Polishness in Komarowszczyzna and its surroundings: history and the present dayThe direct reason for writing this article was a reflection that came to my mind during the fieldwork in July/August 2012, which took place in the north-west part of Belarus, in Miadziolski region of Mińsk district. The issue of Polishness in the researched area has been presented from two perspectives: historical and modern. The former predicts appealing to the memory of pre-war generation, while the latter would entail appealing to the current situation of Polishness in Komarowszczyzna and neighbouring villages, which is shaped by the middle generation (born after WWII) and the young people (born in 1970–1990). A comparative analysis of statements of representatives of these three generations has shown that the attitude towards Polishness has changed significantly. From the perspective of the pre-war and partly of the post-war generation, Polishness (i.e. the sense of Polishness) is on the decline. Nevertheless, it is impossible to state that young people renounce their roots or oppose Polishness. They only draw attention to the need of different actions, searching for new possibilities of ‘protecting’ Polishness.

Opis:
For the residents of Cieszyn Silesia, especially Czech, the establishment of national boundaries along the course of the Olza River in 1920, meant that they had to form a new picture of the world and determine their own place in the community, which also had to be redefined. For Zaolzie residents, the process of constructing their own identity depends on mechanisms of competition, negotiation and power (media, education and administration). It also is a consequence of the recognition of the boundary as something natural and “ever” existent. The clash of different self-identifications is seen on the symbolic level, especially linguistic.

Opis:
The article addresses the issue of changes that take place in the life of a physically disabled person, which is caused by his/her engagement in sport activity. In the article I make an attempt to prove that practicing sport through body work may provide conditions for self-discovery of a person with physical disability, and for transformations in perceiving oneself. At the same time, I try to demonstrate that sport practiced by the disabled supports changes of the manner, in which they are perceived by able bodied persons, effectively leveling such phenomena as exclusion or social marginalization. The qualitative data used in the research were collected through an in-depth free interview and observation conducted among the disabled who practice sport. The analysis and interpretation of research are of ethnographic character and are based on the procedures of the grounded theory.

Opis:
It is a special challenge for an individual to be the hero of his/her own life in the social conditions of reflexive modernisation. Autobiographies are not only descriptions of what happened during the life course, but they also reflect individual capacity to construct cultural identities in reflexive and reflective ways. To reflect on one’s own success, personal gains and losses have to be compared with the competitive capacities of other community members of the hierarchically structured society. Reflexive capacity is the demand to become a conscious self and culturally identified member of a social group. Selfidentity is reconstructed and coped with in light of meaningful others during certain transition periods in the life course. Life-political meaningfulness is checked by overcoming personal difficulties in order to manage life-challenges further. Self-respect gives the resources needed for overcoming alienating experiences, for controlling the risk of social exclusion and for mastering one's own life successfully. Narrative identification of self tends to produce life-heroes. But the problem considered relevant here starts from reflecting altruism with reflexive monitoring of the self. The question is whether heroic episodes of life can be narrated so that heroic everyday deeds are emphasised in autobiographies. Or is everyday heroism present only in precarious moments which escape ego-centrism because this kind of heroism can be placed only at the social margin, where surviving a difficult situation obliges one to turn unselfishly toward another?

Opis:
Despite representing the second-largest immigrant group in Germany, Polish immigrants and their descendants are understudied and have often been described as ‘invisible’ as they have a reputation of ‘becoming German’ quickly and unproblematically. Challenging this notion and considering the prevalence of anti-Eastern European racism in the German context, this study analyses interviews with 22 highly educated Germans of Polish descent, focusing on how interviewees talked about being German and/or Polish and their experiences of stigmatisation and discrimination, in both their childhood and teenage years and as adults. In so doing, the study contributes to the literature on how the ethnic and national identities of white descendants of immigrants are related to experiences of exclusion. Specifically, some interviewees (Type 1) said that they felt only German (and not Polish) and denied experiencing stigmatisation or discrimination in their present lives. Other interviewees (Type 2) embraced a symbolic Polish ethnicity while framing exclusionary experiences as a thing of the past. Type 3 interviewees reported a process of re-ethnicisation, arguably enabled by the absence of exclusionary experiences in their present lives. Finally, there were interviewees (Type 4) who reported embracing their Polish identity, which led to experiences of stigmatisation in certain contexts.

Opis:
Ancient Chinese history holds a quality which has syncretized traditional thought with its cultural wealth unified of mystical and mythological figures in the background. Such that classical documents, which had begun to be written before Common Era, has directly influenced the political regime, education system and status of society in China. One of the most prominent features of these works is to propound collective knowledge about perception of cosmology, attitudes to earthiness, community standards, policy and morality. Among Five Classics works of these masterpieces of Chinese philosophy, Book of Changes which stands closest to metaphysical narrative, mainly consists of the texts about prophecy. While this piece of work had been referred as a divination guide in Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC), it turned into a cosmological text that included a range of philosophical commentary during Warring States Period (475-221 BC). The mainstay of this remarkable change is the direct correlation of all the concepts and terms that characterize the worldly beyond along with the relevant text, especially yin-yang dualism, which symbolizes an extraordinary harmony in early Chinese thought. Traditional idea suggests reciprocity in which heaven, earth and man are interconnected to maintain natural order. However, the superiority attributed to human beings also brings compulsive responsibilities to idealize a compatible society. This paper aims to discuss influences of cosmological and anthropological items on human behaviors explained in prescriptive perspective.

The article is an attempt to examine prose of younger generations after 1989 – in the era of globalization and consumption, on the one hand, and in the period when criterion of “Polishness” ceased to be the main way of selfidentification, on the second – in the spatial aspect. The author of the text analyses main psychologically‑artistic types of the experience of space as identity factor.

Opis:
The present study explores the problem of the concepts of hybridity, dual consciousness, and, accordingly, self-identification and its multidimensional manifestations in Lahiri’s work Namesake. Notably, the writer delves deeply into the cultural encounters of diasporic and colonial subjects in his movement between the binary opposite of East and West. Based on the opinions of post-colonial researchers such as Yang, Baba, and others, hybridity and dual consciousness appear to be a prototype of the consequences of the experience of displacement and social exclusion. Consequently, Gogol’s problem is characteristic of the coexistence of the Eastern diaspora and colonised peoples with other Western peoples. This article concludes that hybridity, dual consciousness and the search for identity are fundamental concepts in post-colonial literature, representing a boundary model between the Western and non-Western worlds.

Opis:
This paper is based on the first analysis of the 25 narrative interviews collected from March to November 2018 in small local communities in the Lower Silesia Region. All narrators belong to the families that were transferred from the former Yugoslavia in 1946 to the western lands which were incorporated to Poland. The socio-cultural conditions are significant for local development, so I present some features of localism after 1989 when the state transformation processes started. Next, I discuss the narrators’ self-identity dilemmas and make an attempt to conceptualize “migrating biography” as one of the features of living in a postmodern world. The aim of the whole project, but not described in this article, is to reveal the intergenerational adult learning processes seen from the insider’s perspective, as well as to describe such lives in a psychosocial and cultural context.
