European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a broad-leaved fast-growing tree species common in most parts of Europe, highly-valued for its ecological properties and occurrence in many forest site types. Its future is threatened, especially by an invasive fungal pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus causing disintegration of E. ash stands throughout all Europe. This paper deals with changes in stand structure, biodiversity and production parameters in mixed European ash stands in the Krkonoše Mountains National park, Czech Republic, with respect to ash dieback progress for period 2009–2015. Studied four permanent research plots (0.25 ha) showed negative dynamics of stand structural and production parameters. Volume of ash ranged between 98–376 m3 ha–1 (stand volume 378–613 m3 ha–1), which indicates a decrease by 2.7% during 6 years. Detected fungi caused mean deterioration of foliage by 22.9%, canopy by 15.8% and mortality reached 15.2%. The earlier ash dieback symptoms were detected at suppressed and intermediate trees, especially on waterlogged sites and at low altitude. Conversely, ash dieback was reflected less intensively at higher-elevated sloping stands, although low temperature (particularly severe frosts at the beginning of the year) was prevailing limiting factor for radial growth of ash in these mountain areas. The biodiversity indices of tree layer indicate mostly medium values with a decreasing tendency (to 22.4%). Relationship between spatial pattern of trees without dieback symptoms and infected trees was positive at small distances (to 7 m) or random. In terms of preventive silvicultural practices, strong systematic thinning is recommended to maintain the vitality of ash stands.

Iberian temperate forests are distributed along the boundary between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean biogeographical regions, and represent the south-western range edges of diverse European broadleaved deciduous tree species. Trees growing at the boundary between Atlantic and Mediterranean biomes suffer from different stresses, including increasing moisture deficit which has been identified as one of the main limitations for growth. In this work, dendrochronological techniques were employed to characterize the radial growth of Acer campestre L., Fagus sylvatica L., Fraxinus excelsior L., and Quercus robur L. in a mixed forest in northern Spain, and examine its relationships with local climate near their south-western range edges. Acer and Fagus tree-ring chronologies showed the highest common signal and the strongest responses to climate. Positive effects of precipitation, especially in the previous December and current summer, were relevant for growth of all species. Only Acer growth showed a detrimental effect of maximum diurnal temperatures in the previous autumn and current summer, while Fraxinus and Quercus growth was benefited by above-average winter temperatures. Cloud cover strongly improved the radial growth of all species, probably because cloudy conditions mitigate the detrimental effects of summer water depletion and low winter temperatures. The beneficial effects of precipitation and cloudiness on tree growth were temporally unstable and have become significant generally since the 1970s, suggesting that rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall shape radial growth-climate relationships of broadleaved deciduous trees near their southern range edges.

Paper presents the results of the research performed in years 2000−2008 on the occurrence of Chalara fraxinea fungus on ashes with dieback symptoms. Abundance of that species was observed on ashes in all analysed forest districts and national parks. Different frequency of infection of various Fraxinus excelsior organs and tissues was pointed out.

Ash is an important component of European forest ecosystems. In recent years the stability of the species has been threatened by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus (T. Kowalski) Baral, Queloz & Hosoya 2014 (anamorph Chalara fraxinea). Infested stands die out dynamically, and forest management does not have the seeds to restore future populations. Seed orchards may be a suitable place, where the seed can be obtained, and through which the results of immunological selection can be implemented. To reduce the infestation of seed orchards by H. fraxineus, autumn leaves that are the source of inoculum can be removed. Hence, the main aim of the study was to assess the impact of the removal of fallen leaves on the health status of clonal seed orchard of ash. The studied seed orchard is located in the Łomża Forest District (N 22.06, E 53.31), observations were made on 237 strains of 31 clones of parents. The health of ash trees based on the defoliation of crowns was assessed in August, in years 2018−2019. In order to reduce the source of H. fraxineus inoculum in the next vegetation season, an agrotechnical procedure was carried out on the orchard site to completely remove fallen ash leaves. ANOVA was used to determine the effect of this procedure on the health of ash crowns. A significant reduction in the level of defoliation (F=12.89) was demonstrated over the years of observation. The reaction of individual clones to the procedure was not uniform. The best result was obtained for clones with low and stable defoliation levels in strains. This result confirms that systematic application of agrotechnical treatment has a beneficial effect on the health and regeneration capabilities of selected clones. This result is as expected and shows the potential to carry out immunological selection of ash.

The concentration of Cd and Pb in leaves/needles, twigs, seeds and fruit coverings of: horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.), yew-tree (Taxus baccata L.), European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), and in the soil at the base of the same trees was investigated. The ability of metal accumulation was determined in all investigated tree species as well as different partitioning in examined plant tissues. The lowest Pb concentration was found in fruit parts of all tree species: in seeds or fruit covering. The lowest Cd concentration in unpolluted regions was determined in leaves/needles or twigs. The highest Cd and Pb concentration in investigated tissues depends on the species and the pollution level of the place where plants were growing. The obtained results could be used to determine the most suitable organs for Pb and Cd biomonitoring in the environment.
Oznaczono stężenie Cd i Pb w liściach, pędach, nasionach oraz częoeci płonej owocu trzech gatunków drzew popularnie nasadzanych w miastach: kasztanowcu zwyczajnym (Aesculus hippocastanum L.), cisie pospolitym (Taxus baccata L.) i jesionie wyniosłym (Fraxinus excelsior L.) oraz w materiale glebowym zebranym pod wybranymi osobnikami. Stwierdzono zdolność do akumulacji metali przez badane gatunki oraz zróżnicowane stężenie metali w poszczególnych organach. Najniższe stężenie Pb oznaczono u wszystkich trzech badanych gatunków w częściach owocu – nasionach lub części płonej, w przypadku Cd dla drzew z rejonów stosunkowo słabo zanieczyszczonych niższe zawartości kadmu notowano w liściach/szpilkach lub pędach. Organy o najwyższym stopniu koncentracji Cd i Pb w tkankach różnią się w zależności od gatunku drzewa, badanego metalu oraz stopnia zanieczyszczenia środowiska, z którego pobierano próbki. Uzyskane dane mogą posłużyć do wytypowania organów przydatnych w biomonitoringu kadmu i ołowiu w środowisku.

Ash dieback caused by an alien, invasive fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is a serious disease of European ash species in many parts in Europe. In Poland, the disease was recorded in the beginning of the 1990s. This study was performed in 2016–2017 with the aim to identify fungi isolated from ash shoots showing dieback symptoms in the Wolica Nature Reserve in Poland, as well as from shoots of two years-old ash seedlings inoculated with H. fraxineus in the greenhouse. The most frequently isolated fungi from shoots of common ash (associated with the pathogenic fungus H. fraxineus) were identified on the basis of sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1) of fungal rDNA. In total, 19 fungal taxa were identified for ash shoots as follows: H. fraxineus, Fusarium avenaceum, Alternaria spp., Phomopsis oblonga, Diplodia mutila and other Phomopsis spp. The pathogen H. fraxineus was not found for all the shoots samples; one year after inoculation the aforementioned fungi and other species as: Alternaria alternata, Bionectria ochroleuca, Epicoccum nigrum, F. acuminatum, F. avenaceum, and Paraphaesphaeria neglecta were identified in inoculation point, as well as H. fraxineus. The same quantitative and qualitative changes of organisms were observed in the case of artificially colonised ash seedlings in the greenhouse, as well as in the shoots of adult ash trees in the forest.

In ash internodes isolated from vertical stems during winter dormancy, cambial activity was stimulated by applying an aqueous solution of auxin to the apical end and water to the basal end. The internodes maintained nearly horizontally produced cambial callus at the apical cut surface with more callus on the upper half although both halves were in contact with the same concentration of auxin. A differential response to auxin of the cambium in the upper and lower halves of the horizontally oriented internodes is postulated.

For several years, Poland has been facing the dieback of ash stands. The paper describes this phenomenon on the example of stands in the Mircze Forest District situated in the eastern regions of the country. The damage to these stands was assessed using a „stand method” that distinguishes three variants based on crown defoliation, vitality and synthetic index of tree damage being a combination of the first two criteria. Study results confirmed the poor health condition of ash stands in the Mircze Forest District.
