Opis:
Practices currently employed in the investigation and characterisation of peat deposits are destructive and may irremediable perturb peat bog development even in cases when exploitation is not carried out. We investigated the correlation between vegetation characteristics in the active area of Poiana Ştampei peat bog, Romania, and the underlying peat layer depth, aiming at establishing a non-destructive method of peat layer depth estimation. The presence of the Sphagneto-Eriophoretum vaginati association, dominated by Sphagnum fimbriatum, Eriophorum vaginatum, Andromeda polifolia, Vaccinium oxycoccos, V. myrtillus, V. vitis-idaea, Polytrichum commune, Picea excelsa, Pinus sylvestris and Betula verrucosa was found to predict the existence of the peat layer but not its depth. Out of the seven identified vegetation types, one type was associated with a very thin or no peat layer, one type was characterised by the presence of a thick (over 100 cm) peat layer and five types indicated the presence of variable average depths of the peat layer. pH values correlated with peat layer depth only within the vegetation type associated with thick peat layers.

Vaccinium uliginosum L., as a species associated with raised bogs and marshy coniferous forests, belongs to rare and endangered species in Wielkopolska. This paper presents results of research on the resources and condition of the population of this species on the isolated site within the “Bagna” near Chlebowo in northern Wielkopolska (western Poland). The results indicate that this population is declining.

Opis:
This work focuses on the paleoenvironmental and palaeoclimatological history of the undisturbed core sequence of 8.6 m extracted from the Bottomless Lake (Tăul fără fund) sphagnum peat bog located in Bǎgǎu, Romania, which covers the last 8,600 years based on radiocarbon dating. By comparing results of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental investigations carried out so far in the area, results of the loss on ignition analyses and the data of the chronological analyses, it was possible to reconstruct climatic factors and anthropogenic impacts on the local environment. The undisturbed core sequence has above 86% organic matter content all along excluding the erosion horizons. Anthropogenic effects (building, woodcutting, pasturage, husbandry, farming) and changes in the local climate, vegetation, and environment increased the rate of the erosion and decreased the rate of the accumulation.

This study presents information on a new to Poland synanthropic species - Aronia ×prunifolia (purple chokeberry).Purple chokeberry is cultivated worldwide as a fruit and decorative plant. In various regions of the world the process of its naturalisation outside the places of cultivation has been observed. In Europe, it is visible, among others, in Holland and Germany. In Poland, the first case was recorded in the "Bagna" bog complex near Chlebowo (Wielkopolska region). In this study, the distribution of Aronia ×prunifolia in Poland has been presented (square ATPOL BC67, BC68) as well as its spread and conditions of occurrence.

Opis:
The paper presents results of mycological research carried out in the “Torfowisko Toporzyk” nature reserve (NW Poland), in the years 2004–2009. As a result of the studies, 216 fungal species were identified, 17 Ascomycota and 199 Basidiomycota. Twenty of the recorded species are included on the Polish red list of macrofungi, e.g. Cortinarius violaceus, Lactarius lacunarum, Mycena megaspora and Suillus flavidus. Among the plant associations, Vaccinio uliginosi-Pinetum (87 species) and Vaccinio uliginosi-Betuletum pubescentis (77), turned out to be the richest in fungi, whereas the fewest taxa were found in Rhynchosporetum albae (8).

Opis:
Hormotila ramosissima Korš., a very rare in the world and poorly known species, have been found in peat bogs of Lower Silesia. The growth stages typical of this species but unknown so far, have been described and illustrated. It was found that this species has many features in common with the representatives of Volvocales, Tetrasporales, and chlorococcales. The regularly observed zoospores and hemizoospores, which accompanied the various developmental stages of that species, showed an internal structure of Chlamydomonas-type. Studies on Hormotila ramosissima were based on live material collected in ample quantities from peat bogs. The collected in this way repeatable and abundant data allowed to discuss problems concerning morphology, reproduction and development, as well as consider the taxonomic position this species.

Opis:
Late Holocene deposits containing abundant and well-preserved malacofauna were exposed within the Spa Park in Busko-Zdrój. Molluscan shells were found in sand, dark muds and calcareous muds. Dark and calcareous muds are intercalated by fine-grained sand and peat devoid of malacofauna. Ali these deposits were accumulated on swampy, flat bottom of wide river valley. The result of radiocarbon dating has shown that the formation of the deposits started in the upper part of the Subboreal Phase. Numerous Late Medieval portery shards were found in several topmost profile sections. The identified malacofauna suggests that similar climatic and habitat conditions prevailed throughout the entire sedimentation period. Snails typical of open habitats, accompanied by hygrophilous taxa, play a dominant role. Mesophilous and aquatic taxa occur in accessory proportions, while shadow-loving forms are virtually absent.

Opis:
The peat soils, like other hydrogenic soils, accumulate heavy metals in a much higher amount than mineral soils. Hight organic matter content in peat soils favours accumulation of heavy metals. The research aimed at determining the degree of accumulation of selected heavy metals (Cd, Pb and Zn) in peat soils located in the area of the Konecki county (Staropolski Industrial Region). The research results demonstrated that location of the analyzed peat bogs influenced heavy metal concentrations. The lowest contents of the analyzed heavy metals were characteristic of the soils of the peat bog situated at the longest distance from potential sources of pollution.

Opis:
The peat bog areas in southeastern Poland are a habitat for many interesting, often endangered, and rare or even new diatom species for Poland. Research conducted in the years 2022–2023 in three landscape parks (Pogórze Przemyskie Landscape Park, Południoworoztoczański Landscape Park, and Janowskie Forests Landscape Park) has allowed the identification of numerous rare and endangered species from the Pinnularia genus, including some that are new to Poland. The paper provides a detailed morphological and ecological characterization of six rare or endangered Pinnularia species, among which two were found to be new for Poland (Pinnularia lokana and P. esoxiformangusta).
