Changes in energy fuel markets, the rise of renewables and the aging of existing coal-fired units are leading to increased popularization of research on potential pathways for restructuring power systems. One proposed concept is the Coal-toNuclear path, which involves the partial use of existing coal-fired power plant infrastructure in favor of the construction of nuclear units, which can reduce investment costs. An additional benefit is the ability to manage the workforce competencies identified within the coal-fired power unit, and which are also required for the effective operation of the nuclear unit. The article considers the possibility of repowering the Kozienice power plant in Poland from the perspective of the availability of water used to cool the power units. Three different nuclear reactor technologies that are potentially being considered for the construction of the first nuclear units in Poland were analyzed. The study showed that the lowest water flows in the Vistula river recorded in 2022, equal to 146 m3 /s, make it impossible to simultaneously cool the nuclear units and ensure sufficiently low water temperatures from an environmental perspective. Nuclear units were shown to require about 1.55−1.67 times more water for cooling than typical coal-fired units.

Agricultural production of most smallholders in Ethiopia is dependent with recurrent rainfall resulted in production variations. Limited input availability and precarious environmental conditions determine smallholders’ decisions on their production and the production efficiencies vary from farmer to farmer. This study was carried out with the aim of analyzing the technical, allocative and economic efficiencies of smallholder farmers in the production of major crops and their determinants in central Ethiopia, Oromia special zone surrounding Addis Ababa. Multistage sampling technique was employed to randomly and proportionally select 386 smallholders from ten PAs. Primary data were collected from smallholders through a semi structured questionnaire using face to face interview. Cross sectional data collected from sampled households in the study area were analyzed using mathematical and econometric methods. Mathematical programming technique selected for this study was Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) using linear programming technique assuming multi-input and multi-outputs were handled. Tobit regression model was regressed against the socioeconomic, demographic, and institutional variables that are expected to affect the technical, allocative and economic efficiencies of sampled households. The results of estimated efficiency scores show the mean technical, allocative and economic efficiencies were 0.75, 0.60 and 0.45 respectively. The mean scores of efficiencies show underutilization of resources and the possibilities of smallholders to increase their agricultural production by 25%, and reduce cost of production by 40% and total cost by 55%. Marital status, level of education, farming experience, access to credit, cooperative membership, access to farming information, and off/non-farm income has positive influence on the technical, allocative and economic efficiencies. While age of the household head, access to training and livestock size has negative relations to efficiencies. Delivery of agricultural inputs and trainings on time by the government is the key policy implication to improve the efficiencies of smallholders.

The efficient recovery of the waste heat from the industrial sector can represent an essential step in global energy saving, with the proper usage of other on-grid power resources available for specific high-energy consumers. A simple, low–cost energy conversion system was tested here to recover a part of the waste heat dissipated by a gasoline engine’s exhaust pipe under the car’s stationary testing mode at temperatures around 80–100°C. The main components of this system were a copper–made thermal collector, a commercial thermoelectric energy generator (TEG) module TEC1–12706 and a pin-fin heat sink under natural air convection cooling. Under the open-circuit test, heat transfer rates between 4.54 W and 5.56 W were evacuated by the heat sink. A DC electronic load RL was connected at the TEG outputs, and voltage values between 0.566 V and 1.242 V were recorded for output power values between 0.03 W and 0.16 W when R,sub>L was modified from 1 Ω to 10 Ω.

The paper deals with increasing processes efficiency at a production line of cylinder heads of engines in a production company operating in the automotive industry. The goal is to achieve improvement and optimization of test processes on a production line. It analyzes options for improving capacity, availability and productivity of processes of an output test by using modern technology available on the market. We have focused on analysis of operation times before and after optimization of test processes at specific production sections. By analyzing measured results we have determined differences in time before and after improvement of the process. We have determined a coefficient of efficiency OEE and by comparing outputs we have confirmed real improvement of the process of the output test of cylinder heads.

We suggest original modifications and extensions of the recently presented methodological developments in ex-post accounting framework in global value chains in order to obtain empirical results both for the analyzed group of ten CEE economies as well as at a country-and-sectorspecific level. The empirical results confirm that the role of the selected CEE economies in transition in creating value added with respect to the total value added in the European Union in the GVC framework was biggest in the cases of agriculture-, wood-products-, metal-production, and travel-and-tourism-related sectors. We also found that, after two decades of transition, the measures of productivity in the examined economies in 2009 were still much lower as compared to the EU average for most of the sectors. Moreover, in the transition period, these indexes were increasing, especially after EU accession. In contrary, after two decades of transition, the measures of capital efficiency in the ten CEE economies in 2009 were comparable to the EU average for most of the sectors. Moreover, during this period, the growth rates of these indexes were, in general, positive. However, their growth rates dropped after EU accession.

In this study, dynamical parameters of the cycloidal gearbox working at the constant angular velocity of the input shaft were investigated in the multibody dynamics 2D model implemented in the Fortran programming language. Time courses of input and output torques and forces acting on the internal and external sleeves have been shown as a function of the contact modelling parameters and backlash. The analysis results in the model implemented in Fortran were compared with the results in the 3D model designed using MSC Adams software. The values of contact forces are similar in both models. However, in the time courses obtained in MSC Adams there are numerical singularities in the form of peaks reaching 500 N for the forces at external sleeves and 400 N for the forces acting at internal sleeves, whereas in the Fortran model, there are fewer singularities and the maximum values of contact forces at internal and external sleeves do not exceed 200 N. The contact damping and discretisation level (the number of discrete contact points on the cycloidal wheels) significantly affect the accuracy of the results. The accuracy of computations improves when contact damping and discretisation are high. The disadvantage of the high discretization is the extended analysis time. High backlash values lead to a rise in contact forces and a decrease in the force acting time. The model implemented in Fortran gives a fast solution and performs well in the gearbox optimisation process. A reduction of cycloidal wheel discretisation to 600 points, which still allows satisfactory analysis, could reduce the solution time to 4 min, corresponding to an analysis time of 0.6 s with an angular velocity of the input shaft of 52.34 rad/s (500 RPM).

In order to deal with undesirable products in models of performance analysis, we need to replace the assumption of free disposability by weak disposability and this assumption has been used to model undesirable products as outputs. The traditional axiom of weak disposability of Shephard (1970) is given in a multiplier form and, in this sense, the level of bad outputs is equal to zero if and only if the level of the desirable outputs is equal to zero. An alternative definition of the weak disposability of outputs in additive form has been proposed. An axiomatic foundation has been introduced to construct a new production technology space in the presence of undesirable outputs. The model is illustrated using real data from 92 coal fired power plants.

In commercially available generation III and III+ PWR (pressurized water reactor) reactors, pressure of steam produced in steam generators varies in a relatively wide range from 5.7 to 7.8 MPa. Therefore, it is important to ask which value of steam pressure should be used for a specific unit, taking into account different location conditions, the size of the power system and conditions of operation with other sources of electricity generation. The paper analyzes the effect of steam pressure at the outlet of a steam generator on the performance of a PWR nuclear power plant by presenting changes in gross and net power and efficiency of the unit for steam pressures in the range of 6.8 to 7.8 MPa. In order to determine losses in the thermal system of the PWR power plant, in particular those caused by flow resistance and live steam throttling between the steam generator and the turbine inlet, results concerning entropy generation in the thermal system of the power plant have been presented. A model of a nuclear power plant was developed using the Ebsilon software and validated based on data concerning the Olkiluoto Unit 3 EPR (evolutionary power reactor) power plant. The calculations in the model were done for design conditions and for a constant thermal power of the steam generator. Under nominal conditions of the Olkiluoto Unit 3 EPR power unit, steam pressure is about 7.8 MPa and the steam dryness fraction is 0.997. The analysis indicates that in the assumed range of live steam pressure the gross power output and efficiency increase by 32 MW and 0.735 percentage point, respectively, and the net power output and efficiency increase by 27.8 MW and 0.638 percentage point, respectively. In the case of all types of commercially available PWR reactors, water pressure in the primary circuit is in the range of 15.5−16.0 MPa. For such pressure, reducing the live steam pressure leads to a reduction in the efficiency of the unit. Although a higher steam pressure increases the efficiency of the system, it is necessary to take into account the limitations resulting from technical and economic criteria as well as operating conditions of the primary circuit, including the necessary DNBR (departure from nucleate boiling ratio) margin. For the above reasons, increasing the live steam pressure above 7.8 MPa (the value used in EPR units that have already been completed) is unjustified, as it is associated with higher costs of the steam generator and the high-pressure part of the turbine.

Nowadays, there is a need for charging electric vehicles (EVs) wirelessly, since it provides a more convenient, reliable, and safer charging option for the EV customers. A wireless charging system using a double-sided LCC compensation topology is proven to be highly efficient; however, the large volume induced by the compensation coils is a drawback. Endocrine links are more useful in transmitting power wirelessly than other links. These links are used in the transmission of low and medium power. In this paper, by analyzing the equivalent circuit of a WPT power transmission system, the optimal value of the inductance was formulated to increase the yield. This can have other applications. In order to neutralize the reactive losses, the series resonance is used in both in primary and secondary sections, among which the lower quantities of series inductors were selected from the initial values to increase the efficiency and power. Furthermore, it is possible to optimize these values using suitable optimization methods. In this study, the PSO algorithm was used for this purpose.
