Opis:
The term «representation» in Ukrainian political science and social philosophy is used only in relation to interest (interest representation means their presentation) and is one of the stages of its development. This concept occupies important place and has a long history of use in West political science. The term «representation» was already used in Roman law, in scientific discourse; it appeared in the writings of medieval theologians. Marsilius of Padua proposed the conception of people whose political representatives and executor of their will serve the elected officials. French thinkers Jean- Jacques Rousseau and Charles-Louis Montesquieu examined the representation in the context of popular sovereignty. The theory of political representation is developed with the beginning of the distribution in Europe of representative form of government, during the French Revolution. In the western scientific tradition classical representation is understood as a group of people chosen by elections, acting on behalf of another group (primarily people but also the territorial or ethnic community) institutionalized in government. The most common understanding of political representation is the parliament, but often political representation is understood as the electoral process. Meaningful side of the concept is ambiguous in various sciences, and even within a single scientific discipline. When defining the meaning of «political representation» competence approach is used, according to which representation is treated as a legal jurisdiction that allows the state to make a decision. Representation can also be understood as the right to unilateral government. Within the so-called sociological approach attention is paid not only to the chosen way of representative, but to the similarity of the representative to represent. The relationship between the representative and represented is constitutive feature of representation. The main mechanism of coordination and the will of the sovereign representative of the elections is a subsidiary of the institutions that articulate public opinion, especially political parties. Thus, the concept of «political representation» can be understood as a political institution that provides representation of a group of people (especially parliament); a state in which representative reflects the composition of society (a representative); compliance action representative expectations represented (legitimacy). The concept can also be understood as a process of obtaining right of representation, and the process of presenting someone in the political sphere. Choosing between existing interpretations of concepts we can make our own based on the Ukrainian scenario and interpret it as the phenomenon of presenting the subject in the political sphere. Political representation should also be understood as a principle of representation one entity by another entity, between which there is a connection with the direct absence represented in the political sphere. The author proposes to move away from the classical Western understanding of representative only as a representative body presenting the sovereign and proposes to include in the range of political representatives of all subjects receiving the mandate for representation of society or groups. The author believes that the subject of the representation is not only the people but also a smaller social group - ethnic, demographic or territorial, an individual can be represented in the political sphere. The scope (volume) of the subject representation can also vary; it can be understood wider concerning the political system, or narrower – concerning the part of political system: state, part of the state (Parliament), executive body. The nature and type of connection between the represented and representatives, mechanism of its coordination; method of representation mandate, and other phenomena related to political representation, depend on the nature of democracy. Acts of political representation relationship with the model of a political system that outlines the structure of institutions engaged in political representation sets the ratio between them regarding the scope of representation.

Opis:
The paper offers such description of some imperative-like sentence types in potential well-formed Hungarian utterances which includes a parallel representation of the linguistically encoded intensional profiles of the sentence types and actual information states in potential interlocutors’ minds. In our representational dynamic pragmasemantics framework ReALIS, we demonstrate the intensional profiles of the five basic and two “fine-tuned” sentence types as members of a system enabling addressers’ of utterances to express their beliefs, desires and intentions concerning the propositional content of the given utterances as well as the addressees’ and other people’s certain beliefs, desires and intentions (concerning the propositional content, too, or each other’s thoughts). We also provide “case studies” in which actual beliefs, desires and intentions in potential interlocutors’ minds are compared to the linguistically encoded intensional profiles of Hungarian imperative-like sentence types. In this context, the listener’s task is to calculate the speaker’s intentions (and hidden motives) on the basis of the mismatches that this comparison reveals. The paper concludes with an insight into our attempts to model the mind of individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This latter subproject is relevant since our framework provides solutions to pragmaticosemantic phenomena “at the cost” of undertaking the complex task of actually representing the structure of the human mind itself – which is not impossible but requires an adequate decision of the level of abstraction and the components to be used.

Opis:
In her novels, Ananda Devi has always known how to immerse us in texts ennobled by local paintings where matrix India appears through the representation of a Cosmogonic universe dominated by magico-spiritual symbolism. Certain homogeneous interpretations, the fruit of historical constructions, obscure, even sometimes neglect, the deeply rooted heterogeneity of Indian traditions in Mauritius. This “bipolar contrast” (Sen, 2007), the sum of imaginary splices and cultural inter-fusion, nevertheless constitutes the humus of the Mauritian identity built over the course of colonial history. The author then illustrated herself through her writings as a major figure in this form of binary representation of the Mauritian universe. Our study aims at revealing the imaginary amalgams that circulate in Devis texts, starting from forms of discourse and knowledge surreptitiously disseminated in motifs such as the “sari” and “the hair”. By relying on an ethnocritical analysis grid, we will show how the Devi’s ethnotexts” (Motsch, 2000), manage by a meiotic effect, to shape a “new humanism” at the antipodes of “orientalist representations” (Said, 1978) and ethnocentric of India as seen by the West.

Opis:
The article looks into the changing on-screen treatment of Polish immigrant characters living on ‘the Paris pavement’. The corpus of film productions under discussion includes Roman Polański’s The Tenant (1976), Peter Kassovitz’s Mariage blanc (1986), Costa Gavras’s La petite apocalypse (1993), Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Trois couleurs: Blanc (1994), Paweł Pawlikowski’s The Woman in the Fifth (2011) and Małgorzata Szumowska’s Elles (2011). As a comparative analysis of the films involved indicates, both the immigrant characters and the urban space associated with them are subject to gradual changes (although some remarkable spatial motifs, such as the balcony and the roof, make their appearance both in the older and the newer productions). If the earlier films tend to focus on the – often geopolitically connoted – marginalization and degradation of male (anti)heroes in the city’s historical center (or its immediate vicinity), then the more recent films shift focus to the urban periphery, where the Polish characters become part of what Dina Iordanova has called the ‘metropolitan multicultural margins’, along with other, economically underprivileged newcomers from various parts of the (postcolonial and post-Communist) world.

Opis:
It is still common for video games to be classified as a predominantly male pastime. Five years after GamerGate, women and non-binary people still meet with the harassment, sexism, and aggressive behavior (Fox and Tang 2017). On the other hand those games that target women specifically - sometimes called “pink games” - mostly include stereotypes, concentrating their themes around chores, cooking, and fashion. Furthermore, in mainstream games, the male representation of the main characters still overshadows the number of female playable characters. While the non-binary and transgender characters are hardly ever present, women characters are often pigeonholed as a narrative tool, mostly as a trope of “damsel in distress”, victim whose death is to be avenged, or the heterosexual love interest (Ivory 2006, Beck at al. 2012, Huntemann 2014). The parallels can be drawn between the over-sexualization of the playable action protagonists in digital games (Behm-Morawitz and Mastro 2009) and the disagreement to overt expressions of female masculinity in the society (Halberstam 1998). Drawing on Halberstam’s work and I will offer an analysis of Fetch, a protagonist of Infamous First Light (2014) - the standalone additional content to a series of video games developed by Sucker Punch Productions.

This paper is an attempt to answer the question, what is exactly represented by our thoughts or language expressions. At the beginning, the article presents the main philosophical problems regarding the understanding of the nature of the subject of reference of such representations as names or descriptions. Is the name directly referred to the real object or rather to the content of thought? What about cases when the name cannot be referred to the real object? What is the relation between the intentional subject connected with every name (or description) and the external object to which only some names can be referred to, and which one is prior to the constitution of representation? The idea to understand the subject of mental or language representations as a complex structure which has a relational nature is the solution proposed in this paper. This structure is constituted by cognition and ties internal elements of a given representation such as the content with the elements which are external with regard to this given representation. This structure reflects such elements as the content of representation, the way in which this content is given, the correlate of the content and its mode of existence as well as additional systemic information coordinated with given representation. Some consequences of this proposal are discussed at the end of the article. It is explained how the differentiation of the elements of this structure can lead to different types of reference. The basis to understand the issue in question is the relation between internal and external object of reference. It can be interpreted (as is suggested in the paper) as a connection between internal elements of the described structure.

Opis:
To achieve enhanced accuracy of fabric representation and defect detection, an innovative approach using a sparse dictionary with small patches was used for fabric texture characterisation. The effectiveness of the algorithm proposed was tested through comprehensive characterisation by studying eight weave patterns: plain, twill, weft satin, warp satin, basket, honeycomb, compound twill, and diamond twill and detecting fabric defects. Firstly, the main parameters such as dictionary size, patch size, and cardinality T were optimised, and then 40 defect-free fabric samples were characterised by the algorithm proposed. Subsequently, the Impact of the weave pattern was investigated based on the representation result and texture structure. Finally, defective fabrics were detected. The algorithm proposed is an alternative simple and scalable method to characterise fabric texture and detect textile defects in a single step without extracting features or prior information.

Opis:
The focus of my reflections on hermeneutics and the humanities is the short story or comic tale by Anton Chekhov entitled “The Siren” (1887) where we encounter two irreconcilable conceptions of representation; the story contains within it a philosophical aporia, but makes no attempt one way or another to resolve it. I believe that the non-metaphysical “adhesion” of this aporia is precisely its humour. Is such a humorous hermeneutics of uncertainty (of oneself) or such a comic approach to what we call the humanities, which is not sceptical because it to a certain extent a priori affirms the world as well as one’s own imperfection, at all possible? If I understand Chekhov correctly, then he confronts us with the problem of the uinavoidability of precisely this “impossible” creation of the humanities.

This paper presents the results of research, conducted by students of the Institute of Pedagogy at Gdansk University under the supervision of Wojciech Siegień. Initially we were focused on the study of the mental representation of relations between parents and children. During the analysis of collected interviews with parents we found certain parts of interviews that we could not understand and interpret. This prompted us to carry out theoretical research on the broadly defined topic of incest. Using developed intellectual instruments we have analyzed parts of the collected interviews. In the paper we present those parts as examples of something that we called a “gray area” of parents/ children relations that is situated beyond the usual proximity within the family.

The author presents the proposal for a map as a model based on the current concepts in the philosophy of science. It is the attempt to define a map within the general theory of the model - in its ontolo gical, semantical, and epistemological aspect. Treating a map as a model of reality boils down to specifying several characteristics determining its character. The article primarily aims at broadening the discussion on what a map is and what defines it as a model of reality. A new definition has been proposed in efect of the deliberations based on the analysis of models' typology in the sphere of philosophy.
