Opis:: The purpose of this paper was to identify the factors influencing households to diversify rural on-farm livelihood activities in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. This is against a background where literature suggests low livelihoods diversification among rural households despite several claimed benefits of diversification. Cross-sectional survey data was randomly collected for this study in October 2018 from 190 rural households in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. A structured questionnaire was used for that purpose. Ordered logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that diversification of on-farm livelihood activities was influenced by the gender of household head, education level of household head, household size, and number of livestock units owned. To promote on-farm livelihoods diversification in rural areas, the paper suggests targeting gender differential, informal education and awareness, labor dynamics associated with on-farm livelihood activities and household livestock units.

Opis:: The issue of diversification of farms (agricultural holdings) is very complicated in the Polish legal system. The basic problem in this area is the lack of statutory definition in the state regulations. Due to the lack of this definition it is not possible do define clearly the purposes and directions of diversification. The indicated lack of statutory definition of diversification of agricultural holdings requires the search for the scope of this notion not only in a juridical approach but also in an economic one. On the whole, from the point of view of economic sciences diversification of farms means diversification in the structure of agricultural production as well as exploiting ground resources, capital and labour in farms for activities other than agricultural activity. It should also be added that the scale of production and incomes received from agricultural activity are determined by the condition of land resources in Polish farms, and above all, by fragmented land structure. Therefore there is no doubt that the Polish legislator should search for legal criteria for diversification which would also include the above mentioned economic parameters. The final purpose of such diversification should be the capacity to absorb the union support. In the Polish economic reality, necessity of supporting low output farms remains the main problem. This support should be based not only on the state funding but also union funding. This is a key issue for gradual change in land structure of farms. It seems essential to undertake complex activities aiming at the creation of full programme of changes in agriculture. ‘Rural’ policy of particular union states accepting legal instruments of diversification as a starting point should lead to lasting and balanced development of rural areas.

Opis:: Since accession to the EU, Polish dairy production has experienced dynamic changes in all spheres of its performance. In this dynamic environment, farmers had to adjust their development strategies in order to survive on the competitive market. This paper describes farmers’ attitudes towards the future in a context of strategy formulation. Results of the present study suggest that most dairy farmers in Mazovian region continue development towards increased specialisation and production scale. The study indicates that labour and human capital features could hardly explain farmers’ strategy choices. However, what seems to play a role is farm and production characteristics. It was more the milk production scale and herd size rather than utilised land that decided the further path of development. Choice of strategy should be strongly facilitated also by investments undertaken on the farm. The investments have been financed mostly from external capital – bank loans and EU investment funds. Thus, access to credit seems to be another important determinant of farm development. It was however remarkable that farmers perceived the availability of these resources as quite easy, especially in case of EU funds. As the most significant barriers to further development, farmers indicated low availability of land and insufficient qualified labour.
Od momentu przystąpienia Polski do UE polski rynek mleka doświadczył dynamicznych zmian we wszystkich sferach działalności. Aby przetrwać na konkurencyjnym rynku w dynamicznie zmieniającym się otoczeniu, rolnicy musieli dostosować strategie rozwoju swoich gospodarstw. Przedstawiono postawy producentów mleka wobec przyszłości w kontekście formułowania strategii. Wyniki badania wskazują, że większość producentów mleka na Mazowszu będzie kontynuować rozwój w kierunku zwiększenia specjalizacji i skali produkcji. Badania wykazały, że to nie cechy kapitału ludzkiego (wiek, doświadcznie) różnicują rolników pod względem wyboru ścieżki rozwoju, a gospodarstwo i jego charakterystyka (wielkość stada, produkcji, powierzchnia). Wybór strategii związany był także z inwestycjami realizowanymi i planowanymi przez rolników. Inwestycje te były finansowane głównie z kapitału zewnętrznego, tj. kredytów bankowych i funduszy inwestycyjnych UE. Tak więc dostęp do kredytu może być kolejnym ważnym wyznacznikiem rozwoju gospodarstwa. Do największych barier dla dalszego rozwoju gospodarstw rolnicy zaliczyli niską dostępność gruntów (zarówno dzierżawy jak i zakupu) oraz brak wykwalifikowanych pracowników.

Opis:: Non-farm livelihood diversification is an important livelihood strategy for rural households in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the available evidence suggests that these strategies have received less attention; therefore, the constraints rural people face in venturing into the non-farm sector also remain unaddressed. In order to understand the livelihood strategies and constraints in the sector, this paper used crosssectional survey data from 251 randomly sampled farmers from the Sunyani West District, Ghana. Focus Group Discussions were also conducted in order to collect qualitative data to support quantitative analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics: frequencies, percentages and cross tabulation. The study found that the non-farm sector was heterogeneous and highly gendered and involved several activities, with trading being the most prominent one. Gender disaggregation of non-farm activities has underlying cultural and social bases resulting in different production roles for males and females. Although farmers are predominantly engaged in farming as their major livelihood strategy, they also pursue non-farm livelihood activities due to push, rather than pull, factors. Inadequate access to credit and limited business opportunities were the major constraints impeding the development of the non-farm sector in the district. In order to propel rural development, policy makers and researchers should give attention to the development of the non-farm sector since it is an important source of income for many people. Apart from that, the study recommends that banking and micro-finance institutions design special credit programmes for rural people.

Opis:: The aim of the paper was to present the economic situation of farms in the countries of the EU at two different moments in time, and to attempt to assess changes in their situations in the considered period. Analyses were carried out on the basis of FADN data. The object of the study was the economic situation, including production potential, production and economic results and financial indicators. Based on selected characteristics, cluster analysis was performed for 2004 and 2013 and the economic situations of created typological groups was presented. It was found that in both the given years agriculture in the EU countries can be divided into several types. In the studied decade, convergence in the economic situation of farms in the EU was observed. Most Czech, Estonian, and Latvian entities benefited from this process.
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie sytuacji ekonomicznej gospodarstw rolnych krajów UE w dwóch różnych momentach czasowych oraz próba oceny zmian tej sytuacji w badanym okresie. Analizy przeprowadzono na podstawie danych FADN. Przedmiotem badań była sytuacja ekonomiczna, obejmująca potencjał wytwórczy, wyniki produkcyjne i ekonomiczne oraz wskaźniki fi nansowe. Na podstawie wybranych cech wykonano analizę skupień dla lat 2004 i 2013 oraz przedstawiono sytuację ekonomiczną utworzonych grup typologicznych. Stwierdzono, że w obu badanych latach w krajach UE można wyróżnić kilka typów rolnictwa. W badanym dziesięcioleciu zaobserwowano proces konwergencji w zakresie sytuacji ekonomicznej gospodarstw rolnych w UE, a na procesie tym najbardziej skorzystały podmioty czeskie, a także estońskie i łotewskie.

Opis:: Artykuł podejmuje problem absorpcji środków pochodzących z Programu Rozwoju Obszarów Wiejskich w ramach działania 311. „Różnicowanie w kierunku działalności nierolniczej”, rozdysponowanych w latach 2007 - 2013 na terenie województwa kujawsko-pomorskiego. Pod uwagę wzięto tę część środków, które przeznaczono na rozwój działalności agroturystycznej. Podjęto także próbę określenia czynników lokalizacji gospodarstw świadczących usługi turystyczne. Wykorzystano dane pozyskane z Agencji Restrukturyzacji i Modernizacji Rolnictwa wg stanu na 31.03.2017 r., dotyczące kosztów kwalifikowanych poszczególnych projektów, jak również ich szczegółowych opisów. Przeanalizowano 34 inwestycje, pod względem zrealizowanych przedsięwzięć, wysokości kosztów i rozmieszczenia przestrzennego dotowanych gospodarstw. Wykazano, że w badanych latach powstało 15 nowych gospodarstw agroturystycznych, a 19 zostało zmodernizowanych. Dotowane gospodarstwa były w większości usytuowane w sąsiedztwie obszarów chronionych oraz w strefach podmiejskich.
The aim of the article is to analyze the impact of the Rural Development Program funds on the diversification of economic activity in the rural areas of Kujawsko Pomorskie Voivodeship in the years 2007-2013. Considering this part of the funds were spent on the development of agritourism. Also an attempted was made to determine the location factors of farms offering agritourist services. Data from the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture was used (March 31, 2017), concerning eligible costs of individual projects as well as detailed project descriptions. Thus, 34 investments were analyzed, in terms of scope of work, cost and spatial distribution of subsidized farms. It has been shown that in the studied years 15 new agrotourism farms were established and 19 were modernized. Subsidized farms were mostly located in the vicinity of protected areas and suburban areas.

Opis:: The article shows the scale and reasons of regional disparities in the development of selected activities in multifunctional farmers in Poland, which are a an example of the diversification of farm activities. Moreover, they presented the benefits for farmers as a result of taking up and pursuit of selected multifunctional activities. Empirically, the paper is based on primary and secondary data. The primary data is derived from the findings of a survey carried out among farmers (interview with a questionnaire), whereas the secondary data comes from the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The findings of the research show high regional diversification of the development level of farmers’ nonfarming activity. The highest discrepancy was observed in the case of the percentage of organic farms in the total number of farms. Less intense were those in the case of the share of agritourism farm households, whereas the lowest regional differences were recorded for the farm households holding its own direct sales scheme of farm produce. Another important finding from the survey of the farmers running nonfarming economic activity is that the highest advantages of such activity are the increase in farm household income and improvement of the farm family living standard. However, farmers found it difficult to observe any advantages of nonfarming economic activity in rural areas.
W artykule pokazano skalę i przyczyny regionalnego zróżnicowania poziomu rozwoju wybranych form działalności wielofunkcyjnej rolników w Polsce, będących przejawem dywersyfikacji działalności gospodarstw rolnych. Ponadto zaprezentowano korzyści, jakie uzyskują rolnicy w wyniku podejmowania i prowadzenia wybranych form działalności wielofunkcyjnej. Materiał empiryczny artykułu stanowią dane pierwotne oraz wtórne. Pierwotny materiał pozyskano w drodze badań ankietowych gospodarstw rolnych (wywiad z kwestionariuszem z rolnikami), zaś materiał wtórny stanowią dane z Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego w Warszawie. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono duże regionalne zróżnicowanie poziomu rozwoju analizowanych w artykule form działalności wielofunkcyjnej rolników w Polsce. Największe różnice występują w przypadku odsetka gospodarstw ekologicznych, mniejsze w przypadku odsetka gospodarstw rolnych z pozarolniczą działalnością gospodarczą, w tym agroturystycznych, najmniejsze zaś w przypadku odsetka gospodarstw rolnych prowadzących sprzedaż bezpośrednią. Z badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych wśród rolników wynika, że w wyniku prowadzenia analizowanych w artykule form działalności wielofunkcyjnej uzyskują oni szereg rozmaitych korzyści zarówno dla gospodarstwa domowego i rodziny rolniczej, jak i dla gospodarstwa rolnego. Z opinii rolników wynika przy tym, że nie dostrzegają oni większych korzyści z tego tytułu dla obszarów wiejskich.

Opis:: The main aim of this study was to explore the potential of agritourism development in the Kościerski region. The study also aimed to establish the sampled farmers’ interest in and satisfaction with agritourism as a form of income diversification. A survey was carried out among all farm owners engaging in agritourism activity in the Kościerski region (44 persons). The research tool was a questionnaire which identified the level of interest and satisfaction of respondents with an agritourism business. The research shows that getting involved in agritourism gives the opportunity to diversify farm income in the Kościerski Region. The natural and agricultural conditions are conducive, and the farmers are trying to provide an adequate standard of accommodation and quality services.
Celem opracowania jest określenie potencjału rozwoju działalności agroturystycznej w powiecie kościerskim oraz poziomu zainteresowania i zadowolenia rolników z tej formy dywersyfikacji dochodów. W badaniach udział wzięli wszyscy właściciele gospodarstw agroturystycznych z terenu powiatu kościerskiego (44 osoby). Narzędziem badawczym był kwestionariusz ankiety, który zawierał pytania pozwalające na określenie poziomu zainteresowania i zadowolenia respondentów z prowadzenia działalności agroturystycznej. Badania wykazały, że działalność agroturystyczna jest realną szansą na dywersyfikację dochodów w gospodarstwach rolnych powiatu kościerskiego. Sprzyjają temu warunki przyrodniczo-rolnicze, a badani rolnicy starają się zapewniać odpowiedni standard gospodarstw agroturystycznych oraz jakość oferowanych usług.

Opis:: The factors which caused problems in swine production of Ukraine were identified. The trends in biogas production and consumption at farm enterprises in swine farming were studied. The evaluation of the production efficiency of both pork and alternative fuel – biogas – was made. A polynomial model, which describes potential of biogas production at farm enterprises in swine breeding in terms of natural gas in the years of 1990-2013 and envisages further increase of this indicator, was developed. It has been established that biogas production and consumption from swine substrates at farm enterprises will allow producing ecologically clean alternative fuel, ensuring food safety, creating new jobs, increasing business profits, reducing import fuel dependence. The research results can help solve practical problems of farm enterprises in swine production and in agrarian business in general.
