    X-ray fluorescence analyses of sixty-one K-bentonite samples from the Ludlow-Pridoli sections of western Ukraine and Moldova were used for correlation and source magma interpretation. The study reveals that source magmas of K-bentonites were low-temperature (~720oC) rhyolites indicating melting of continental crust during subduction of a hydrated oceanic plate. Volcanic sources were probably located within the developing Scythian Platform embracing the southeastern margin of the East European Platform. The present study demonstrates the potential of using immobile elements for correlating volcanic ash layers between different sections.

    Pyrolysis is potentially an effective treatment of oily sludge for oil recovery, and the addition of a catalyst is expected to affect its pyrolysis behavior. In the present study, Fe/Al-pillared bentonite with various Fe/Al ratios as pyrolysis catalyst is prepared and characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption, and NH3-TPD. The integration of Al and Fe in the bentonite interlayers to form pillared clay is evidenced by increase in the basal spacing. As a result, a critical ratio of Fe/Al exists in the Fe/Al-pillared bentonite catalytic pyrolysis for oil recovery from the sludge. The oil yield increases with respect to increase in Fe/Al ratio of catalysts, then decreases with further increasing of Fe/Al ratio. The optimum oil yield using 2.0 wt% of Fe/Al 0.5-pillared bentonite as catalyst attains to 52.46% compared to 29.23% without catalyst addition in the present study. In addition, the addition of Fe/Al-pillared bentonite catalyst also improves the quality of pyrolysis-produced oil and promotes the formation of CH4. Fe/Al-pillared bentonite provides acid center in the inner surface, which is beneficial to the cracking reaction of oil molecules in pyrolysis process. The present work implies that Fe/Al-pillared bentonite as addictive holds great potential in industrial pyrolysis of oily sludge.

    Sixteen bentonite layers of Eocene–Oligocene age were sampled at thirteen sites in accretionary-wedge turbidite sequences, in the three innermost nappes of the Western Outer Carpathians. K-Ar dating was carried out for five of these layers to obtain the maximum burial ages. All of the ages obtained are older than the stratigraphic ages of the host strata. This relationship is due to significant contamination of the bentonites with non-authigenic minerals. This contamination resulted from rapid sedimentation during synsedimentary folding, which is a common feature in accretionary wedges. It follows that the K-Ar dating of bentonite layers in the turbidite sequences of accretionary wedges should be largely restricted to the very distal facies of turbidites or to pelitic intercalations within the turbidites.

    Bentonity i inne surowce smektytowe są szeroko stosowane w wielu gałęziach przemysłu. Autorzy niniejszej pracy dokonali analizy przydatności bentonitowych granulatów pęczniejących w celu ich użycia jako uszczelnień w mobilnych zaporach przeciwpowodziowych. Do tego celu dokonano analizy porównawczej parametrów pęcznienia i uziarnienia trzech dostępnych na rynku granulatów a następnie wykonano próbę makroskopową pęcznienia na specjalnie do tego celu przygotowanym stanowisku badawczym. Wykonane badania wykazały, że nie tylko udział składnika pęczniejącego – smektytu – znacząco wpływa na doszczelnianie układu, ale determinuje go przede wszystkim rozkład wielkości granul i rodzaj smektytu.
    Bentonites and other smectite raw materials are widely used in many industries. The authors of the study analyzed the suitability of swelling granulates for their use as a seals in mobile flood barriers. For this purpose, a comparative analysis of the swelling and granulation parameters of three samples available on the market was performed. This results was compared with a macroscopic swelling test, which was realized on the specially prepared test stand. The carried out research shows that not only the content of the swelling minerals – mainly smectite – affect on the sealing of the system, but also they are determine by granules size distribution and the type of smectite.

    In this work, an assessment and comparison of the quality of selected bentonites and bentonite mixtures was made. The samples consisted of available foundry materials used for bonding green sands. Determining the homogeneity degree and specific surface area of the grains allowed us to compare the examined materials and determine their influence on other parameters. On the basis of a thermal analysis of the bentonites or bentonite mixtures, the changes occurring in the sample during its heating were determined. Determining the potential for ion exchange and montmorillonite content enabled us to assess the binding properties of the materials. The preparation of six green sands with different bentonites or bentonite mixtures gave us the opportunity to assess the changes in apparent density, permeability, compressive strength and friability as a function of humidity, and the impact of different materials on the mentioned parameters. Their charts were analyzed, and the molding sand with the addition of bentonite or a bentonite mixture was selected for which these parameters are favorable. On this basis, the best-presented binding material was assessed and selected.

    In this work the influence of modified bentonites on the process of epoxy crosslinking with triethylenetetramine (TETA) was investigated. Bentonites (BS) modified with quaternary phosphonium (QPS) and ammonium (QAS) salts were used as a nanofiller in the epoxy matrix (EP) in the amounts of 1 and 3 wt %. Gel time of the compositions was investigated using rotational rheometer at 30, 45 and 60 °C and activation energies of the compositions were determined. The storage G’ and loss G” moduli crossover criterion was used to determine the nanocomposites gel time variation. On the basis of the obtained results, it was found that the addition of modified aluminosilicates decreased the gel time of epoxy compositions at 30 and 45 °C, while at 60 °C it increased compared to unmodified epoxy resin. The obtained results indicate that the amount of modified aluminosilicate and the type of salt influence the reactivity of epoxy compositions. Among the tested systems, the most reactive was the composition of EP+3%BSQPS1, because the gel time at 30 °C and activation energy decreased by 1500 s and 8 J/mol, respectively, in relation to the unfilled EP resin. A more catalytic effect was observed in the case of bentonites modified with quaternary phosphonium salts, which may be associated with lower phosphorus electronegativity in relation to nitrogen and a lower viscosity of these systems.
    Zbadano wpływ dodatku modyfikowanych bentonitów na proces sieciowania epoksydów za pomocą trietylenotetraaminy (TETA). Bentonit (BS) modyfikowany czwartorzędowymi solami fosfoniowymi (QPS) lub amoniowymi (QAS) użyto jako nanonapełniacz w osnowie epoksydowej (EP) w ilości 1 oraz 3 % mas. Za pomocą reometru rotacyjnego zbadano czas żelowania kompozycji w temp. 30, 45 i 60 °C, wyznaczono też ich energie aktywacji. Punkt żelowania wyznaczały przecinające się krzywe modułów zachowawczego G’ i stratności G”. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników stwierdzono, że dodatek do żywicy epoksydowej modyfikowanych glinokrzemianów spowodował skrócenie czasu żelowania kompozycji w temp. 30 i 45 °C, natomiast w temp. 60 °C nastąpiło jego wydłużenie w stosunku do czasu żelowania niemodyfikowanej żywicy epoksydowej. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że zarówno ilość dodanego modyfikowanego glinokrzemianu, jak i rodzaj soli użytej do modyfikacji wpływają na reaktywność wytworzonych kompozycji epoksydowych. Spośród badanych układów największą reaktywność wykazywała kompozycja EP+3%BSQPS1; czas żelowania w 30 °C i energia aktywacji zmniejszyły się, odpowiednio, o 1500 s i 8 J/mol w stosunku do wartości odpowiadających nienapełnionej żywicy EP. Większy katalityczny efekt zaobserwowano w wypadku bentonitów modyfikowanych solami fosfoniowymi, co może wynikać z mniejszej elektroujemności fosforu niż azotu.

    Publikacja stanowi kontynuację prac nad otrzymywaniem kompozytów na osnowie żywicy fenolowo-formaldehydowej (PF) napełnianej bentonitami modyfikowanymi czwartorzędowymi solami amoniowymi (QAS). Wytworzone kompozyty użyto do przesycania siatek z włókna szklanego o różnym splocie i różnej gramaturze. Oceniano wpływ struktury wzmocnienia (splotu siatki szklanej) na właściwości mechaniczne oraz strukturalne otrzymanych kompozytów, zwłaszcza pod względem ich przydatności do zastosowania w charakterze ściernic. Stwierdzono, że kompozyty na osnowie zawierającej modyfikowane glinokrzemiany wykazują większą wytrzymałość mechaniczną i odporność na ścieranie niż kompozyty na osnowie niemodyfikowanej żywicy fenolowo-formaldehydowej. Na podstawie skaningowej mikroskopii elektronowej (SEM) stwierdzono znacznie lepsze zwilżenie włókien siatek szklanych przesycanych kompozycjami PF z dodatkiem modyfikowanych bentonitów niż przesycanych nienapełnioną żywicą fenolowo-formaldehydową.
    The present study continues research on the application of bentonites modified with quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) to produce composites based on phenol-formaldehyde resin (PF). The as-prepared composites were used for impregnating fiberglass mesh of various weave and weight per unit area. The effect of the reinforcement structure (weave of fiberglass mesh) on the mechanical and structural properties of the obtained composites was investigated, especially in terms of their use as grinding wheels. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the composites with matrices containing modified aluminosilicates were characterized by greater mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, than those with non-modified matrix. On the basis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), much better wetting of glass meshes by bentonite-modified PF compositions was observed when compared to those with unfilled phenol-formaldehyde resin.
