The paper presents the results of research on the implementation of monitoring of the landfills influence on the atmospheric air using bioindication methods on the example of the Zhytomyr landfill (Ukraine)–one of the typical Ukrainian landfills, which is operated with minimal environmental protection measures. A comprehensive study of atmospheric air pollution in the landfill area was carried out using a human sensor system and an integral assessment using bioindication (lichens were chosen as bioindicators). The study revealed a reliable exponential dependence for modeling the relationship between the distance from the source of gas formation (solid waste landfill in the city of Zhytomyr) and the intensity of odor. The level of atmospheric air pollution was also determined based on the assessment of the projective coverage of the tree trunk with lichens. The research revealed an exponential dependence for modeling the relationship between the distance from the landfill boundary and the total coverage of the tree trunk with lichens. The results of the analysis confirmed the correctness of the use of the aforementioned method. The relationship between the results obtained by the lichen indication method and the strength of the odor from the landfill was evaluated. Based on the results of calculating the relative values of the assessment of atmospheric air pollution by the method of coverage of the tree trunk with lichens and the strength of the odor, a regression analysis was carried out and mathematical relationships were determined, that most accurately describe the change in these indicators with distance from the landfill boundary. It is proved that both tested methods can be used in Ukrainian realities to monitor the state of atmospheric air in the area of influence of municipal landfills, depending on the purpose of research. The analysis of the research results confirmed the significance of the results of the obtained assessment of the impact of the Zhytomyr solid waste landfill on the state of atmospheric air. The materials of these studies can find further application for the formation of databases of knowledge of landfills, which will allow to develop a strategy for managing them as an object of increased environmental hazard.

Opis:
A preliminary red list of threatened lichens of Lower Silesia (SW Poland) is presented. Species have been valuated according to the Red Data Book Categories (IUCN). The list comprises 602 taxa (ca. 60% of the whole lichen flora of Lower Silesia). 52 species are considered as rare (category R), 84 - as vulnerable (V), and 63 species - as endangered (E). The Silesian lichen flora is characterized by great numbers of taxa with extinct (Ex -140 taxa), and indeterminate (I - 263 taxa) categories.

Symptoms of inflammation accompany a number of diseases. In order to mitigate them, folk medicine has used a variety of medicinal substances, including herbs and mushrooms. Lichens are less known organisms, containing specific secondary metabolites with interesting biological properties. One of their biological actions is the anti-inflammatory activity that has been confirmed by in vitro and animal studies. It has been proven that compounds and extracts from lichens inhibit the enzymes involved in the inflammatory process. The following paper is a review of research on the little-known anti-inflammatory properties of lichens.
Objawy zapalenia towarzyszą wielu jednostkom chorobowym. W celu ich łagodzenia medycyna ludowa wykorzystuje różnorodne substancje lecznicze, w tym zioła i grzyby. Porosty stanowią grupę organizmów mniej znanych, lecz zawierających specyficzne metabolity wtórne o ciekawych właściwościach biologicznych. Jednym z kierunków działania porostów, potwierdzonym badaniami w warunkach in vitro i na zwierzętach, jest aktywność przeciwzapalna. Dowiedziono, że związki i wyciągi z porostów działają m.in. poprzez hamowanie enzymów uczestniczących w przebiegu procesu zapalnego. Artykuł stanowi przegląd badań nad mało znanymi przeciwzapalnymi właściwościami porostów.

The study presents recent data on the distribution of Fellhanera gyrophorica (Pilocarpaceae, Ascomycota) in Poland, a rare lichen with a crustose, usually sterile thallus. Both previous and new localities of the species are presented with data on its ecology and general distribution. Furthermore, this paper provides detailed results on floristic investigations of the species in the forest areas of the Pojezierze Olsztyńskie Lakeland (Northern Poland). Fertile specimens of F. gyrophorica have been observed in Poland for the second time and in the world – for the third time. Also, a new substrate for this species has been found: Acer platanoides. In addition, Carpinus betulus and Populus tremula were also found to be the species' substrates in Poland. Based on this study and previous reports, F. gyrophorica seems to be a relatively common species in north-eastern Poland.

Parmelia serrana A. Crespo, M.C. Molina & D. Hawksw. is reported here for the first time from Poland. The species has been recorded from more than 20 localities and exclusively on the bark of trees. Its general distribution, habitat requirements, morphology, secondary chemistry are provided and the differences between this species and similar taxa, especially P. saxatilis and P. ernstiae, are discussed.

The paper presents the results of studies of Xanthoparmelia pulla group in Poland. The morphological and chemical analysis of herbarium materials confirmed the presence of four species of this group reported from Poland before. The study however, revealed considerable changes it the partiuclular species distribution. X. verruculifera, so far considered the most endangered species in the country, turned out to be the most frequent taxon. X. loxodes, regarded as common, has much less known localities than previously thought. This species was usually confused with X. verruculifera. Xanthoparmelia pulla is the rarest species and should be considered critically endangered in Poland. Most specimens of X. pulla collected in the country belong to X. delisei, which so far had only two historical records in Poland. All these taxa are characterized in terms of morphology, the content of secondary metabolites, ecology and distribution.

The article presents the results of the studies of lichens in streams and spring areas of the escarpment zone of Wzniesienia Łódzkie Heights in Central Poland. The boulders, stones and roots of Alnus glutinosa, situated in 3 inundated zones in the streams: submerged zone, fluvial mesic zone and fluvial xeric zone, were examined in the streams. The studies have shown 23 species connected with these streams. Six species of freshwater lichens: Verrucaria aquatilis, V. hydrela, Hydropunctaria rheitrophila, V. margacea, V. praetermissa and V. madida, occupied stones in 3 different zones. Verrucaria aquatilis and Hydropunctaria rheitrophila colonized also secondary substrates – the bark of alder roots incrusted with sand grains and silt.
W rzekach i strumieniach Parku Krajobrazowego Wzniesień Łódzkich, w Polsce Środkowej, odnotowano 23 gatunki porostów wodnych (Tab. 2), z którymi konkuruje o podłoże 7 gatunków mszaków. Sześć ściśle wodnych gatunków naskalnych znajduje się na czerwonej liście porostów zagrożonych Polski (Cieśliński et al. 2006). Większość porostów wodnych rośnie w odcinkach początkowych rzek i strumieni, co prawdopodobnie wynika z korzystnych warunków fizykochemicznych wód (Tab. 1) i wzrostu zanieczyszczenia w dalszym biegu rzek. Badania porostów wodnych wykazały ich rozmieszczenie w trzech strefach: 1 − całkowicie zatopionej, 2 − często zatapianej i 3 − sporadycznie zatapianej lub spryskiwanej wodą (Fig. 2). W drugiej i trzeciej strefie zanurzenia, w towarzystwie Coenogonium pineti, Arthonia spadicea i Absconditella lignicola (Tab. 2) rośnie Bacidina sulphurella (Fig. 5), rzadki porost w Polsce. W badanych rzekach obligatoryjne epility wodne rosną na głazach i kamieniach, jedynie Hydropunctaria rheitrophila (Figs 3 A, B) i Verrucaria aquatilis zasiedlają także korę korzeni olsz często pokrytych ziarnami piasku i mułem. Kolonizowanie podłoży zastępczych przez epility wodne obserwowano w Alpach (Thüs and Schultz 2009), w północno-wschodniej i wschodniej Europie (Motiejūnaitė 2003, 2009; Pykälä 2006; Motiejūnaitė, Czyżewska 2008), również w Polsce Północno-Wschodniej (Czyżewska et al. 2001).

Two lichenized fungi, Lecania cuprea and Micarea pycnidiophora, are reported for the first time from Poland. Lecania cuprea is also recorded as a new lichen species to the Western Beskidy Mts and the Pieniny Mts and M. pycnidiophora is new to the Carpathians. Illustrated descriptions, taxonomic notes, habitat requirements and known distributions for both species are provided.

The vitality of lichens and their growth depend on the physiological status of both the fungal and algal partner. Many epiphytic lichens demonstrate high specificity to a habitat type and hygrophilous species are, as a rule, confined to close-to-natural forest complexes. Tolerance to desiccation stress and the rate of photosynthesis activation upon thallus hydration vary between species. Analyzes of chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthesis efficiency have been widely applied to determine the viability of lichens. The aim of this study was to determine the activation photosynthesis rate upon hydration in epiphytic lichens exposed to short-term desiccation stress and to find potential links between their activation pattern and ecological properties. The results proved that even highly sensitive hygrophilous lichens, i.e., Cetrelia cetrarioides, Lobaria pulmonaria, Menegazzia terebrata, do not exhibit any delay in the restart of the photosynthesis process, compared to mesophytic or xerophytic ones. All examined lichens achieved nearly 100% of their maximum photosynthetic efficiency just one hour after they had been supplied with a relatively small quantity of water. Moreover, the increase in photosynthesis efficiency, measured at 20-minute intervals upon hydration, started from a relatively high level. In addition, the differences in the content of photosynthetic pigments and water holding capacity between species did not affect the general pattern of activation, which is comparable across various lichens. It can be concluded that healthy hygrophilous lichens do not require long hydration time to regain a high level of photosynthesis efficiency after a short rainless period. This fact supports the idea of applying chlorophyll fluorescence analysis in the field to assess vitality of lichens and the condition of their natural habitat.
