Opis:
Transport is generally an instrument for globalization. It is not possible to use transport as an instrument for de-globalization. For compensating the negative effects of globalization on regional and local markets, a world-wide sustainable development process is to be started. This is an idea propagated by United Nations since the publishing of the Brundtland-Report. Sustainability has three components: the social, the ecological and the economic sustainability. Economic sustainability is realized when the (transport) enterprises make no profits and setting the prices is following a price-wage-rule. This rule postulates that the price and wage have to be equal. However, transport can also set incentives for social and ecological sustainability. Transport is no instrument for de-globalization, but an important instrument for compensating the negative effects of globalization. The measures which transport policy has to realize sustainability are not new, but we need to a new world-wide concept for transport policy. We have to accept, that the world is one economic area and not more than two hundred areas. We need only one set of economic rules and not over hundred different sets of rules.

Opis:
The main aim of the article was to contribute to the understanding of the current panorama of sustainable development in Portugal, while pointing out possible directions for future research and the improvement of sustainability strategies in the country. The article uses descriptive methods. The main sources of information were the literature on the subject, closely related to the development of sustainable development and economic aspects in Portugal. The analysis shows that the standard of living of the Portuguese has improved. An increase in investment in education was also noted. In terms of social development, a decrease in the number of births was observed in the years 2010-2020, which proves the aging of society.

Opis:
Companies are increasingly implementing sustainable solutions as they face a growing sustainability demands from different stakeholders. The question is whether car manufacturers adhered to sustainable production principles and at what level they are doing it in practice. The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (LCSP) is used as a model to analyse the main aspects of sustainable production and assess the companies in the automotive sector in European Union. The data was collected from the Corporate Social Responsibility/ Sustainability reports of the individual car manufacturers found in the online data base of Global Reporting Initiative. Empirical evidence shows the adherence of these companies to the LCSP sustainable production principles. All the studied companies seem to be conscious of the significance of sustainability for the automotive industry. Although most of the sustainable production practices are focused on the environmental dimension of sustainability, employee and social aspects are not ignored in the reports.

Opis:
Aim: This paper aims at reviewing existing theoretical frameworks in sustainability competencies and identifying suitable evaluation strategies and instruments. Design / Research methods: To gain a comprehensive view of the evaluation and assessment processes of sustainability competencies a systematic literature review was conducted using a set of keywords. After a refining phase and selection of articles centred in evaluation processes a final sample of 43 articles was analysed.   Conclusions / findings: Little evidence exists on the development, outcomes and impact that courses introducing students to sustainability competencies have. Further empirical research is needed on the development and implementation of assessment tools for sustainability competencies. Originality / value of the article: this paper outlines the state of the art of evaluation and assessment tools for sustainability competencies in higher education and suggests pathways for further research and practice based on a literature review.

Aim: Provide a summary of the discussion of focus group 2 at the workshop on “Methodology for assessing the campus sustainability from the perspective of multi-level antifragility” held in June 2016 at Siauliai University (Lithuania), as well as reflection notes each of the participant wrote after the workshop. The paper shows the outcome of the process of interaction and reflections of the authors.   Design / Research methods: This article contains feedback based on the experience and ideas from third year students from sustainable business from the University of Siauliai (Lithuania). Discussion took place during the workshop in focus groups. Afterwards, a discussion took place among all participating students and lecturers. After the workshop, the authors wrote individual feedback notes. These are summarized in this paper.   Conclusions / findings: When using a wider set of indicators of campus sustainability showing different types of fragilities, different stakeholders need to be used as a source of information. The reason is that when not possessing information on a certain aspect, as was confirmed by this focus group, an indicator tends to be considered irrelevant. A conclusion that should be treated with care is that indicators of lying and cheating, honesty, as well as indicators of mistakes may be a good starting point for creating indicators of campus sustainability focusing at threats for organizational viability and sustainability of the university’s external environment.   Originality / value of the article: The article provides critical feedback on an innovative approach towards research on campus sustainability.

Many indicators on which no information was available were considered to be irrelevant, being an example of the principle “what we do not see, does not count.”   Originality / value of the article: The article provides critical feedback on an innovative approach towards research on campus sustainability.

The author reflects from the background of his experience in Turkey.   Design / Research methods: The author provides his own reflections and opinions, based on the discussions at the workshop.   Conclusions / findings: It is very difficult to create a set of indicators making campus sustainability internationally comparable, as well as finding proper sources of information. A starting point in creating such indicators may be mistakes threatening organizational viability and external sustainability   Originality / value of the article: The article provides critical feedback on an innovative approach towards research on campus sustainability.

Opis:
Niniejsza praca przedstawia propozycję empirycznej definicji zrównoważonego rozwoju stosowanej w celu szczegółowej konceptualizacji i operacjonalizacji współczynnika umożliwiającego porównanie różnych syste-mów politycznych. Modele/różnice w zakresie poziomów wskaźnika zrównoważonego rozwoju wśród różnych krajów określone na podstawie próby obejmującej 132 państw zostały poddane analizie porównawczej na pod-stawie łatwo dostępnych danych wtórnych. Wreszcie struktura fraktalna posłużyła do przeprowadzenia końco-wych obserwacji i omówienia wyników poszczególnych krajów w zakresie oznak zrównoważonego rozwoju w postaci zrównoważenia społecznego, technologicznego i środowiskowego.
The paper propose an empirical definition of sustainable development, which is used for detailed conceptualiza-tion and operationalization into an index for comparing national polities. Patterns/gaps of sustainable develop-ment index performance among national polities using a sample of 132 countries are explored comparatively based on readily available secondary data. Finally, the fractal-based framework is used to make concluding ob-servations and discussions regarding national polities performance on sustainable development as an index of social sustainability, technological sustainability and environmental sustainability indications.

Opis:
This papers aim is to focus on the specifications of the intermodal services in Slovakia (partly also in the Czech Republic and Austria) as representative of Central Europe as well as on the existing and potential clients of intermodal transport through the region of Southeast Europe. The analysed market has enough potential to offer intermodal services. Currently, the competitive situation compared to road transport is very unsatisfactory. Yet, it is hardly possible to realize a good revenue situation with intermodal transports. Nevertheless, the paper identifies three areas in question where potential was analysed by doing literature researches as well as using expert opinions. New intermodal services from the Adriatic port to Slovakia as well as between between Central Europe (Slovakia) and the southern CIS counties, e.g. Russia have been identified. In addition, new intermodal services into the direction of Romania and respectively Turkey show enough potential to establish several strategies to enhance the transport level within the whole corridor. Especially Turkey is characterized as "chance" for the area in question.
