Opis:
The paper presents a newly designed improvement to the method of solving multi-ship encounter situations. In general, the method combines some of the assumptions of game theory with evolutionary programming and aims to find optimal set of cooperating trajectories of all ships involved in an encounter situation. The improvement presented here is a new way of modelling some of the COLREGS rules. Due to this change, the method is now able to find solutions, which are more compliant with COLREGS, more intuitive and consequently – safer from the navigator’s point of view.

Research objectives, issues or problems: The aim of the research was to ascertain the opinions and efforts of early childhood education teachers in organising children’s encounters with art in museums/galleries. The research question was “what activities do teachers undertake to familiarise students with the art distributed by institutions that provide visual objects of artistic value?” Research methods: The study used a diagnostic survey method with a questionnaire aimed at teachers teaching years 1–3 in primary school. A short description of the context of the presented issue: Museums, galleries and other such institutions are organisational forms of cultural activity and can be an important element of the classes prepared by teachers to create opportunities for pupils to learn about, experience and value works of art. Children’s contact with works of art in institutions providing objects of artistic value not only awakens their interests, but also encourages them to act creatively, develops their perceptiveness, practices their ability to conduct thorough analyses, express reasoned opinions and pose questions and develops their sensitivity and aesthetic taste. Research findings: The results show that although the majority of teachers perceive a very important role of venues promoting art in the process of enriching knowledge and forming attitudes of active consumers among early school-aged children, a large proportion of them still do not sufficiently notice the value and impact of these venues in shaping children’s intellectual interests and personality. Conclusions and/or recommendations: In summary, the teacher, carrying out the tasks set out in the curricula and supported by the institutions and the state (e.g. teacher training, free entry for children, online offers sent to schools and temporary exhibitions aimed at young viewers), can additionally implement and/or complement activities to make museum exhibitions attractive and effective for pupils.

Opis:
This paper presents qualitative research examining to what extent sojourns abroad engage their participants in intercultural interactions and whether or not such experience translates into students’ intercultural growth. The results of the study demonstrated that studying abroad did not provide students with ample opportunities to immerse into the local community and fully discover a new cultural environment. However, students surrounded by local and their fellow international students met foreign cultures, which motivated them to explore and interpret the encountered diversity, and thus equipped them with knowledge about foreign cultures, sensitizing them to cultural diversity. Sometimes such contacts challenged students’ preconceived judgments and stereotypes of specific cultural groups, their ways of thinking, valuing and acting, and resulted, to a lesser or greater extent, in rethinking these, leading to changing attitudes and values. International experiences also stimulated students to self-analyze their own cultural identity, and thereby contributed to their growth in self-awareness in this respect. By offering opportunities for experiencing cultural differences and prompting students to develop coping strategies and to make references to the home culture, the sojourn is thus of significant importance for tertiary students, allowing for fostering their intercultural development to a certain degree.

Opis:
Everyday spaces represent central platforms that provide opportunities for encounters marked by ethnic and cultural diversity, where transformations can be negotiated that rethink living together. The significance of these ‘third places’ has been extensively researched. Yet, some spaces such as public libraries continue to be largely overlooked by geographers. Public libraries also remain under-appreciated within wider society despite their obvious social functions. Central here is that public libraries can be understood as dynamic and ‘lived spaces’ that enable the emergence of transient connections and relationships. Such spaces are increasingly sparse within modern cities. This paper explores the potential of everyday spaces of encounter, specifically public libraries, to facilitate the unfolding of ‘light’ connections and relationships, nurturing more inclusive forms of urban togetherness and belonging in multi-ethnic societies and the significance that people attribute to these often mundane encounters and micro connections. In so doing, this paper combines findings from two research projects that investigate mixed or intercultural encounters in public libraries in Bremen (Germany) and Glasgow (Scotland).

Opis:
The article is an anthropological-ethical analysis concerning the relation between the dialog and the truth in its objective understanding (the truth about personal values) and subjective one (the truth as authenticity/real being). In the course of the considerations existentialist and realist understanding of the relation between the truth, encounter and dialog are presented and their pedagogical implications are pointed to. The truth is understood in its pragmatic dimension as the basis of community and its following aspects are pointed to: authenticity (the condition for the encounter) and the axiological truth (the result of the encounter). „The encounter” and „the dialog” are defined from the perspective of the personalist conception of man. Only in this meaning these two concepts, apart from the cognitive value (learning the truth) have a personalist value, as they are a condition of the development of a person as such. The analysis that is made in the article allows distinguishing the apparent dialog, that is a danger for the person's identity, and the true dialog, that co-constitutes community. Moreover, it is stated that only realist understanding of „authenticity” allows understanding this category as a condition of interpersonal dialog, as it is in such a sense that the truth is not only a subjective (authenticity), but an objective (the truth of the transmitted contents) condition of the interpersonal dialog. Authenticity, on the other hand, is also a condition and a result of the interpersonal bond.

The article presents theoretical concepts and research in the extent of minors - police encounters, paying attention to their confrontational nature. This issue was analysed from three perspectives: environmental, individual and situational. Family and peer groups were described as the basic environmental factors. Age, gender and social background were analysed as typical individual factors. Describing situational context, attention was paid to resistance and injustice as factors leading to intensification of the police intervention. It was emphasized that the confrontational nature of the encounters may lead to the escalation of conflicts, applied sanctions, increase social distance, resistance and labelling process.

Opis:
This paper proposes a modified artificial potential fields (APF) method for collision avoidance at sea. The concept of artificial potentials used herein is derived from fields generated by electric charges. Attractive and repulsive forces are determined, accounting for the positions of an own vessel and a target vessel. The own vessel and its goal are considered as opposite charges. There is an attractive force between them, while the own vessel and target vessels or obstacles are considered as charges with a repulsive force between them. The values of these forces depend on the coefficients of attraction and repulsion. To solve a particular collision situation, the modified method of artificial potential fields is used. Due to the specific nature of the vessels’ movement, additional factors affecting the values of the attraction and repulsive forces are considered, as opposed to solutions used for robots. The main purpose of this article is to present the method for determining the coefficients of the APF method. This method will be used to avoid collisions at sea. From an analysis of factors influencing the execution of the vessel maneuver in a collision situation, a modified method for determining the attraction and repulsion coefficients is proposed. A case study of collision avoidance in a vessel encounter situation is also conducted.

Opis:
The article analyses the ways of communication with pre-school children used by the music teacher which are based on the pattern of generalisation of variation theory and which encourage children to feel, discern and graphically express the qualities of musical sounds and their features while listening to music. The application of the pattern of generalization of variation theory is a new didactic approach in the music education of pre-school children. In this research, the learning study based on variation theory as a phenomenographic approach and a strategy for the lesson study as participatory action research were used. A 3-cycle learning study was conducted in 3 pre-school education groups; the study was conducted by 3 music teachers and a researcher; a total of 65 five- to six-year-old children participated in the research. The learning study provides opportunities to model ways of communication used by the music teacher as a mediator between the child and the music he/she listens to, encouraging children to feel, understand and discern the critical aspect of the learning object – high musical sounds – and its features – short, long, strong high musical sounds. When applying the pattern of generalization of variation theory, children can abstract the invariable pitch of musical sounds as a quality of musical sounds in the context of other variable qualities. The Critical Incident Technique was used to analyse the research data. The qualitative research highlighted three empirically substantiated groups of ways of communication used by the music teacher which are based on the pattern of generalisation of variation theory: ways of communication used by the music teacher that encourage children to feel, understand, discern and graphically express the critical aspect of the invariable learning object and its features in creating the context for listening to music (the first group), while listening to music (the second group) and after listening to music (the third group).

In the years 2017–2021, the school exchange project Nachbarsprache & buurcultuur was carried out in the German-Dutch border region and funded by the EU as an Interreg Va-project. During the entire project period, the exchanges that took place were critically monitored. In this article, we (as project managers from the Dutch side) go into the available scientific findings and basic requirements for ‘successful’ encounters in school exchanges, as well as selected critical results from the monitoring of the project Nachbarsprache & buurcultuur for the areas of pluricultural or culture-reflective and multilingual learning in exchanges.
