Opis:
Mimo coraz częstszego zainteresowania badaczy zaburzeniami mowy w przebiegu otępienia alzheimerowskiego w dalszym ciągu brak jest wystarczającej liczby badań empirycznych opisujących to zagadnienie. Niniejszy artykuł w oparciu o studium przypadku mężczyzny prezentuje charakterystykę zaburzeń mowy u osoby z otępieniem alzheimerowskim, przebieg diagnozy logopedycznej wraz z oceną poziomu poszczególnych sprawności językowych oraz podstawowe założenia i kierunki planowanej terapii logopedycznej. Badania pokazują, iż w zależności od indywidualnych cech danego pacjenta zaburzenia mowy mogą przyjmować odmienny charakter.
Alzheimer's disease is one of the most serious neurological diseases of today’s ageing society. The number of people, particularly seniors, affected by this condition is increasing every year. Speech disorders are one of the earliest symptoms of this disease and reveal themselves early in its development. Despite the increasing interest of researchers in speech disorders associated with Alzheimer's dementia, there are still not enough empirical studies describing this issue. This article, based on a case study of a man, presents the characteristics of speech disorders in a person with Alzheimer's dementia, the course of speech therapy diagnosis with assessment of the level of individual language skills and the basic assumptions and directions for the planned speech therapy. The research shows that, depending on the individual characteristics of the patient in question, language disorders can take on a different character.

Opis:
Introduction. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, which is a serious health problem for societies that live longer. Spontaneous dominant mutations and polymorphisms of selected genes play an important role in development of AD. Aim. Several polymorphisms in selected genes strongly associated with development of Alzheimer’s disease were highlighted in this review: APOE, CYP46, APP, PSEN1, PSEN2, UBQLN1, BACE1, PRND, APBB2, TOMM 40. These gene polymorphisms have a significant role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease and they have potential to be biomarkers. Researchers combine efforts to find significant polymorphisms that would ensure that a person is predisposed to the occurrence of disease symptoms. This topic is often taken up by scientists seeking to develop effective genetic tests for diagnosing AD. Material and methods. Analysis of literature from web of knowledge: Web of Science (all database), NCBI and PubMed. Results. We reviewed the selected important genes and polymorphisms which are most often associated with development of AD. Conclusion. It should be noted that nowadays scientists strive not to focus on only one polymorphism in the gene but on several polymorphisms in different genes concomitantly and above all on interactions between them to the diagnosis of this disease. Only this approach to AD will contribute to the creation of appropriate identification methods. Moreover, we should use the new generation tools - the platform for collecting data and personalized medicine.

Biomedical signals are usually low amplitude and high bandwidth signals. EEG signals are very low amplitude (generally less than 300 μV) and very high bandwidth (range from 0.5 to 100 Hz), too. EEG was used to assist in the diagnosis of brain damage, Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease, and certain mental disorders. In this study amplifier and filters designed with CCII+ and these simulations are performed with PSPICE program. Normal brain signal, the Alzheimer brain signal, epilepsy brain signal are compared, the shrinking hippocampus compared 25 years old normal brain, 75 years old normal brain and 75 years old with the Alzheimer brain.

Opis:
Language functions, particularly disordered lexical skills were diagnosed in the examined woman based on selected diagnostic tests of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE). Furthermore, an experimental version of the author's original test for assessing lexical-semantic performance in dementia was used. The author presents a case study of a 79-year-old woman diagnosed with logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) secondary to Alzheimer’s disease. The author describes the symptoms of anomie manifested by the study participant and the supplementary strategies she applied in the case of lexical deficits. The analysis of the findings obtained in the course of language function assessment allowed the author to assess the fluency of speech, speech comprehension, repetition and naming. The study participant diagnosed with lvPPA was observed to manifest the following: an absence of motor speech disorders, absence of characteristics of evident agrammatism, preserved comprehension of individual words, preserved semantic knowledge of objects, disordered retrieval of words in spontaneous speech and in attempts to name, and disordered repetition of sentences and phrases. The analysis of the discussed case study allowed the author to discuss the progressive lexical deficits manifested by the lvPPA patient and to record those supplementary strategies that were most frequently applied in the lexical difficulties experienced by the female patient diagnosed with lvPPA.

Opis:
The number of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients is rapidly increasing. To date, there may be half a million Alzheimer’s patients in Poland. World Health Organization forecasts that the total number of patients with dementia will amount to 75.6 million in 2030 and increase to 135.5 million by 2050. Modern care includes health strengthening activities, disease prevention, shaping the ability to live with the disease or disability, and assisting in dignified and peaceful death. This paper aims to present a model method for nursing of an Alzheimer’s patient, taking into account external and internal factors. Problems with everyday activities arise in each stage of the disease. Yet, their largest number is observed in the third and final stage. A nurse providing professional help and support to caregivers of patients with AD formulates nursing and caring instructions accommodated to the disease stage. According to the authors, the adjustment of individual care to the specific stage of the disease improves the patient’s quality of life. The synthesis of nursing activities performed for Alzheimer’s patients should be focused on the cooperation between the nurse and the patient’s caregiver. The patient’s family and caregivers’ education should be emphasized as their awareness and knowledge of the disease will result in better care. Caregivers’ insufficiency of expertise concerning the appropriate care may deepen the patient’s illness and intensify its consequences. Patients with advanced AD need constant, day-and-night care. Creating such conditions is often connected with sacrificing one’s personal life. Therefore, apart from imparting the knowledge concerning the right care, a nurse provides mental support to Alzheimer’s patients’ caregivers.

Opis:
The current study was undertaken to elucidate a possible neuroprotective role of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) against the development of Alzheimer's disease in experimental rat model. Alzheimer's disease was produced in young female ovariectomized rats by intraperitoneal administration of AlCl3 (4.2 mg/kg body weight) daily for 12 weeks. Half of these animals also received orally DHEA (250 mg/kg body weight, three times weekly) for 18 weeks. Control groups of animals received either DHAE alone, or no DHEA, or were not ovariectomized. After such treatment the animals were analyzed for oxidative stress biomarkers such as hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide and malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity, reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, antiapoptotic marker Bcl-2 and brain derived neurotrophic factor. Also brain cholinergic markers (acetylcholinesterase and acetylcholine) were determined. The results revealed significant increase in oxidative stress parameters associated with significant decrease in the antioxidant enzyme activities in Al-intoxicated ovariectomized rats. Significant depletion in brain Bcl-2 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels were also detected. Moreover, significant elevations in brain acetylcholinesterase activity accompanied with significant reduction in acetylcholine level were recorded. Significant amelioration in all investigated parameters was detected as a result of treatment of Al-intoxicated ovariectomized rats with DHEA. These results were confirmed by histological examination of brain sections. These results clearly indicate a neuroprotective effect of DHEA against Alzheimer's disease.

Opis:
This paper explores the concept of therapeutic gardens surrounding healthcare institutions treating neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Dementias. It focuses on how the design of such spaces can address the specific needs of residents, and describes the recent studies concerning the most relevant guidelines for therapeutic garden design near hospitals, medical centers, and retirement homes. The literature study is compared with results of our recent study on the brain response to different landscapedesign features. According to which an outdoor space with a high level of design compatibility, inward space composition, a clear communication and signage system, while introducing archetypal elements and factoring several visual nuances, can be especially beneficial for patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

Opis:
Dementia, the plague of the aging populations, is highly prevalent in East Asia, with currently over 9,8 million dementia patients. Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, awaits for more detailed research in terms of understanding patomechanism of the disease, but more importantly, in supporting the treatment of this incurable disease in modern medicine. Therefore, alternative therapies assisting traditional therapeutic options become more popular, with the comeback of traditional medications, such as Traditional Japnese Medicine (TJM) - Kampo. The aim of this study was to present the use and effectiveness of TJM in treatment of symptoms of AD. Among articles in PubMed Medline database in years 2008-2018, 8 articles were selected for further analysis. Most of the research (38%) consisted of observational studies using different neuropsychiatric scales and methods of assessment of dementia. Studies presented significant improvements of behavioral symptoms with additional therapy with Yokukansan, Orengedoku-to, Ninjin’yoeito and other Kampo formulas in AD patients. Reviewed research presents effectiveness of Kampo treatment in supporting of cognitive and behavioral symptoms reduction, as well as protection of beta-amyloid induced toxicity. However, more research involving bigger cohorts is needed in order to confirm results on the larger scale, in order to introduce the beneficial aspects of Kampo in AD populations worldwide.
