Opis:: Populus is a genus that contains numerous taxa that are often difficult to identify. They are grouped into six sections which are mainly based on the differences in the structure of flowers and leaves. Nevertheless, other features are also of great importance in identifying individual sections. In this paper, individual sections are characterized. Two subsections within the Populus section (syn. Leuce Duby) are distinguished, due to the clear differences between white poplars and aspens. The sections are as follows: sect. 1. Abaso Eckenw. (mexican poplar), sect. 2. Turanga Bunge (arid and tropical poplars), sect. 3. Leucoides Spach (bigleaf poplars), sect. 4. Aigeiros Duby (cottonwoods and black poplar), sect. 5. Tacamahaca Spach (balsam poplars), sect. 6. Populus, with two subsections: 6a. Populus (white poplars) and 6b. Trepidae (Dode) Tamm (aspens).

Opis:: Change in hydrolytic enzyme efficiency over time. The purpose of this study was to determine the action of hydrolytic enzymes (by Dyadic Cellulase CP CONC, and the Dyadic Xylanase 2 XP CONC) over time. Chromatographic analysis of holocellulose samples subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis was performed. The following hydrolysis parameters were used: time 48h, temperature 45 ⁰C, acetate buffer pH 5.4, commercial enzymes Dyadic. Holocellulose extracted by the sodium chlorite method from white poplar wood (Populus alba L.) was used. The final yield of enzymatic hydrolysis was determined. The results of hydrolysis performed at intervals were compared. The results obtained show that the hydrolysis yield of holocellulose after five months decreased by 40 p.p. for glucose yield and by 25 p.p. for xylose yield. The yield for glucose after two and a half years decreases by 68 p.p. and 62 p.p. for xylose compared to the initial yield.
Zmiana wydajności enzymów hydrolitycznych w czasie Celem pracy było określenie działania enzymów hydrolitycznych w czasie. Przeprowadzono analizę chromatograficzną próbek holocelulozy poddanych hydrolizie enzymatycznej. Zastosowano następujące parametry hydrolizy: czas 48h, temperatura 45 ⁰C, bufor octanowy pH 5,4, enzymy komercyjne Dyadic. Zastosowano holocelulozę pozyskaną metodą chlorynu sodowego z drewna topoli bialej (Populs alba L.). Określono końcową wydajność hydrolizy enzymatycznej. Porównano wyniki hydrolizy przeprowadzonej w odstępach czasu. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że wydajność hydrolizy holocelulozy po pięciu miesiącach zmniejszyła się o 40 p.p. dla wydajności glukozy i o 25 p.p. dla wydajności ksylozy. Wydajność glukozy po dwóch i pół roku obniża się o 68 p.p., a ksylozy o 62 p.p. w stosunku do wydajności początkowej.

Opis:: This paper deals with a colour modification method of poplar (Populus x euramericana cv. Pannonia) without any chemicals or stains. Steaming was found to be a proper modification method to change its natural greyish-white colour to a more attractive brown tint. Black locust and beech timber (as initiators) were steamed together with poplar timber to intensify its colour change. Treatment temperatures were 90 °C; 100 °C; 110 °C and 120 °C. Maximum duration of steaming was 20 days (9 days at 120 °C). The colour change of sapwood and heartwood was monitored separately using the CIE Lab colour system. A wide range of hues was created using this treatment method ranging from the initial colour to brown depending on the steaming time and temperature. The presence of black locust or beech wood facilitated the colour change of poplar only above 100°C. In terms of the colour alteration of different wood parts, these initiator species were more effective in the heartwood part than in sapwood. Chromophore molecules generating the yellowness increase did not prove to be stable at 120 °C. Higher treatment temperature tends to partly degrade these molecules resulting in reduced yellowness values.

Opis:: The chromatographic analysis of extracts from poplar (Populus sp.) - Laying program GC-MS. The aim of the study was to develop the method of analysis by gas chromatography of the liquid obtained after extraction with cyclohexane of wood of different poplar varieties (Populus sp.). After applying an appropriate method, the application of gas chromatography with mass detector facilitates the analysis of the chemical composition of extracts from different types of lignocellulosic biomass. It is also possible to verify included compounds as well as to compare the content of individual compounds contained in the analysed sample. Moreover, this sample will make it possible to determine the significance of the influence of given substances on biofuel production processes based on lignocellulosic materials. One of the key chemical substances influencing the process of enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation are extraction substances contained in lignocellulose materials used in 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels. These compounds can inhibit the whole process of producing biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass.
Analiza chromatograficzna ekstraktów z drewna topoli (Populus sp.)- układanie programu GC-MS. Celem pracy było opracowanie metodyki przeprowadzania analizy przy pomocy chromatografii gazowej cieczy pozyskanej po ekstrakcji za pomocą cykloheksanu drewna różnych odmian topoli (Populus sp.). Zastosowanie chromatografii gazowej z detektorem mas (GC-MS) umożliwia po zastosowaniu odpowiedniej metody na analizę składu chemicznego ekstraktów z różnych rodzajów biomasy lignocelulozowej oraz weryfikacje związków w niej występującej, a także porównanie zawartości poszczególnych związków w analizowanej próbce, co umożliwi określenie istotności wpływu danych substancji na procesy wytwarzania biopaliw w oparciu o materiały lignocelulozowe. Jednymi z kluczowych substancji chemicznych wpływających na proces hydrolizy enzymatycznej oraz fermentacji są substancje ekstrakcyjne zawarte w materiałach lignocelulozowych wykorzystywanych w biopaliwach 2 i 3 generacji. Związki te mogą inhibitować cały proces wytwarzania biopaliw z biomasy lignocelulozowej.

Opis:: Studies on the suitability of oxidizing agents for discolouring lime and poplar wood in the first stage of transparent wood forming process. Series of lime and poplar wood samples were prepared and subjected to oxidising agent in order to decolourise wood in bulk. Sodium chlorite solution in the environment of diluted acetic acid and alkaline hydrogen peroxide solution were used as different treating agents, followed by intense rinsing in water and drying the samples. The effect of wood delignification conditions such as time of treatment and reagent used was investigated. Changes in mass and dimensions of the samples were measured, and thus density changes were calculated. Colour changes were measured with colorimeter in CIE Lab colour space. In the case of lime wood swelling of the samples was observed at the first stage, along with mass loss, leading to density decrease by 10 % after 20 h exposure. In the case of poplar wood, shrinking of the samples was observed, but due to severe mass loss, final density was similar to lime wood. Colour changes correlated mainly with lightness parameter of the samples. Significant colour differences were found even at the shortest time of treatment.
Badanie przydatności środków utleniających do odbarwiania drewna lipowego i topolowego w pierwszym etapie wytwarzania przezroczystego drewna. Przygotowano serie próbek drewna lipowego i topolowego i poddano je obróbce utleniającej w celu odbarwienia drewna w całej objętości. Jako reagenty zastosowano roztwór chlorynu sodu w środowisku rozcieńczonego kwasu octowego oraz alkaliczny roztwór nadtlenku wodoru, po czym próbki poddawano intensywnemu płukaniu w wodzie i suszeniu. Zbadano wpływ warunków delignifikacji drewna, takich jak czas obróbki i zastosowany odczynnik. Mierzono zmiany masy i wymiarów próbek, i obliczono zmiany gęstości. Zmiany koloru mierzono za pomocą kolorymetru w przestrzeni kolorów CIE Lab. W przypadku drewna lipy zaobserwowano pęcznienie próbek na pierwszym etapie, wraz z utratą masy, co prowadziło do zmniejszenia gęstości o 10% po 20 godzinach obróbki. W przypadku drewna topolowego stwierdzono kurczenie się próbek, ale z powodu znacznej utraty masy gęstość końcowa była zbliżona do drewna lipowego. Zmiany koloru korelowały głównie z parametrem jasności próbek. Istotne różnice barwy stwierdzono nawet po najkrótszym czasie obróbki.

Opis:: The chemical composition of poplar wood in relation to the species and age of trees. The contents of the following substances: mineral substances, extractives, cellulose, lignin, holocellulose, in wood from fastgrowing poplar species (Populus deltoides x maximowiczii and Populus trichocarpa Torr and A.Gray) aged 2.5, 3, 5 and 7 years were compared to the contents of the abovementioned substances in Populus nigra L. and Populus alba L. wood, aged about 30. According to other publications, the cellulose and lignin contents increase in parallel with the tree's age. On the other hand, the comparison of cellulose content in poplar wood showed that its content did not depend from the species of tree, age and growth environment. Whereas, the content of extractives in poplar wood was dependent from the species of tree, age and growth environment. The lignin content increased slightly as a tree age, but its content in 7-year-old wood was already similar to the level to be found in the wood at the age of about 30 years. About 30-year-old wood of P. nigra and P. alba contained less holocellulose as compared to its contents in P. deltoides x maximowiczii and P. trichocarpa wood, regardless of its age.
Skład chemiczny drewna topoli w zależności od gatunku i wieku drzewa. Porównano zawartość substancji mineralnych, ekstrakcyjnych, celulozy, ligniny, hemiceluloz w 2,5-letnim, 3-letnim, 5-letnim, 7-letnim drewnie szybko-rosnących gatunków topoli (Populus deltoides x maximowiczii i Populus trichocarpa Torr and A.Gray) z zawartością tych substancji w drewnie około 30-letnim topoli czarnej (Populus nigra L.) i topoli białej (Populus alba L.). Z danych literaturowych wynika, że wraz ze wzrostem wieku drzewa zwiększa się w nim zawartość celulozy i ligniny. Natomiast z porównania danych zawartości celulozy w drewnie topoli otrzymanych w tej pracy, okazało się, że zawartość celulozy nie zależała od gatunku, wieku i środowiska wzrostu drzewa. Z kolei zawartość substancji ekstrakcyjnych w drewnie topoli była zależna od gatunku, wieku i środowiska wzrostu drzewa. Zawartość ligniny nieznacznie zwiększała się w drewnie topól wraz z ich wiekiem, ale już w drewnie 7-letnim jej zawartość była zbliżona do zawartości w drewnie około 30- letnim. Drewno około 30-letnie topoli czarnej i białej charakteryzowało się mniejszą zawartością holocelulozy w odniesieniu do jej zawartości w drewnie P. deltoides x maximowiczii i P. trichocarpa, niezależnie od ich wieku.

Opis:: Changes in poplar (Populus trichocarpa) wood porous structure after liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of applying different hydrothermal pretreatment conditions on the porous structure of poplar wood. Porosity is recognised as an important factor considering efficiency of an enzymatic hydrolysis as a step of bioethanol production. Native poplar wood as well as solid fractions after pretreatment performed at different temperatures (160 °C, 175 °C and 190 °C) were analysed. Porous structure was examined with an inverse size-exclusion chromatography (ISEC) method. Results indicated a significant development of the porous structure of the biomass with increasing porosity along with the growing temperature of the LHW process. The temperature of 190 °C was chosen as the most promising condition of poplar wood LHW pretreatment in terms of the efficiency of the subsequent steps of bioethanol production. The obtained results were consistent with the previous experimental data procured during analysis of the LHW pretreated poplar wood and its subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis yield.
Zmiany w strukturze porowatej drewna topoli po obróbce gorącą wodą (LHW). Celem badań było zbadanie wpływu zastosowania różnych warunków hydrotermalnej obróbki wstępnej na porowatą strukturę drewna topolowego. Porowatość jest uznawana za ważny czynnik, biorąc pod uwagę efektywność hydrolizy enzymatycznej, jako etapu produkcji bioetanolu. W pracy przedstawiono analizę porowatości biomasy po procesie obróbki wstępnej gorącą wodą przeprowadzonym w różnych temperaturach (160 °C, 175 °C i 190 °C). W celu zbadania struktury porowatej materiału zastosowano odwrotną chromatografię wykluczenia przestrzennego (ISEC). W efekcie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono znaczące zwiększanie się porowatości materiału wraz z rosnącą temperaturą obróbki LHW oraz określono 190 °C, jako optymalną temperaturę obróbki wstępnej LHW drewna topoli. Uzyskane wyniki znajdują potwierdzenie we wcześniej prowadzonych badaniach dotyczących hydrolizy enzymatycznej drewna topoli poddanej obróbce wstępnej LHW.

Opis:: The measurements and the observations of tulip tree in Pomerania region were conducted in years 2000 and 2004. The height of the trees was measured with the use of Suunto height gauge, and the trunk perimeter with the aid of tape measure in the height of 130 cm of the trunk length measured from the soil level. The general appearance, condition and wholesomeness of yellow-poplar trees, blossom and the presence of self-sown plants were observed. 37 tulip trees, in these 35 yellow-poplar trees, 2 Chinese tulip trees and one individual of yellow-poplar tree of variety – ‘Aureomarginatum’ were inventoried. The blossom and seed setting was observed on 29 trees and 2 of them produced self-sown plants. The highest yellow-poplar tree was measured in Przemysław. The tree reached the height of 44.5 m. The largest trunk perimeter – 367 cm, possessed the individual of yellow-poplar tree in Barzkowice. The legal protection in the form of recognizing the trees as tree natural monuments should be given to minimum of 13 of inventoried yellow-poplar trees. Old individuals of yellow-poplar trees growing in parks of Pomerania show full acclimatization. That fact is proved by the dimensions they reach and undergoing by them all stages of their development cycle.
