządzania charakterystycznych dla projektów. Ukazano problematykę „pamięciologii”, a także zwrócono uwagę na wpływ, jaki wywarła kanonizacja na zjawisko utrzymującej się pamięci o Janie Pawle II. Według przyjętej tezy kanonizacja Ojca Świętego nie zakończyła się w momencie ogłoszenia Jana Pawła II świętym Kościoła katolickiego. Miała ona także wpływ na podejmowane działania w sferze kultury. Wnioskując z wcześniejszej hipotezy udało się potwierdzić, iż przejawy pamięci o Papieżu Polaku można sklasyfikować na materialne i niematerialne formy upamiętnienia Ojca Świętego. Na podstawie obserwacji zjawisk społecznych i zrealizowanych badań podjęto próbę ukazania następstw kanonizacji w sferze kultury. Przeprowadzone wywiady z przedstawicielami środowisk podejmujących tematykę upamiętnienia Jana Pawła II umożliwiły przedstawienie zakresu działalności instytucji kultury noszących imię Jana Pawła II.

Opis:: Celem opracowania było przedstawienie potrzeby cudu w dowodzeniu kanonizacyjnym. Autor rozpatrywał fakt uzasadniania i aprobaty cudu oraz propozycje Kongregacji Spraw Kanonizacyjnych odnośnie do tego tematu. Przedstawił procedurę kanonizacyjną, która przeżywała ciągłą ewolucję, a zarazem ukazał, jak akcentowano w niej sprawę cudu i jakie stawiano wymagania do jego akceptacji. W końcowym paragrafie została przedstawiona aktualna procedura kanonizacyjna dotycząca diecezji, a także wymogi samej Kongregacji. Na podstawie dokonanej analizy tekstów prawnych wykazano wartość dowodu z cudu w dowodzeniu świętości kanonizowanej.
The aim of the study was to show the need of a miracle in proving a canonization. We considered the subject of a miracle’s approval. Moreover, we studied the suggestions made by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints related to this topic. Then, we went through the procedures of canonization which was under a continuous development. In addition, we showed the miracle’s necessity and the requirements for its approval. The current procedure of canonization in the diocese and the Congregation’s requirements were presented in the final section. The value of the miracle’s evidence of proving the sanctity has been based on the legal text analysis made during the study.

Opis:: Problem kanonizacji świętego Rocha sięga swoimi początkami wieków średnich. Szczególnie odnotować należy problem braku bulli kanonizacyjnej informującej Kościół Powszechny o dokonanej przez papieża kanonizacji. Ta, w przeciągu wieków, w swojej formie przybierała różnego rodzaju rozwiązania; różniła się zasadniczo kanonizacja wieków średnich od kanonizacji nowożytnej. Wielu papieży wypowiadało się na ten temat szukając optymalnego rozwiązania. Z jednej strony sprostania zapotrzebowaniom wiernych, z drugiej ujednolicenia procedur doprowadzających do wymaganego celu. Taki zamiar osiągnięto za sprawą wielu papieży wypowiadających się w różnego rodzaju dokumentach Stolicy Apostolskiej, które zostały w niniejszym artykule chociaż częściowo uwzględnione. Przedstawienie procedur doprowadzających do aktu kanonizacji, począwszy od wieku X po wiek XVI, zajmowało wysiłki kilkunastu papieży. To o nich wspominamy szczególnie w kontekście nieistniejącej dziś bulli kanonizacyjnej świętego Rocha. Poszukiwania okoliczności jej powstania i ogłoszenia przedstawiamy w kontekście materiałów źródłowych; już nie tylko bulli papieskich, ale istniejących najstarszych hagiografii świętego, począwszy od Vita sancti Rochi Francesca Dieda, księgi Anonima niemieckiego, Acta Breviora, aż po La vie et légénde de Monseigneur saint Roch Jehana Phelipota. Pojawiające się w nich punkty wspólne życiorysu świętego Rocha, ale i różnice, pozwalają na przeprowadzenie analizy odpowiadającej na pytanie, czy kanonizacja świętego Rocha dokonała się podczas Soboru w Konstancji (1414–1418), czy też w innych okolicznościach. Ponadto przedstawione zostały w niniejszym opracowaniu argumenty pośrednie, które w odróżnieniu od historycznych jednoznacznie, od czasów śmierci świętego, przyczyniały się do powstania jego kultu. Są to argumenty liturgiczne, o powszechnej dla Kościoła rozpiętości, jak i argumenty artystyczne, dokumentujące święte życie patrona od zarazy dżumy. W wielu miejscach, dzięki obrazom i rzeźbom, silna wiara w szybkim czasie stała się elementem propagującym kult świętego nie tylko w Europie. Artykuł kończy hipoteza ukierunkowana na trop odnalezienia – zdaniem autora – zaginionej bulli, która rozwiązałaby powstałe i narastające wokół świętego Rocha wątpliwości.
The difficulties concerning St Rocco’s canonisation commenced in the Middle Ages, largely due to the missing papal bull. Taking into account the popular piety and the need for establishing the rules of the canonisation process, a number of popes were searching for an optimal solution to this problem. This paper presents selected Holy See documents signed by a dozen of pontiffs spanning from the 10th till the 16th century which detail the canonisation procedure. Another set of sources regarding St Rocco’s case are his oldest hagiographies: Vita sancti Rochi by Francesco Diedo, Acta Breviora by an anonymous German author and La vie et légénde de Monseigneur saint Roch by Jehan Phelipot. They help to answer the question whether St Rocco was declared saint at the Council of Constance (1414–1418) or not. Finally, the liturgical sources as well as certain works of art point at the widespread cult of St Rocco as a protector against the Black Death. In conclusion, the author of this article offers a possible path to find the lost canonisation bull that might put an end to the questions arising around the saint.
