Opis:
This study explored the effect of computer-mediated corrective feedback on the 10th grade EFL students’ performance in the writing skill. Seventy-two 10th grade female students at Al Hammra secondary school for girls situated in Mafraq (Jordan) were selected as the study sample. They were randomly assigned into four groups, three experimental groups (18 in each) and one control group (18 students). The three experimental groups were taught using the computer-mediated corrective feedback modes including teachers’ feedback (students who received feedback only from the teacher), students’ feedback (students who provided and received feedback from their peers), and both (students who received and provided feedback from students and teacher). The control group was taught using computer-mediated communication. However, it neither provided nor received corrective feedback. Findings of the study reveal that there were significant differences between the mean scores of the control group and the experimental groups due to the method of teaching in favor of the experimental groups which received corrective feedback. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there was a significant effect for the mean scores between teachers’ feedback, students’ feedback or both, in favor of both where students received corrective feedback from their peers and the teacher.

Opis:
Most of the laboratory studies on recasts have examined the role of intensive recasts provided repeatedly on the same target structure. This is different from the original definition of recasts as the reformulation of learner errors as they occur naturally and spontaneously in the course of communicative interaction. Using a within-group research design and a new testing methodology (video-based stimulated correction posttest), this laboratory study examined whether extensive and spontaneous recasts provided during smallgroup work were beneficial to adult L2 learners. Participants were 26 ESL learners, who were divided into seven small groups (3-5 students per group), and each group participated in an oral activity with a teacher. During the activity, the students received incidental and extensive recasts to half of their errors; the other half of their errors received no feedback. Students’ ability to detect and correct their errors in the three types of episodes was assessed using two types of tests: a stimulated correction test (a video-based computer test) and a written test. Students’ reaction time on the error detection portion of the stimulated correction task was also measured. The results showed that students were able to detect more errors in error+recast (error followed by the provision of a recast) episodes than in error-recast (error and no recast provided) episodes (though this difference did not reach statistical significance). They were also able to successfully and partially successfully correct more errors in error+recast episodes than in error-recast episodes, and this difference was statistically significant on the written test. The reaction time results also point towards a benefit from recasts, as students were able to complete the task (slightly) more quickly for error+recast episodes than for error-recast episodes.

Opis:
The error-correction program Criterion provides students with an immediate essay feedback using tools that can analyze and review writing automatically. This feedback covers grammar, usage, mechanics, style, organization, and development. With its diagnostic tools for scoring essays and offering relevant feedback, the error-correction program provides a way to speed up the otherwise time-consuming process of essay composition and evaluation. The usefulness of the error-correction program is highlighted by analyzing the extent to which it helps second language learners improve their writing abilities, with a focus on the degree of student improvement caused by the program’s prompts from the first draft to the final essay submission. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which second language learners can improve their writing capacities using a specific set of online instruction materials, the error-correction program online essay writing tool in a group of 96 university students at the intermediate level of English.

Opis:
A substantial number of studies have examined the effects of grammar correction on second language (L2) written errors. However, most of the existing research has involved unidirectional written feedback. This classroom-based study examined the effects of oral negotiation in addressing L2 written errors. Data were collected in two intermediate adult English as a second language classes. Three types of feedback were compared: nonnegotiated direct reformulation, feedback with limited negotiation (i.e., prompt + reformulation) and feedback with negotiation. The linguistic targets chosen were the two most common grammatical errors in English: articles and prepositions. The effects of feedback were measured by means of learner-specific error identification/correction tasks administered three days, and again ten days, after the treatment. The results showed an overall advantage for feedback that involved negotiation. However, a comparison of data per error types showed that the differential effects of feedback types were mainly apparent for article errors rather than preposition errors. These results suggest that while negotiated feedback may play an important role in addressing L2 written errors, the degree of its effects may differ for different linguistic targets.

Opis:
The use of chaotic dynamics for error correction is the subject of extensive research, as the approach allows to avoid the use of redundant data. This work proposes a new technique for non-coherent chaos communications for modifying error-correction depending on chaotic dynamics. In the proposed system, there are two consecutive sequences created from a comparable chaotic map, with the second series being created as the latest value of the initial one. Generation of a sequential chaotic sequence with a comparable chaotic dynamic delivers additional information to the receiver, allowing it to appropriately recover information and, hence, facilitate the receiver’s bit-error performance. For error correction and for detecting the symbol that is transmitted, a suboptimal technique based on the nearest distance between chaotic map trajectories over the n-dimensional sequence received is utilized. Simulation results show that the proposed error correction approach improves Eb/N0 as the dimension of the trajectory map increases, indicating that the method improves overall error correction performance. With the dimension of 4, a gain of 0.8 dB in Eb/N0 is achieved compared with an approach without any error-correcting schemes, at the bit-error probability of 10−3.

Opis:
The study examined the impact of climate variability on yield of maize and yam in Cross River State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to determine the long-run and short-run impact of climate variability factors on yields of maize and yam. Data were sourced from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT) and Cross River State Ministry of Agriculture spanning from 1990-2016. Data obtained were analyzed using inferential statistics. Precisely, the model was estimated by the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) multiple regression technique, which is within the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Bound approach and error correction testing framework. Both model-1 (maize yield) and model-2 (yam yield) passed through the conditions of the diagnostics and stability test. The study revealed that climate variables had a significant impact on maize yield both in the long and short-run. Based on the findings, it was concluded that proactive measures should be put in place to aid crop farmers adapt to the prevailing and looming threats of climate variability for the purpose of attaining the State’s food security balance sheet. To sustain this drive, an institutional and infrastructural support system is advocated in order to meet one of the goals of sustainable development agenda of the United Nations. Policy recommendations on how to cushion the impact of climate variability on the prescribed crops have been appropriately cited.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – The aim of this study is to empirically investigate the influence of money supply on inflation in Nigeria. The study was borne out of the curiosity to reexamine the immediate cause of the alarming rate of inflation in Nigeria which is adversely affecting the general welfare of Nigerian populace. Design/methodology/approach – The study employed co-integration test and error correction approach on annual time series data spanning from 1970 to 2016 to ascertain both the long run and short run dynamics relationship among the variables under consideration. Findings – The results showed that money supply does not considerably influence inflation both in the long and short run possibly because the country is in recession. The error correction model has the correct sign of negative and it is significant meaning that about 21% of the errors are corrected yearly. The Granger causality outcome demonstrates that, there is no causality between money supply and inflation in Nigeria within the study period and vice-versa. Research implications/limitations – The implication of this is often that there are different economic conditions which are key determinant of inflation in Nigeria. The study recommends that the government should diversify the economy, minimise importation by encouraging local production of products and services. The Central Bank of Nigeria should guarantee an exchange rate policy that is essentially determined by the state of the economy and not by speculators being a net importation economy. Also, the Central Bank of Nigeria should look inwards into the current interest rate and see how it can be regulated in such a way that will encourage private and foreign investors to be able to invest in the country. This in turn, successively increases income, infrastructure development and economic growth at large. Originality/value/contribution – This paper has been able to confirm that money supply is not a key factor that trigger up inflation in Nigeria.

Opis:
The paper presents a numerical method of dynamic error correction applied to a measuring transducer of gas concentration with a typical sensor based on tin dioxide. The work describes research of the dynamic properties of the transducer. Its response time is approximately 8 to 10 minutes, which may be not acceptable in many applications. A parametric model of the transducer dynamics has been developed and an adequate correction algorithm is proposed. The obtained results of the dynamic correction based on the proposed method are compared with those achieved previously by applying a neural network algorithm. Despite the simplicity of the used model, the proposed method allows a significant decrease in the transducer response time.

Opis:
The world oil price is an exogenous as well as key component and factor influencing domestic prices (especially transportation). The question is: how the oil price influences producer and consumer prices. We focus on a short- and long-term relationship between the domestic prices and oil price (expressed in Polish zloty). We use Vector Error Correction Models, with cost-based specification, i.e. including additionally wages and euro-zloty exchange rate. The degree of estimated long-term pass-through oil prices to producer and consumer prices is 0,15 and 0,05, respectively. Both producer and consumer prices have comparable size of short-term reaction to an oil price shock, but the producer price reaction is more prolonged.
