The paper is an attempt to describe the reception of the idea of rationalism in order to represent its reworking in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Croatia in three areas – physics, theology and politics. The authoress reveals how the method developed by Newton in the field of natural sciences has found an application in other disciplines of knowledge, and most of all in theology. In Croatia, this resulted in the application of the category of Kantian reason to ethical considerations. As a rationalist project in the field of politics, cameralism is indicated, an economic doctrine popular in the German and Austrian territories which was closely connected with the development of the enlightened monarchy and bureaucracy in the early modern period.

Although often side-lined, political economy was one of the core languages of the European Enlightenment. In countries such as Spain, this discipline emerged in the 1740s as an essential language of the enlightened movement and a powerful mechanism for connecting with culturally and economically more developed countries. This article uses political economy as a common thread to consider some of the dilemmas currently facing the historiography of the Spanish Enlightenment: a single Enlightenment movement versus national context; radical versus moderate; centre versus peripheries; and an Enlightenment that was tied to the eighteenth century versus a longer-term movement.

As F. J. Turner emphasized on the the frontier in shaping American character, we can say that the frontier shaped the European mindset. In the past, the European frontiers have seen war and carnage. However, many crossborder regions have seen dialogue, communication, commerce, change, travel, and reciprocal fertilization. In the global village, the best perception of the values of Europe is along its borders. The light shines strongest in the point of its source, but it is more appreciated to the point of its limit, where darkness and brightness compete for space – and even for life.

Zwolennicy idei oświecenia, poddając racjonalnej krytyce otaczającą ich rzeczywistość, dokonali gruntownych przeobrażeń we wszystkich dziedzinach życia. Nie oznaczało to jednak, że owe idee i przeobrażenia zyskały powszechną akceptację. Ich przeciwnicy, rozwijając nurt kontroświecenia, zamiast oświeceniowego postępu dostrzegali głęboki upadek i demoralizację. Krytycznie postrzegając nowoczesność, pytali o arbitralność rozumu ludzkiego, o koncepcję natury człowieka, o jego moralność, odpowiedzi udzielając z pozycji apologetów chrześcijaństwa. Dlatego też w dobie Królestwa Polskiego rodzimi antyoświeceniowcy wytrwale zwalczali osiemnastowieczną filozofię, występując przeciwko temu wszystkiemu, co uznali za szkodliwe dla współczesności i religii. Modelowym wręcz przykładem zmagań reprezentantów przeciwstawnych formacji ideowych była polemika o. Karola Surowieckiego z ministrem Stanisławem Kostką Potockim. Ukształtowany w epoce racjonalizmu działający według założeń oświecenia minister był symbolem rozumowych przemian w Rzeczpospolitej drugiej połowy XVIII w. Po drugiej stronie światopoglądowej barykady stał o. Surowiecki, antyoświeceniowo nastawiony franciszkanin-reformat, który zaciekle bronił Kościoła i religii. Ich polemiczne starcie doskonale obrazowało, jak bardzo prezentowane przez nich myślowe światy nie przystawały do siebie.
By criticizing the world around them, the supporters of the idea of Enli- ghtenment brought about profound transformations in all areas of life. This did not mean, however, that such ideas and transformations gained widespread acceptance. On the contrary, their opponents, who saw decli- ne and demoralization in lieu of ‘enlightenment', developed the Counter- -Enlightenment movement. Critically perceiving modernity, they asked questions about the arbitrariness of human reason, the concept of human nature and human morality, giving answers from the position of Christian apologists. Therefore in the period of the Kingdom of Poland, the Polish anti-Enlightenment movement persevered against eighteenth-century philosophy, opposing everything they considered harmful to modernity and religion. A perfect example of the struggle between representatives of hosti- le ideological factions was the polemics between Father Karol Surowiecki and Stanisław Kostka Potocki, minister of the Kingdom. Educated in the age of reason and following the assumptions of the Enlightenment, the minister was a symbol of the rational changes in the Second Polish Republic in the second half of the 18th century. On the other side of the barricade stood Father Surowiecki, an anti-Enlightenment Franciscan reformer, fier- cely defending the Church and religion. Their clash perfectly illustrated the incompatibility of their intellectual worlds.

The article describes a group of one hundred and twenty Polish authors who were active from about the mid-18th to the mid-19th century and formed part of the Counter-Enlightenment movement. The writers in question came from the gentry but mostly belonged to the clergy, with diocesan priests being the most numerous. The next largest group were the Jesuits, followed by the Piarists and missionaries, and the smallest part was made up of representatives of all the other circles. The authors came from the eastern lands of the former First Polish Republic, i.e., Małopolska and Podlasie. The issues they discussed were influenced by the nature of the vocation pursued by a given order, the unification and standardization of religious education in accordance with the Catholic Enlightenment, and to a lesser extent, by foreign studies (mainly in Rome) and access to libraries. Counter-Enlightenment writers were active in large centers – Warsaw, Vilnius, Krakow, and Lviv, less often in the provinces. As many as eighty-seven of them were authors of more than two original works, and eighteen were translators of foreign works on the subject. Some authors were promoted by representatives of the magnates; others benefited from the support of the clerical hierarchy. Most, however, acted independently.

Artykuł dotyczy słownictwa wskazującego na rodzinę w polskim oświeceniu. Analiza opiera się na poezji religijnej K. Benisławskiej, F. Karpińskiego, F.D. Kniaźnina, J.P. Woronicza i J.A. Załuskiego. Uwzględniony został w niej aspekt życia ziemskiego i relacja między Bogiem a człowiekiem oraz wynikające z nich skomplikowane zależności: dzięcięctwo wszystkich ludzi, macierzyństwo Maryi i braterstwo między ludźmi a Jezusem-Bogiem. W sumie analizie poddano 76 jednostek, bogatą grupę stanowią np. określenia dziecka: potomek, niemowlę, niemówlę, niemówlątko, dziecko,  ziecina, dziecię, dziatki, dziateczki, dziatwa, syn, córka, córa. Poeci, przedstawiając członków rodziny, wskazują na ich powinności względem Boga i najbliższych. W poezji Benisławskiej wyraźnie dowartościowana jest kobieta, która jako matka i mężatka uczestniczy w życiu na chwałę Boga.
The article deals with vocabulary related to the family in the Polish Enlightenment. The analysis is based on the religious poetry of K. Benisławska, F. Karpiński, F.D. Kniaźnin, J.P. Woronicz and J.A. Załuski. The aspect of earthly life and the relationship between God and man, and their complicated inter-relationships is included in it: childhood of all people, the motherhood of Maria and brotherhood between people and Jesus-God. A total of 76 vocabulary items were analyzed. A rich group of these vocabulary items are, for example, terms for the child: potomek, niemowlę, niemówlę, niemówlątko, dziecko, dziecina, dziecię, dziatki, dziateczki, dziatwa, syn, córka, córa. Poets presenting family members indicate their duty to God and family. In Benisławska’s poetry, woman is clearly appreciated as mother and wife, participating in life and the glory of God.
