Opis:
In a dynamic machining process, distortion in surface irregularity is a very complex phenomenon. Surface irregularities form a periodic representation of the tool profile with various kinds of disturbance in a broad range of changes in the height and length of the profile. To discern these irregularity disturbances, interactions of the tool in the form of changes perpendicular and parallel relative to the workpiece were analyzed and simulated. The individual kinds of displacement of the tool relative to the workpiece introduce distortions in the changes of height and length. These changes are weakly represented in standard height and length irregularity parameters and their discernment has been found through amplitude-frequency functions.

Opis:
Flap peening (FP) is a cold working technique used to apply a compressive force using small shots, this will lead to enhance the surface properties that it can sustain for long life during working conditions. In this study, several aircraft aluminum alloys materials namely; 2219 T6, 2024 T6, 7075 T6, and 6061 T6 were flap peened under different rotational speeds. The effect of rotational speed on the average surface roughness (Ra) and average surface micro hardness have been investigated. As seen by the Scanning Electron Microscope SEM phots that the hardness of peened layer is increased. It was found that as the flap peening speeds increase the percent change in surface roughness (Ra) increases, and the percent change in surface micro hardness decreases. The maximum increase in Ra occurs in 2219 T80 and the minimum in 6061 T6 alloys, and for hardness, it is reported that the maximum occurs in 6061 T6 and the minimum in 2019 T80 alloy.

Opis:
We present a prototype of a simple, low-cost setup for a fast scatterometric surface texture measurements. We used a total integrated scatter method (TIS) with a semiconductor laser (λ = 638 nm) and a Si photodiode. Using our setup, we estimated the roughness parameters Rq for two reference surfaces (Al mirrors with flatness λ/10) and seven equal steel plates to compare. The setup is easily adaptable for a fast, preliminary manufacturing quality control. We show is possible to construct a low-cost measurement system with nanometric precision.

Opis:
This paper presents a comprehensive methodology for measuring and characterizing the surface topographies on machined steel parts produced by precision machining operations. The performed case studies concern a wide spectrum of topographic features of surfaces with different geometrical structures but the same values of the arithmetic mean height Sa. The tested machining operations included hard turning operations performed with CBN tools, grinding operations with Al2O3 ceramic and CBN wheels and superfinish using ceramic stones. As a result, several characteristic surface textures with the Sa roughness parameter value of about 0.2 μm were thoroughly characterized and compared regarding their potential functional capabilities. Apart from the standard 2D and 3D roughness parameters, the fractal, motif and frequency parameters were taken in the consideration.

Opis:
Combining surface measurement data from individual measurements of surface fragments is an issue that has been recognized for flat surfaces. The connection takes place on the principle of making ‘overlap’ measurements according to a specific measurement strategy, and then the algorithm synthesizes the measurement data for the common part (data fusion). This paper presents a method of combining partial data into one larger set using image processing methods. The purpose of the analysis is to combine surface data of a more complex shape in terms of surface roughness and waviness. A successful attempt was made to combine surface measurement data located on a cylindrical surface - convex surface. A rotated table was designed and used for surface data acquisition. The datasets were acquired with the use of CCI 6000 (366μm - 366μm) with the assumed overlapping of at least 20%. The measurement datasets were first pre-processed: filling in non-measured points, levelling and form removing were applied. For such processed datasets, the common part was identified (data registration) and then the data fusion was performed. An example of stitching the surface datasets shows usefulness of the presented methodology.

This paper compares the ability of grinding processes to enhance functional properties of the surface textures produced. The main objective of such a comparison is to facilitate the decision about precision grinding operations. The experimental study performed includes two grinding operations using electro-corundum Al2O3 and CBN wheels. For this purpose, the topographic features of ground surfaces with the Sa roughness parameter of about 0.2?m were compared. Apart from the set of 3D roughness parameters, the frequency, fractal, wavelet and motif characteristics were analyzed.

Opis:
The quality of the machined surface is one of the most important criteria when products are processed. For different materials, there are differentially fitting processing technologies and cutting modes to ensure that the parts have surface roughness in the allowed value range. In this paper, the research on surface roughness of machining tropical wood by milling method is presented. It is necessary to establish and solve the optimal problems with such aims as the highest surface quality, minimum cutting power and the highest productivity in the optimal cutting mode. Using a great amount of experimental planning and many constrained nonlinear optimization problem solving methods, the authors built a process and solved the problem to determine the optimal cutting parameters such as feed per tooth Sz, tool tip radius ρ, depth of cut h, etc. that satisfy the above object. Research object is tropical wood chukrasia and this is the database to design woodworking machines by milling method and choose a reasonable working mode when processing on CNC machines.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of mechanical and ultrasound-assisted stirring methods for varnish systems on the varnish layer’s surface hardness and surface scratch resistance. The study focused on polyurethane, acrylic, and polyester varnish systems, which were applied to three distinct wood types: Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Turkish beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky), and African mahogany (Khaya ivorensis A. Chev.). The mixing processes included mechanical stirring for 3 and 5 minutes, as well as ultrasound-assisted stirring with differing power levels (80 W and 120 W) for 3 and 5 minutes. The highest surface hardness (175.10) was achieved using polyester varnish obtained by mechanical stirring for 3 minutes and applied to Turkish beech, while the lowest surface hardness (66.80) was observed for acrylic varnish obtained by 120 W ultrasound-assisted stirring for 5 minutes and applied to African mahogany. The highest surface scratch resistance (0.760 N) was observed with polyester varnish obtained by mechanical stirring for 5 minutes and applied to Scots pine, and also with acrylic varnish obtained by 80 W ultrasound-assisted stirring for 3 minutes and applied to Turkish beech. Overall, the findings suggested that the ultrasound-assisted mixing method generally fell short in terms of enhancing the varnish properties compared with the mechanical mixing technique.

Opis:
3-D seismic refl ection methods have been established as the predominant seismic method for hydrocarbon exploration. While this is true for exploration scale surveys the same is not yet true for near-surface seismic refl ection investigations. While the benefi ts of employing 3-D methods have been documented they are yet to be fully adopted by the near-surface community. There are a number of reasons for this; primary among them is the labor involved with planting and re-cabling large numbers of geophones. The amount of time and labor involved in these operations has been a direct hindrance for 3-D investigations of the near-surface. To help overcome these limitations The University of Kansas geophysics group has developed a portable, automated seismic data acquisition system, known as the autojuggie. The autojuggie allows for effi cient ultra-shallow seismic imaging and is capable of quickly performing non-invasive, high-resolution 2-D or 3-D seismic surveys by deploying a dense array of geophones.
