Opis:
The purpose of the article was to point out the possibilities of applying metaanalysis in economic science and particularly in econometrics. So far, in Poland meta-analyses were applied in behavioral sciences, medicine and some in economic studies and management, whereas this method has been used used elsewhere since the 1970s for solving a wide spectrum of problems in many fields of study. The present article shows meta-analysis as the method using statistical tools the most, from amongst all the methods of the literature review, and it shows the procedure of carrying it out step by step and its advantages and disadvantages.

Opis:
Introduction: Osteoporosis affects over 200 million people worldwide causing nearly 9 million fractures annually, with more than half in America and Europe. Objectives: This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether low milk intake is associated with an increased risk of fractures by summarizing all the available evidence. Methods: Relevant studies were identified by searching the PubMed and EMBASE databases up to June 2020. The pooled relative risks with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results: In a meta-regression analysis of 20 included studies (11 cohort and 9 case-control studies), a higher milk intake was not associated with a reduction in the total fracture risk in both sexes (OR 0.95, 95% CI: 0.84– 1.08), either in cohort (OR 0.91; 95% CI: 0.79–1.05) or case-control studies (OR 1.09; 95% CI: 0.82–1.44), as well as separately in men (OR 0.87; 95% CI: 0.71–1.07) and women (OR 0.95; 95% CI: 0.80–1.13). Conclusion: Higher milk consumption is not associated with fracture risk reduction and should not be recommended for fracture prevention.

Opis:
Background. Common approaches to software verification include static testing techniques, such as code reading, and dynamic testing techniques, such as black-box and white-box testing. Objective. With the aim of gaining a better understanding of software testing techniques, a controlled experiment replication and the synthesis of previous experiments which examine the efficiency of code reading, black-box and white-box testing techniques were conducted. Method. The replication reported here is composed of four experiments in which instrumented programs were used. Participants randomly applied one of the techniques to one of the instrumented programs. The outcomes were synthesized with seven experiments using the method of network meta-analysis (NMA). Results. No significant differences in the efficiency of the techniques were observed. However, it was discovered the instrumented programs had a significant effect on the efficiency. The NMA results suggest that the black-box and white-box techniques behave alike; and the efficiency of code reading seems to be sensitive to other factors. Conclusion. Taking into account these findings, the Authors suggest that prior to carrying out software verification activities, software engineers should have a clear understanding of the software product to be verified; they can apply either black-box or white-box testing techniques as they yield similar defect detection rates.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the role of a priori information on the basis of a meta- -analysis in the evaluation of the fit and accuracy of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This type of model is particularly used to analyze the attitudes and behavior towards new technologies (Moodle platform). In model construction three approaches are compared: structural model with the latent variables (SEM), Bayesian SEM with informative priors based on metanalysis. The aim of the paper is to assess the role of information a priori (subjective knowledge of the researcher and the results of past studies) to assess the stability of the model parameters and fit of the model. Use of information about the prior distributions of parameters and values of point estimates allows to determine the starting points of estimation process and is an essential condition for building a model in bayesian approach. In the process of modeling two models are compared: one built solely on the basis of data (without prior information) and the other that use subjective knowledge of the researcher.

Opis:
Is it possible to find any specificity of research carried out by psychologists in their own country, justifying publication also in their native language? The question posed by Brzeziński (2014) requires considering different types of psychological research: studies regarding universal issues have to be diffused in a shared scientific format and in an international language, while studies regarding specific applicative aspects, linked to particular contexts, can be published in a language easily accessible to the psychologists living in a specific country. This kind of research and publication, if conducted with correct methodology, should not be considered of secondary scientific value. As regards the question of what indices should be used to determine a psychologist’s position in world science, I will discuss the assumption of “objectivity” in this kind of evaluation: objectivity is very difficult to obtain using numeric criteria, while pre-determined scientific and teaching criteria and thresholds could be more suitable to achieve a full evaluation for habilitation or for other scientific or academic purposes. As regards reactions to scientific pathologies such as fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism of data, meta-analysis based on cumulative research on research could permit to detect unexpected outliers and to discover “file drawer effects,” allowing replications and enhancing respect for scientific rules and ethics.

Opis:
Introduction: Despite advancements in diagnostic methods, the early detection of colorectal anastomotic leakage (CAL) continues to pose challenges. The identification of reliable markers is crucial to reduce patient morbidity and mortality. Cytokines present in drain fluid and systemic cytokine levels have shown promise as predictive markers for CAL; however, additional high-quality evidence is warranted to enhance the reliability and validity of the findings in this field. Aim: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the significance of peritoneal and serum/plasma interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels in the early detection of CAL in patients undergoing colorectal surgery for colorectal cancer. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, covering studies published until July 2023. The search aimed to identify relevant studies investigating the levels of plasma/serum and peritoneal IL-10 (or both) in colorectal cancer patients undergoing colorectal surgery, specifically focusing on the presence of CAL. Data on the mean and standard deviation of IL-10 levels in both CAL and non-CAL patients were extracted from the selected studies. Mean differences in IL-10 levels were analyzed for each postoperative day (POD) using the OpenMeta [analyst] software. Results: 11 articles were selected for inclusion in this systematic review. Among them, nine articles reported data on peritoneal IL-10 levels, while four articles focused on circulating IL-10 levels. The statistical analysis included four eligible articles that assessed peritoneal IL-10 levels, and the results indicated no significant increase in CAL patients compared to non-CAL patients on any postoperative day (POD). Meta-analysis for circulating IL-10 levels was not feasible. Conclusions: Up to now, peritoneal and systemic IL-10 levels cannot be considered as early markers for CAL after colorectal surgery in colorectal cancer patients. More high-quality studies are needed to establish the potential of IL-10 as a reliable marker for detecting anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery.

Opis:
Introduction and aim. Topical metronidazole, with its well-known anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, could be beneficial for managing seborrheic dermatitis (SD), but studies report conflicting results. The aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical metronidazole in the treatment of SD. Material and methods. A systematic search of Medline, Embase, and CENTRAL was conducted from inception to April 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing metronidazole to any comparator for SD were included in this study. Data were pooled using random-effects models. Analysis of the literature. Seven RCTs were included. Overall, topical metronidazole did not significantly reduce SD symptom severity when compared to any comparator/treatment. However, it significantly reduced symptom severity compared to placebo after 4 to 8 weeks (standardized mean difference (SMD) -3.00, 95% CI, -5.21 to -0.78). Specifically for facial SD, metronidazole showed significant symptom reduction (SMD -0.85, 95% CI, -1.41 to -0.29). No significant differences were found in the proportion of patients with clinical improvement or side effect frequency. Most studies had a high risk of bias and lacked information on missing data and assessor masking. Conclusion. Topical metronidazole demonstrates potential for managing SD, but current trials lack quality. Larger, high-quality trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and compare it with other treatments for SD.

Opis:
The treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater is a source for a large number of airborne microorganisms, which can be released at the environment during mechanical aeration. A meta-analysis of up to 14 industrial and municipal treatment plants was performed to determine the bacterial count in bioaerosols, as well as antibiotic resistance, at different stages of the wastewater treatment (pretreatment, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment), in comparison with bacterial counts of the ambient air surrounding the treatment plants. The highest contamination of the air with microorganisms was observed in the raw sewage inlet and at the biological reactor. In most analyzes, the air in the wastewater treatment plant was characterized by a higher content of microorganisms than at the control point. Bioaerosols from water treatment might be an important source of antibiotic resistance genes, which can be transported considerable distances and can represent a potential risk to humans. Therefore, employees should recognize the health risks associated with the absence of personal protective equipment, such as masks or respirators.

Opis:
Objectives: In the general population, cadmium seems to be responsible for hypertension, atherosclerosis and an increase in acute coronary events. Therefore, the purpose of this meta-analysis was to analyze controlled studies conducted on cadmium and arterial pressure in occupationally-exposed workers. Materials and Methods: After analyzing all the relevant articles found in the literature, 6 publications were selected. Results: A higher prevalence of hypertension and higher values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were recorded in the exposed subjects. Conclusions: Cadmium in occupationallyexposed individuals appears to induce an increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and an increase in the prevalence of hypertension.
