Penicillium spp. are well known to produce a variety of beneficial metabolites for plant growth and survival, as well as defend their hosts from attack of certain pathogens. In this study, effects of culture filtrate of different Penicillium spp. were tested on tomato seeds. On the whole, presoaking of seeds in filtrates of the nine Penicillium isolates tested, significantly increased seed germination when compared with the control seeds. Cultural extracts of P. expensum and P. billi were highly effective in growth promotion up to 90%. It was also observed that P. implicatum and P. oxlalicam significantly enhanced the root growth in tomato seedling as compare to other species. In case of shoot length, P. verrucosum (3.38), P. granulatum (2.81) and P. implicatum (2.62) were effective. However P. implicatum was quite promising to increase shoot and root length in tomato seedlings. Where as P. simplicissimium and P. citrinum were leas effective on seedling growth. The plant growth promoting ability of Penicillium strains may help in growth permotion in other plants and crops. Penicillium spp. are already known for producing mycotoxin and enzymes. Plant growth promoting ability of Penicillium spp will open new aspects of research and investigations. The role of Penicillium spp. in tomato plant growth requires further exploration.

In the present investigation the seeds of Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp) were treated with different doses of gamma radiation (05KR, 10KR, 15KR, 20KR, 25KR, 30KR, 35KR, 40KR, 45KR, and 50KR) and concentration of Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (05mM, 10mM, 15mM, 20mM, 25mM, 30mM, 35mM, 40mM, 45mM, and 50mM) for studying seed germination, seedling height, (shoot and root), seedling injury, seedling vigour index, and seedling survival of plants at 30th day. The seed germination percentage was decreased with increased in the concentration/doses when compared to control. The LD50 (Lethal dose) value was determined based upon the seed germination percentage. The 50 percentage of seed germination and reduction was observed in 20KR of gamma rays and 25mM of EMS and it is considered as LD50 value for both the treatments. The decrease in seed germination was more prominent with gamma rays than that of EMS treatments. The seedling parameters of gamma rays and EMS treated seedlings were progressively decreased with increase dose/concentration in all mutagenic treatments when compared to control. The maximum seedling parameters were observed in 05KR of gamma rays and 05mM of EMS. Minimum seedling parameters were observed in 50mM of EMS and 50KR of gamma rays respectively.

Wheat and maize are the main staple food crops that contribute to human food security. Their growth, however, is reduced under stresses such as salinity. The plant microbiome is associated with each plant tissue and develops a holobiont in association with the plant. Plants actively manage the configuration of their related bacterial population and its function. These microorganisms provide a broad range of benefits and advantages to the plants. The present study aimed to examine the growth improvement of wheat var. HD 2687 and maize var. PSCL-4642 under salinity at the seedling stage following inoculation of salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) BoGl120 purified from Bougainvillea glabra. The seed germination potential with/without bacterial inoculation was examined at 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM NaCl concentrations for both crops. Compared to controls, at 50 mM NaCl concentration, the BoGl120 isolate provided the maximum radicle length in maize (32 mm) and in wheat (24.8 mm). At 100 mM NaCl concentration, however, the radicle length of wheat and maize seedlings was decreased. Inoculation of plants with the BoGl120 isolate enhanced the plumule length of seedlings at different NaCl concentrations as compared to controls. In comparison with controls, BoGl120 improved the plumule length of wheat to 32.6, 14.0, and 8 mm at 50, 100, and 150 mM NaCl concentrations, respectively. The results of the present study support the concept that PGPRs could help to increase the tolerance against saline stress in wheat and maize at the seedling stage.

Improvement of Parkia seedling growth on plant height (PH) using seed dormancy breaking technologies in different soil media was investigated at nursery unit of Department for Forestry and Wildlife Management, Federal University Dutsin-Ma. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replicates was the design used. The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) while the means were separated using Fishers’ Least Significant Difference (F-LSD; P≤ 0.05). Emergence of seeds was observed to commence four days after sowing (DAS) in mechanically scarified seeds (MS). The top soil added with mycorrhiza at 120 g (M120+) had significantly higher value (24.01) on PH at 10 weeks after sowing (WAS) in the main effect. In the interactive effect, seeds soaked in 98 % concentrated tetraoxosulphate (V1) (H2SO4) for 2 and 4 minutes (A2 and A4) and sowed in sterilized top soil (SS) and non-sterilized (NS) had significantly higher values (16.70 and 16.25) and (27.60 and 28.25) on PH at 4 and 12 WAS respectively. Seeds soaked in H2SO4 for 6 minutes (A6) and sowed in M120+ had higher value (15.60) on PH at 4 WAS. MS in M60+, hot water (HW) at 80 ºC and 100 ºC for 10 and 5 minutes had higher effect (16.52 and 16.48) on PH at 4 WAS. MS in HW at 60 ºC for 15 minutes and HW 80 ºC in M60+ was significant on PH (26.80, 27.85 and 29.00) at 12 WAS. HW 60 ºC in SS had higher effect (15.95) on PH at 4 WAS. In conclusion, mechanically scarified seeds, seeds soaked in H2SO4 acid for 2-6 minutes and in hot water between 60 ºC to 100 ºC for at most 15 minutes break Parkia dormancy and grow rapidly in ectomycorrhiza soil.

Mechanical site preparation (MSP) is commonly used to enable forest regeneration of clear-cuts. Less intense methods may be more suitable from an environmental point of view, but such a method can result in the lack of natural regeneration. We compare the influence of three MSP methods on natural regeneration of Scots pine. The methods differ in their degree of soil disturbance. The effects of MSP by forest plough (FP), active plough (AP), and forest cutter (FC) on density, quality, and biometric parameters of one-year old seedlings were determined. The highest density of seedlings was obtained in the FP treatment (188,000 seedlings ha–1). The seedling density was significantly lower in the AP method (121,000 seedlings ha–1), and in the FC variant (36,000 seedlings ha–1). The best quality seedlings were found in the FC variant, and the worst – in the FP treatment. Most biometric parameters of seedlings did not differ by MSP method, except for the root length and root:shoot ratio. By the end of growing season, in the FP treatment, 1-year old seedlings formed a top bud more than twice as often as the seedlings from the AP and FC treatments. The FP method led to the best Scots pine natural regeneration. The results obtained in the FC variant were not as good as in the FP method, though they were still acceptable from the silvicultural point of view. The FC method was the least intensive method of site preparation, yet it is considered the most appropriate from the environmental (soil protection) point of view.

To compare the effect of NaCl, CaCl2 and their combinations on germination and early seedling growth stages of Lycopersicum esculentum L., were studied under pot experiments 2008. Results indicated that significant increases were recorded in percentage of germination, seedling fresh and dry weights, seedling length, water content, catalase activity and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophylls as well as carotenoids) under the low level concentration (20 mM) of NaCl or CaCl and their combination (1:1). On other hand increasing salt concentration in nutrient solution caused significant decrease in all of these parameters. The great reduction occurred under high salinity level of NaCl (50 mM). Meanwhile, peroxidase activity increased significantly with increasing salinity levels from 20 mM to 50 mM of both applied salinity types. Besides, peroxidase activity under NaCl salinity showed a marked increase followed by NaCl + CaCl2 (1:1) and CaCl2 at 50 mM.
