Opis:
The article indicates the features of space ascribed to the literary protagonists who can be regarded as outsiders. Three types of figures of an “outsider out of necessity” have been selected: a rogue/scoundrel, a homosexual and a chav. For each of these figures—and they are characteristic for the Polish latest prose—distinctive dominant space is attributed, which defines, in different ways, and simultaneously brings out the limiting one-dimensionality and, tragic in its expression, the seclusion associated with the condition of “outsiders out of necessity”. With reference to a rogue/scoundrel especially important is flattening (certain “one-dimensionality”) of the disintegrating landscape. In the case of homosexuals there dominates a closed space of one’s own house (flat). For chavs, in turn, characteristic are labyrinth-like districts of urban ghettos.

The subject of this article is an analysis of the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) by James Joyce from a perspective of artistic space. The presented work depicts the inner and outer space of the hero’s home and house, considering the effect of the most important events of his life. It attempts to portray the changes in the relationship between the protagonist and the components of his home and house: the building, the roots, the family, to make clear why in the end he remains homeless and alone.

Aim. The aim of the research is to compare Konstantin Levin’s function in the film Anna Karenina(2012) by Joe Wright, the script written by Tom Stoppard and the novel Anna Kareninaby Leo Tolstoy and to determine how much his figure was changed in the film adaptation under the influence of the scriptwriter’s and director’s stance. Methods. The subjects of the study were the film Anna Karenina (2012) by Joe Wright, the script written by Tom Stoppard and the novel Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. They are analysed with the use of the theory of script writing, different types of character classifications and the text corpus analysis, taking into account the cultural, historical and economic features of scriptwriting and film production. Results. The analysis shows that Konstantin Levin’s function of the second protagonist that is characteristic for the novel is further developed in the screenplay but is omitted in the film. The discrepancies with the source book and the screenplay are caused by the influence of the film director during the film production. Conclusions. Even though the study considers the texts that are closely interrelated, the individual author’s stance influences the text of the screenplay so much that it gives us an opportunity to call Tom Stoppard, the scriptwriter, a writer in the full sense of the word.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the specific character of time and space in Aleksei Remizov’s Along the Cornices, which was written in exile and belonged to the writer’s less known works of art. The analysis starts by comparing this work to the best known Remizov’s novel Whirlwind Russia, which was created approximately at the same time. These works of art basically differ in immanents of the presented world, however, the choice of artistic devices, especially the way of presenting time and space, is essentially similar. The author of the article pays attention to the most important features of the protagonist – his attitude towards the surroundings and attempts of self-defining in view of emigration reality. Although time and place of the action were approximately outlined in the book, for the protagonist the external world is mainly the place of exile and as such does not have much significance. Thus, in spite of essential awareness of time and space, the individual separates itself from this unwanted reality and transfers into the alternative world, the world of fantasy and unrestricted creation, which was called “the world of a book” here.

Opis:
The article discusses Jacques Offenbach’s operetta Robinson Crusoe, whose libretto is based on the great 1719 novel by Daniel Defoe by the same title. The adaptation by French librettists in the late 19th century is a far cry from the original narrative. The novel, an epic hymn to human resourcefulness and resilience, became a light comedy with a trite story line and without a deeper message. The analysis of two formally very different texts with the same protagonist brings about a conclusion of an innate impossibility of translating a grand novel to a comedy stage.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to demonstrate that the male protagonist of the second story of Marie NDiaye’s Three Strong Women (Trois femmes puissantes) can be viewed as a fantastic character. The protagonist’s hesitation in the face of unsettling phenomena – both the external world and the traumatic events from his past – constitutes the central pivot of his construction. The fantastic characteristics of Rudy Descas, whose voice is predominant in the text, reveal the multidimensionality of the supernatural in NDiaye’s work, as the boundaries between the notion of the “character” and the “phenomenon” are not clearly defined. The analysis is based on literary theories concerning the nineteenth century fantastic, the new fantastic and the African fantastic.

Opis:
This article is about the dyadic narration (second-person narration) used in Viktor Pelevin’s short story The Ontology of Childhood. Since this type of narration is not widely known among Polish researchers, narratologists, and literary scholars, the article begins with a presentation of the state of research in Poland. The basic features of this kind of narration and the differences between it and the typical types of speech in first-person and third-person narration are discussed. The short story The Ontology of Childhood by Viktor Pelevin is constructed using a second-person narration, which is the realisation of the author’s strategy being about building a relationship with the reader. Through the second-person narration, the reader is invited (drawn in) to the world presented in the work and is urged to identify with the narrator-main character. Eliminating the boundary between the protagonist and the reader allows the work to generalise experiences and emotions, which – at first individual – by the end of the work gain a universal dimension.

This paper analyses the problem of ambiguity of the main character in Danie Defoe’s novel and the problem of the target reader’s ambiguity. The graphic version of Defoe’s novel, created by Alberto Morales Ajubel (2008) unveils this problem. It is also an interpretative challenge, which may be used in various ways in the school environment. The paper introduces some of these methods. Complicated relations between word and picture, which are introduced by graphic novels of such kind, are an important didactic aspect of Polish Language Education.

Opis:
Humour in Pan Podstoli has not attracted much attention so far. Although it is not the most important element of this novel we can observe some interesting solutions in its functioning. Comical events result both from the actions of the narrator – who is one of the protagonists of the novel – and of Pan Podstoli himself. The most important comical elements in the novel are: anecdotes, jokes (also puns), comical scenes, comical characters, humorous observations. Generally, all these kinds of humour are used in the satirical function or in order to make the narration livelier. Irony deserves special attention. It comes from the main protagonist and results from his involvement in the problems that are talked about.
