Opis:: The essay reflects on the role of personal voice and autobiographical experiences in the scientific texts of Maria Reimann, anthropologist and translator (died in 2023). Mingling personal recollections of his friendship and collaboration with Maria Reimann with a more theoretical analysis of her autoethnographic texts the author presents various aspects of our possible understanding of the concepts of “personhood” and “the personal” and their conceivable role in contemporary science. He also reconstructs ethical, political, and metaphysical justifications for including Reimann’s personal perspective in her autoethnographic writings on the experience of disability. Interpreting Reimann’s focus on narratives (rather than identities) through which people share their personal experiences the author links Reimann’s anthropology with approaches to storytelling and empathy outlined in the nonfiction of Jonathan Safran Foer, Rebecca Solnit, and Clarice Lispector.

Opis:: The author presents autoethnography as a systematic research method used in field studies into the emotions of love. She begins by tracing various sociological and anthropological approaches and noting the place they give to an active, subjective researcher with agency. Then she concentrates on how autoethnographic data is generated and used in the course of the research process. In her opinion, autoethnography can be an original source of data—a supplement and verification for other materials collected in the field—if the personal experiences of the researcher are treated with the same attention as the experiences of the persons studied. She proposes to verify these experiences and the researcher’s activities in the world by use of the “clinical” and analytic autoethnographic method, which relies on the strategy of the “researcher as a tool.” This concept corresponds to the figure of the “vulnerable observer” used by researchers of the school of evocative autoethnography; it turns the researcher’s personal biography into a unit of analysis.

Opis:: In this autoethnographic writing, we explore the concepts of longing and belonging through a collaborative writing process that is fictional at times and autoethnographic at times. We present an experimental and arts-based approach to analyzing and understanding memories, and themes of nostalgia, belongingness, and longing in the present day. Through our autoethnographic fiction (Bochner and Ellis 2016; Ellis 2004) we explore questions such as: what is it like to long and belong, what is it like to long for a future that is embedded in the past, what is it like to futurize/co-futurize memories, and what if the past is the pre-present? As immigrants to Toronto, coming from nations that were once colonized, and still remain in the peripheries of colonization, we ponder about our bodies occupying the third space that we are living in, the feelings of nostalgia and belonging in our fiction. We write about our belongingness to our roots and the trajectories of our beings and think what decolonizing the the concept of memories might evoke. Methodologically, we draw from Erin Manning’s (2016) idea of going against method to propose a collaborative autoethnographic fiction writing and collaging practice that implicates our memories and bodies with our surroundings and other bodies, human, beyond human, and material, as instruments of research. We suggest that the decolonization and dehistoricization of memories and our conceptions of longing, belonging, and creating futures embedded in the past can happen by futurizing our notions of memories. We hope that writing a fiction in conversation with one another and in synchronicity of each other’s experiences will allow us to deconstruct and problematize our understanding of memories, the frictions between avant-garde and nostalgia and interspersing the collaging practice will allow us to build our stories and explore belongingness and nostalgia, longing for something indefinite and unwanted memories.

Opis:: The author presents a research approach that he defines as multisensory autoethnography. He proposes that it should be used for the study of sensory experiences in everyday life, as an important aspect of micropractices. The article is composed of three parts. In the first, the research context is described in reference to the tradition of the sociology of everyday life. The second part discussed the theoretical and methodological approaches that are the basis for autoethnography in general. The third part contains a description of the method proposed by the author. The three assumptions of the method are (1) the personal experience of the researcher, (2) interpersonal communication abilities, and (3) the attempt to grasp the fullest picture of the practices and sensory experiences of the researcher and the persons studied.

Opis:: The article concerns Jadwiga Stańczakowa, a blind journalist and writer, and friend of Miron Białoszewski. The author analyses Stańczakowa’s writing as an independent literary phenomenon deserving its own interpretation. Drawing on autobiographical and autoethnographic work by Maria Reimann, who is also an author with a disability, the author observes the emancipatory meaning of blindness. The text present three identities of Jadwiga Stańczakowa. First, the author shows her as a woman and asks if her blindness affected her femininity and sexuality. Secondly, the author interprets fragments of texts written by Stańczakowa during depression. Finally, she describes the writer’s identity, the most autonomous, although they all depend on Białoszewski.

Opis:: Old Believers are a religious minority living in the north-eastern part of Poland. Since its appearance in the territory of Poland, it has aroused enormous interest due to its diversity. Old Believers in Poland are one of the most detailed and most widely described religious groups in Poland. Among these studies, linguistic studies clearly prevail, but they take into account the historical and cultural context of the emergence and internal development of the community. The aim of this text is to characterize the current research as well as to formulate postulates setting the direction for future research. The first one is dealing with the internal dynamics and variability of the group, the second one shows the need to take into account new research methods allowing for constant updating of the state of knowledge. The third one is about the abolition of the opposition researcher-subject, objective-subjective and making research a space of dialogue, which is associated with a significant change the current paradigm based on the significant status of the researcher-theoretician. The research postulates formulated in this way can also be referred to studies other than Old Believers of religious groups in Poland.

Opis:: The article presents specific aspects of probation officer's work against the background of social problems he encounters. The research on which the article is based was conducted during three-year service in one of probation officer's office in Warsaw. For the sake of the research, the autoethnographic method, characteristic for qualitative and field tests, was used. The author of the text raises the topics of social problems by the example of families under her supervision, where the wards struggle with violence, negligence, difficulties around the divorce, in the background of which conflicts, stimulants or addictions are clearly visible. The aim of the publication is to present the specifics of the work of a probation officer, which is often mistakenly associated with the stigmatization of dysfunctional environments, as well as showing still valid and often marginalized social problems, which despite the increasing living standard of society and the quality of life of Varsovians, are a daily routine for probationers.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to present a specific interaction between a dancer and his/her body. Such a relationship usually emerges in later stages of dancers’ careers, and is accompanied by a small number of formal rules and standards present within a certain dance community. Therefore, it rather occurs among dancers of artistic than of sport genres of dance. Dancer’s relationship with the body is created in the process of negotiating and getting to know one’s body reactions to one’s activities. The body is treated by a dancer as an actor who makes own decisions, and who is sometimes not letting the dancer to fulfill his/ her intentions, for example, these connected with social norms in certain social groups. In order to show and to compare how diverse one’s interactions with one’s body might be, I will also discuss an issue of relation with one’s own body in the autotherapeutic process. Presentation of both these problems also demonstrates two different ways of communicating with one’s own body. This article presents outcomes of a qualitative research on social construction of embodiment, which was conducted with the use of Grounded Theory Methodology and qualitative research techniques, such as: unstructured interviews, video and photo elicited interviews, analysis of visual data, analytic autoethnography, participant and non-participant observation and desk research.

Opis:: This paper sets out my acquaintance with the work of ESREA since 2016, my reading about autobiographical research and the development of my ideas for a study of The Companionship of Books or what is now known as bibliotherapy. I have defined this as how reading books can help to make us feel better. The paper looks at what kind of books this might be and suggests that most may be found in the area of literature, although not exclusively so, and other types such as autobiography or natural history books are suggested. Theories underpinning bibliotherapy are put forward both by literary specialists and by psychotherapists. The views of my own literature students are also set out and examined as are my own views. I refer to my own early experiences of the restorative power found in literature, particularly poetry, and this is referred to as part of a longer autoethnographic enquiry into the subject which this paper is the preface to. A number of personal stories relating to reading books for assistance in difficult times are referred to, again poetry featuring significantly, but also the value of libraries in supporting and enabling individuals to survive life’s rigors. Finally, a parliamentary report is mentioned, referring to the role of the arts in general as a source of improving our mental wellbeing and the contribution to played by two of its proponents in furthering this aim. In my conclusion the importance of adult education is stressed in ensuring that The Companionship of books can help us to progress in a post-pandemic world.

Opis:: Tekst podejmuje dyskusję w sporze pomiędzy przedstawicielami nurtu „sugestywnego” i „analitycznego” w prowadzeniu badań autoetnograficznych. Główne założenie tekstu mówi, że te dwa podejścia można ze sobą łączyć, wykorzystując zalety każdego z nich. Autor wskazuje na ograniczenia podejścia „sugestywnego” i poddaje krytyce jego główne założenia odnoszące się do braku zaangażowania w rozwój teoretyczny dotyczący kultury. Uznaje się za zasadne twierdzenie o konieczności refleksyjnej analizy roli badacza w procesie badawczym. Nie wydaje się jednak, by uwikłanie badacza w strukturę normatywną, społeczną badanej kultury uniemożliwiało tworzenie bardziej ogólnych wyjaśnień dotyczących badanych zjawisk. Można to osiągnąć choćby przez zróżnicowanie dostępnych danych empirycznych, na przykład w postaci wywiadów z innymi członkami kultury czy analizę treści. Akcentowanie sugestywnych walorów autoetnografii nie musi stać w sprzeczności z dążeniem do odkrywania porządku organizacji społecznej i autochtonicznych wzorów kulturowych. W tekście znalazło się również miejsce na wątki z badań własnych. Autoetnografia medytacji oraz kultury kibicowskiej pozwala nie tylko poszerzyć wiedzę dotyczącą tych zjawisk, ale także wskazać ograniczenia i zalety metody.
The article undertakes discussion within dispute between the representatives of “evocative” and “analytical” fields of autoethnography. The main assumption of the text is that these two approaches can be combined, using the advantages of each. The author points out the limitations of the “evocative” approach and criticizes its main assumptions concerning the lack of commitment to development of theory in social sciences. It is considered reasonable to take into account reflective analysis on the role the researcher has in the research process. It does not seem, however, that researcher’s entanglement in normative and social structure can prevent the formation of more general explanations. This can be achieved due to diversification of available empirical data, for example, in the form of interviews with other members of the culture, or content analysis. Emphasizing of evocative values need not be in contradiction with the pursuit of exploring the order of social organization and indigenous cultural patterns. In the article, some samples from research fields are considered. Autoethnography of meditation and fandom culture enables not only to expand the knowledge on these phenomena but also points out limitations and advantages of the method at hand.
