Opis:
Aim. The aim of this article is to contribute towards a wider analysis of remote qualitative interviews taking into consideration the context of qualitative research as a social practice, which is often overlooked in the body of literature. Methods. The study is based on twelve in-depth interviews with qualitative researchers conducted by the author. The data is analysed with the focus on social aspects of qualitative interviews which engage the interviewee and the interviewer alike. Results and conclusion. The analysis shows that, from the perspective of the researcher, the social aspects of qualitative interviews constitute an important part of the research method. The interview is a meeting that combines methodological features with the attitude of involved people. Researchers are accustomed to in-person interviews and from that perspective, they evaluate possible losses caused by remote research. However, as they self-reflect, this is not always an inherent feature of the new media but rather a question of how they are used and by whom. The interview is a meeting that utilises communication habits and experiences from both sides of the conversation – the interviewer and the interviewee. It is important to take this fact into consideration while analysing the potential of remote interviews, especially when social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is changing our communication habits. Cognitive value. The remote qualitative interviews are often described from the perspective of usability and effectiveness. This article describes researchers as a part of the research process who have their own attitudes and experiences in conducting research. From the perspective of social practices, these are almost as important as the knowledge and attitude of interviewees and they also affect the results of the research process.

Opis:
Even though survey studies recurrently show that Poles want to have children and that parenthood is important to them, more and more Polish women remain childless. This discrepancy calls for a closer consideration. We need to understand a nature of childbearing desires and intentions much better and investigate obstacles which might prevent women from fulfilling them. In this paper, I analyse 20 in-depth semi-structured interviews with childless women aged 37–46. The qualitative methodology is applied to explore what preferences, circumstances and life-choices of the respondents have led them to childlessness. The respondents discussed several factors: A lack of a partner, fecundity problems, postponement of childbearing related to employment or life priorities other than family and childbearing. However, the results show that it is rarely possible to find a single reason for remaining childless, as various factors collide and interact in women’s lives.

This article presents original research concerning subjective security and the perception of security threats in Lithuania. It is based on an analysis of data collected during qualitative interviews conducted in 2016 within the framework of a project titled Subjective Security in Volatile Geopolitical Context: Traits, Factors, and Individual Strategies. The investigation resides upon individual-based human security theory, and it addresses the threats that individuals consider to be important, as well as the ways in which various perceptions of security form within society.

Opis:
This is a book review of the volume edited by Roberta Piazza and Alessandra Fasulo, and entitled Marked Identities. Narrative Lives Between Social Labels and Individual Biographies, Palgrave Macmillan, London-New York, 2015. The book consists of various interviews with individuals whose lives, mainly because of the group to which they belong, could be viewed as ‘marked’. The difference between the idea of ‘stigma’ and the notion ‘marked identity’ is underlined, together with the idea of ‘diversity’, which today is not necessarily something that one should hide but, quite the opposite, something one can be proud of. One of the main ideas of this text is that identity is not a rigid reality but a process, by which individuals negotiate the version of who they are with others.

Opis:
This paper suggests how translation processes can be integrated in qualitative interviews in multi-lingual research fields. While theoretical and methodological problems of language and translation have been thoroughly reflected upon from different perspectives in qualitative research, the literature provides little guidance for the practical gathering and handling of multi-lingual material. As a contribution to filling this gap, the paper suggests a systematic, comparative combination of oral and written translations of interviews, which would serve both a diagnostic and a heuristic function. Based on an ethnographic study in Zambian refugee camps and conceptual distinctions between schemes of translation, I identify, in oral translations, five forms of translator’s decision to depart from the literal wording in favor of a pragmatic translation intended to aid continuation of the conversation. As an important element of the suggested procedure, the comparison of the translation modes is systematically discussed with the translating research assistant, leading not only to reflection on further translation practices, but, most importantly, to an awareness of important substantial aspects of the material. This heuristic function of the comparative combination of translation modes thus leads to an enhancement of the research process.

Opis:
This article provides insights into employment decisions of mothers and mothers-to-be in a post-socialist Poland around the entry to the EU. Previous studies for this country continuously pointed to a strong determination among mothers to be employed during the economic transformation, despite increasing obstacles to combining paid work with childrearing over the 1990s. We analyse in-depth interviews to explore women's motives to work for pay. We investigate how these motives are related to women's childbearing experiences and intentions. Our analyses show that motherhood was central in women's lives at this point in Polish history, but females sought to combine it with employment. We also find that women's perceptions about their ability to balance work and motherhood were strongly related to the meanings that they attached to paid work.

Opis:
In research on family relations (between mothers and daughters, intimate partners etc.) various research methods are used (individual interviews with family members, dyads, focused group interviews, ethnographic observation) in order to learn the variety of perspectives and experiences of family members. Such an approach enables a researcher to analyze the problem in a more multidimensional way in comparison with a situation when the research is conducted only with one of the family members. However, engaging more research participants, who are often tied to each other with complicated emotional bonds, creates various ethical and methodological challenges. Considering this issue, I refer to my experience in conducting research on the dynamics and forms of adult siblings’ relations through their life course. I conducted interviews with 41 women and 14 men (in 7 cases more than one sibling from a family took part in my research). In the rest of the cases my interviewees rejected the possibility of my contacting their siblings. In this article I discuss issues concerning the recruitment of research participants belonging to the same family, managing data confidentiality when individuals who know each other are interviewed, and the dynamics of power relations between the researcher and the research participants.
W badaniu uczestniczyło 55 osób (41 kobiet i 14 mężczyzn).

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to explore the potential and usefulness of qualitative research in studying accountants’ behaviors, specifically utilizing individual semistructured interviews and focus group interviews. The paper also indicates challenges to overcome when conducting research using those research techniques. Methodology/approach: The article is based on an analysis of the literature on qualitative research in behavioral accounting, but also on the authors’ experiences of conducting qualitative interviews with members of this professional group. Findings: The advantages of qualitative interviews are pointed out, including an opportunity to observe respondents’ reactions and obtain information related to their attitudes, motivations and needs. Potential challenges were identified relating to interviewing accountants, including those that arise from the researcher’s skills or participant selection process. The proposed areas where interviews could be particularly useful include professional judgments of accountants, their ethical dilemmas, the application of new technologies, or the impact of accounting systems on organizations. Practical implications: The paper encourages researchers to explore accounting behaviors through qualitative interviews (direct implications), especially in the areas mentioned. It inspires them to seek other research topics using these techniques, which, in the long run, may help improve accountants’ qualifications and shape the identity of this professional group (further implications).

Opis:
The article shows specificity of qualitative research using interview techniques in an analysis of professional careers of women in Poland. It focuses in particular on the individual indepth interview and narrative interview, their similarities as well as their drawbacks and ways of applying them in analyses of women’s functioning in their professional lives. The article presents specific studies in which these techniques have been applied and shows when and to what extent they contributed to obtaining interesting results. Other issues raised in the article involve: deliberate resignation from anonymity while using these techniques and including gender sensitivity in a result analysis. As for the traps related to analysis of data obtained using these two types of interviews, specific focus was put on the time of conducting such interviews, which results in subjectivity of the analyzed research material.

Opis:
Many PhD students begin as unconscious Naturalists or Emotionalists using interview studies to report people’s “experience” of an unquestioned social “problem.” An analysis of articles in one journal shows that this naïve use of interview data has become the common currency of qualitative research. In a critique of one such article, I show how interview studies may simply reproduce interviewees’ own accounts, glossed over by a few social science categories. By “mining” interviews for apposite extracts, such researchers lose sight of how sequence is consequential for what we say and do. Much more needs to be done if qualitative research is not to be just a set of techniques but an analytic project, different from journalism.
