Opis:
Bark is used for several therapeutic purposes by traditional knowledge from ancient time. The present study was attempted to digitize the bark morphology by image based database for common tree species and compilation of recent research works by literature survey to know potent phyto- constituents present in the bark of tree species and their ability in disease prevention. In conclusion, present study of digital database on bark morphology may help easy detection of common tree species in biodiversity research work. In the present study, also the compilation of bark phytochemicals and their therapeutic efficiencies may also serve a databank as ready references in future pharmacological researches.

Opis:
The issue of the enlargement of the entrance to the Bark Hall of the Djeser-akhet temple of Tuthmosis III at Deir el-Bahari was a major focus for the Polish restoration mission from the start. The widening of the passage was noted early on in the research and new data was forthcoming with every successive field season as the decoration of the entrance wall on either side of the Hypostyle Hall and of the Bark Hall was reconstructed. More detailed information continued to add to the recreation of the process of how and when these changes were introduced, as discussed by the author in earlier articles. Further fragments of relief decoration identified in recent years as originating from the cut sections of the walls have offered new data to supplement the author’s view, being at the same time a significant source of information on the original decoration predating the destruction phase in the Amarna period.

Opis:
Environmentally friendly new wood preservative surface materials were developed to protect the wood surface against outdoor conditions. The durability performance of different types of waterborne acrylic resin with bark extract used as coatings on a wood surface exposed to outdoor conditions was investigated. Scots pine and Oriental beech surfaces were coated with three different waterborne acrylic resin coatings. Bark extracts from two different trees (fir and black pine) and a commercial UV absorber were used in the acrylic resin coating formulations. The durability of the coatings containing these bark extracts were compared with that of the coating with a commercial UV absorber. The wood samples coated with the test and control coatings were exposed to the QUV test in laboratory conditions. The surface colour and roughness changes on the wood samples coated with the test coatings and exposed to the accelerated weathering test were compared with the control samples. Microscopic images were taken, and the coating thicknesses of the control and test samples prepared before the outdoor test were determined. The results showed that the protective effect of the acrylic coating system containing fir bark extracts in QUV test conditions over 2016 h was similar to that of the coating containing commercial UV absorbers. However, while the fir bark extract’s antioxidant effect positively affected the beech wood to increase durability in outdoor conditions, it had a lower preservative effect on the pine wood.

Opis:
Suitability of apple tree bark as a natural source for cotton dyeing. The study of dyeing cotton fabric with apple bark extract with the use of mortars - inorganic aluminum, tin, iron and copper salts, moreover oxalic acid and without mortar. The color of the fabric was determined using the CIE L*a*b* system. The result was a yellow color of varying shades, ranging from lemon to warm, intense yellow. In the case of iron and copper, a significantly different color was obtained, dark khaki and rusty brown respectively. Color fastness tests were carried out using hot water, mineral acid, mild and hot washing, dry cleaning and natural exposure to sunlight. It has been found to have excellent resistance to dry cleaning and good to a gentle wash. Dyed fabric showed the weakest resistance to sunlight and to mineral acid.
Przydatność kory jabłoni jako naturalnego surowca do barwienia bawełny. Przeprowadzono badanie barwienia tkaniny bawełnianej ekstraktem z kory jabłoni z zastosowaniem zapraw - soli nieorganicznych glinu, cyny, żelaza i miedzi, ponadto kwasu szczawiowego oraz bez zaprawy. Barwa tkaniny oznaczana była w systemie CIE L*a*b*. Uzyskano żółte zabarwienie o różnym odcieniu, od cytrynowego do ciepłej, intensywnej żółtej. W przypadku żelaza i miedzi uzyskano zdecydowanie odmienną barwę, ciemny khaki i rdzawo brązowy odpowiednio.

Opis:
The suitability of Eucalyptus grandis bark and root for the pulp and paper industry was investigated. The bark of E. grandis was cooked using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) in the kraft process, while the root of E. grandis was cooked using the soda-anthraquinone (AQ) process. Four different charges (0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7%) of NaBH 4 and AQ used as catalysts were added to the cooking liquor used in the processes. The chemical, mechanical and optical properties of the produced pulps were investigated and characterized. The yields, viscosity values, kappa numbers, as well as the brightness, tensile, burst and tear indices of the pulps were determined. The yield (RP: 39.1%, BP: 36.8%), viscosity value (RP: 897 cm 3/g, BP: 650 cm 3/g) and the kappa numbers (RP: 90, BP: 50) of the pulps produced from the root (RP) were higher than those of the pulps produced from bark (BP). The catalysts generally affected all the pulp properties, improving the properties of BP and RP. It was concluded that E. grandis bark and root can be suitable for the pulp and paper industry.

Opis:
Occurrence of pathogens in four important forest pest insect species, Ips typographus, Ips sexdentatus, Hylobius abietis and Hylobius pinastri, from Austria, Poland and France was investigated in 2006–2008. Insects were collected from 46 sampling sites. In total 5,634 living adult beetles were dissected. Some dead adults and some very few dead larvae were inspected for fungal infection. Eight pathogen species (Ips typographus entomopoxvirus, Gregarina typographi, Mattesia sp.,Chytridiopsis typographi, Unikaryon montanum, Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria caledonica and Isaria farinosa) were found in I. typographus from the three countries. Four pathogen species were found in I. sexdentatus from Austria and France (Gregarina cf. typographi, Metschnikowia cf. typographi, B. bassiana and B. caledonica). Five pathogen species were found in H. abietis from Austria and Poland (Gregarina hylobii, Ophryocystis hylobii, Nosema hylobii, B. bassiana and B. brongniartii) and two in H. pinastri from Poland (G. hylobii and O. hylobii). Some of the pathogen species were found for the first time in one of the three countries or are reported for the first time in one of the investigated beetle species. Differences in occurrence and geographical distribution of these pathogens are discussed with regard to their respective apparent host spectrum and possible ecological requirements.
